Description

R. HIRSCHFELD VEST CONSTRUCTION Filed Jan 15, 1938 NITED e Rlldoltln fichfelaf f ApnlicMionJ mi ry hasfsgmhm $5,111? f Patented Nov. 15, 1938 V Myspresent invention relates generally to apparel, and has particular reference to an" improved vest construction. 1 '1 :Primarily, therprese'nt improvements are 1 designed to enhancethe appearance and ilt'of a mans full-dress vest; particularly of the" sleeve- 'less varietyybuttit willibeiunderstood that cer- :tainphases of 'my invention are not "necessarily restricted to a vest-of this particular type;- i In a vest of the kind to, which -myinvention i's applicable,v there areal pair of front portions adapted to overlap when the vest is worn. 0m
'of th'e portions is provided with'a series of butbuttons, preferably at a point coincident with the centerof the uppermost'buttonr V r 1 One feature ofrmy -inventionflies infcoupling this trouser-engagingv tab, which is adapted to s exert al central downward pull upon the front .of' the vest; with an anchoring tab secured to the'vest'at the rear center of thenckband' por Another feature- 0f myinvention lies in the particular arrangement I of the trouser en'gagin'g tab with respect to l a" flap carried by and behind the button-carryingportion; to cover the rear parts of "the buttons: "More particularly, "rpro vide a slit in thisflapthroug'h which thefr'e'e 'end' of =thetrouser-eng aging tab may extend. This arrangement, coupled with the novelmeans of securing the trouser-engaging tab, provides a construction of unusual simplicity and efficiency.
I achieve the foregoing objects and such other objects as may hereinafter appear or be pointed out in the manner illustratively exemplified i the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a front elevational view of a vest embodying the features of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary rear view of the button-carrying front portion; 1
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 witha portion of the button-covering'flap broken away; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged cross sectional view 1116' 2. t r I t Il'l the vest I have'chosen'for' illustration, a neckband portion l0 merges' with the front portio'ns' 'l'l and-1'2, the latter being provided with "conventional 'lapels "I 3 and I4, and beingadapt'ed toov'erl'apfas shown'in'Figure-L when the'vejst is wornnAttherea'rlower ends of the portions Ill and I2,'*straps Hand-l6 are secured, being "adapted'to interehgag'e atjtheb'a'ck of the wearer to hold the' vest in position. In theldr'awingithe freeends of the "straps l5 and I6 have'been brokwithfas'eriesfof buttons carriedby thefro'nt portion H, In the 'illiistrated embodimentthese buttons 18' (see Figure 41am f the removable pe a'chifi w c ha a e w r te n shank 19 adaptedto pass'through'the portion 'l2,:the rear end of each shank;having aloop 20 ada ted e a 'v' o' r ceive a v r nra c lng element 2T. 'Io reciye thebuttons l8, the portion i2 is providedwlthaseries of eyelets or I equivalent perforations 22. 1
taken substantially along line 10f? Figenawa'y, since they form no part of the present Carried by'the "front" portion the trouserengag ng tab-2'3, whichinay bej constructed in any suitable manner; preferably ofnelastic tape or the likefand preferably provided with an elongated slit Wfhefithevest is worn, it is intended that this tab gwill be pulled-downwardly to 'engagetheslit 24 over a convenient central button on the trousers of the wearer, thereby exerting a central downward pull upon the front portion of the vest.
In accordance with my invention, the tab 23 is secured to the vest at a point coincident with the center of one of the buttons of the vest.
1 Preferably, the point of securement is coincident with the center of the uppermost button. Where the buttons are of the removable type, as shown, and the portion I2 is therefore provided with eyelets or perforations 22, the tab 23 is secured most button i8, extends also through the tab 23, In this way, the employment of the tab 23 does not in the least interfere" with the convenient insertion, locking, unlocking, or removal, of
5 the buttons l8. 7
Of primary importance is the fact that the downward pull, exerted by the tab 23 when the vest is worn, is focused at exactly the correct point for imparting a smooth, taut and well-fit- 10 ting appearance to the. vest.- It has been i ound in practice, that, where a trouser-engaging tab is secured between the buttons of the vest, or at other 'points, the downward pull that is exerted upon the vest not only fails to impart the desired smoothness to the vest, but frequently impairs the appearance of the vest by producing undesired breaks or transverse wrinkles, as a result of which tabs of this characterhave frequently proven to be more of a nuisance than anything else, and are often not put into use by' the wearerfi 3:
The desirable effects produced by the present trouser,- engaging; tab I are: enhanced: by the corresponding,provisionatthe'rear center of'the'neck- :bandEportion i0 of 'an' anchoring tab 25 (see Figure l). -This,tab ,is preferably provided with a buttonhole126, .andit-isIa'dapted, to beshooked. onto the rear collar button: --Thisstabrrnay be secured position by any convenient :means, jpreferably the neckband portion ,lllgthe ends '21 being avail; able for taking in 2 01 lettingout {theneckband to-t fitqtheivest to the ,size..andshape-of any. par- -ticu1arwearer.: -qThe conjoint use of the anchoring tab 25,-and the trouser-engaging tab 23,;exertsan accurately 'central -longitudinal, tension upon the-vest-to ,holdtheflatter always in smooth well-fitting po- ,sition. 7 r
40 :ll be understoodthat the buttons need not necessarily be-of the removable type shown in he)draw n -t;,--H0wev ith i e l is cu oma i y iused i in connect ionawith ,the gf;ull-. d r ess.-,vests,' to f a'cilitatelaunderingep In order to cover and conbehind the flapt28, In order to make itavailable ;Eor;,engagement with. thetrousers offthe wearer,

1, ,l'lhedetails of assembly, of the, various parts, except asgotherwijse stated herein, are not materialjto, hef present invention. ,However itflmay ,be pointed out that a customaryv and convenient mode of assembly is shown in Figure 4 in which it will be observed that the portion I2 is provided with a lining 30, while the flap 28 is unlined, and is secured at its upper end by means of stitches 3 I.
In general, it will be understood that changes in the details herein described and illustrated for the purpose of explaining the nature-of my invention, may be made by those skilled in the art Without departing from the spirit and scope of the inventionas expressed inth'e appended claims. It is; therefore, intended that these details be interpreted. as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its'use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
