This invention relates to improvements in door controlling devices and has for its object to provide a new and improved device of this description. The invention has as a further object to provide a door controlling device which automatically stops and holds the door in any desired position. The invention has as a further object to provide a door controlling device wherein the movement of the handle for moving the door; renders inoperative the holding device that holds the door in any given position. The invention has as a further object to provide a door controlling device for controlling laterally movmoved except when moved by means of the handle. The invention has as a further object to provide a door controlling device forcars which automatically prevents the movement of the door in either direction, due to movement, change in speed or stopping of the car.- The invention has further objects which are more particularly pointed out in the accompanying description.

Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several figures.
Referring now to the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, there is illustrated a car door I which is adapted to slide laterally back and forth. This door may be mounted in any desired manner. As herein shown there are provided rollers 2 and 3 rotatably mounted in the brackets 4 and 5 attached to the door, which roll upon a rail 6 as the door is moved back and forth. The brackets 4 and 5 are preferably provided with guides l and 8 which move along the rail 6 so as to prevent outward or inward movement of the door at the bottom. At thetop the door is provided with members 9 and In which preferably have parts on opposite sides of the guide I I' so as to hold the topof the door against outward or inward movement but permit it to slide laterally. The door is provided with the ordinary hasp l2, staple l3 and locking pin I4.
Attached to the door, preferably at the bottom, and at a point between the rollers 2 and 3, is an automatic acting holding device for holding the door in any desired position and for preventing it from being moved by the movement of the car, or the variation in the speed ,of the car, or the stopping of the car. In this construction the holding device is provided with two members l5 and l6. s The member I5 is a cam member. and the member l6 isan engaging member for engaging a fixed part on the car. These two members are preferably connected together in some suitable manner so that they act together. In the construction shown in Figs. -1 to 5 inclusive, these members are mounted upon a pin ll which has a vertical movement, but is confined against lateral movement. One end of the pin works in a groove l8 in the stationary member H! attached to the door and the other end of the pin works in a groove in a member 2| attached to the cover' 22, which cover is attached to the door.
The cam member I5 is free to swing with relation to engaging member l6 and is provided with the downwardly projecting corners 23 and 24, which project below theface 25 of the cam member intermediate them. This face 25is preferably curved, but it may be of any desired shape to secure the desired result. The engaging mem ber I6 is provided with a hook 26 which hooks under the flange 21 of the rail 6 and'prevents the bottom of the door from being moved outwardly.
A handle28 projects through a slot 29 in the cover 22. This handle is preferably .U-shaped, the two side members projecting inwardly along the edges of the members I5 and I6, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5. There'is a stop member 30 fastened to the handle so as to prevent its removal and which also acts as a shield for slot 29. The cam member l5 and the rail engaging member l6 are held between the member l9 and the members 2| and 30.
When there is pressure applied to the door which is not applied by the handle, one of the corners 23 or 24, depending upon the direction of the force, engages the rail Band the cam member is thus rocked so as to lift the engaging member l6 and cause'the hook 26 of the engaging member Hi to engage the flange 21 of the rail 6 and hold the door against movement. When it is desired to move the. door, the handle 28 is grasped and moved. This handle engages the cam. member ['5 and moves it until it is parallel to the member 5 Hi, This releases either corner which engages the rail so as to cause the hook 26 to drop and release the flange 21 of the rail 6, thus permitting a free movement of the door.
In the modified construction shown in Figs. 6 and '7 the holding device comprises a cam member 3| and the engaging member 32. The cam member in this case is provided with a slot 33 in which is received the stationary guiding device 34 which is fastened at one end to the casing 35 and at the other end to a member 36 attached to the door. In this construction the guiding device 34 may be a bolt having a nut 31 which fits in a recess 38 in the member 36 and a head 39 at the outer end thereof. There is a pin 40 which extends through the cam 3| and the engaging member 32 so as to permit a relative rocking movement of the two. This pin is free to move up and down with the members 3| and 32. The cam member 3| is arranged at the bottom similarly to the cam member l5, having the corners 23 and 24, and the engaging member 32 is provided with the hook 4| which hooks over the flange 21 of the rail 3. The handle 28 extends through the slot 29 and is U-shaped, the side members extending along the edge of the member 3| and 32.
When a pressure is applied to the door, to move it laterally apart from the handle, the cam device 3| acts to lift the engaging member 32 and cause the hook to engage the flange 21 of the rail and prevent movement of the door. When the handle is grasped and pressure is applied thereto, it engages the edge of the cam 3| and moves it so as to cause the engaging member 32 to lower and release the flange 21 so as to permit the free movement of the door by further pressure applied to the handle.
The rail 6 at its end is provided with a stop 42 which limits the opening movement of the door. When it is desired for any reason to remove the cam member and the rail engaging member and handle, it is only necessary to remove the stop 42 and then move the door so that the cam and rail engaging members are beyond the end of the rail. The cam member and the engaging member will then be dropped out through the handle. When it is desired to remove the handle, the bottom of the door is moved outwardly away from the car and the handle is then pushed inwardly, so as to remove it. The slot for the handle is large enough so that the outer end of the handle can be tilted upwardly to permit the stop 30 to pass the edge 30a on the door.
I claim:
1. A door controlling device comprising a rail along which the door travels, a holding device associated with said door having two members on opposite sides of said rail, means for moving said members relatively towards each other when pressure is applied to the door, to cause them to engage said rail and hold the door against movement.
2. A door controlling device comprising a rail along which the door travels, a holding device associated with said door adapted, when pressure is applied to the door, to cause the holding device to engage said rail and hold the door against movement, and a movable handle movably connected with said door and adapted, when moved, to release the holding device and to then move the door.
3. A door controlling device comprising a rail along which the door travels, a holding device associated with said door comprising a cam member and a rail engaging member connected together, the cam member, when pressure is applied to the door, acting to move the rail engaging member to engage the rail and hold the door against movement.
4. A door controlling device comprising a rail along which the door travels, a holding device associated with said door comprising a cam member and a rail engaging member connected together, the cam member, when pressure is applied to the door, acting to move the rail engaging member to engage the rail and hold the door against movement, and a handle movable with relation to said door and adapted, when moved, to move the cam member to release the rail engaging member and permit the door to be moved by further pressure applied to the door.
5. A door controlling device comprising a rail along which the door travels, a holding device associated with said door comprising a cam member and a rail engaging member connected together, the cam member having a rocking movement with relation to the rail engaging member and being provided with separated projections, one of which engages the upper face of the rail when pressure is applied to the door, to hold the door against movement.
6. A door controlling device comprising a rail along which the door travels, a holding device associated with said door comprising a cam member and a rail engaging member connected together, the cam member having a rocking movement with relation to the rail engaging member and being provided with separated projections, one of which engages the upper face of the rail when pressure is applied to the door, to hold the door against movement, and a u shaped handle between the members of which the cam member and rail engaging member are received and which, when pressure is applied to the handle, engages the cam and moves it to its releasing position so as to release the rail engaging member and permit the door to be moved by further pressure applied to the handle.
7. A door controlling device comprising a rail along which the door travels, a holding device associated with said door comprising a cam member and a rail engaging member connected together, the cam member having a rocking movement with relation to the rail engaging member and being provided with separated projections, one of which engages the upper face of the rail when pressure is applied to the door, to hold the door against movement, a cover for said cam member and rail engaging member fastened to said door, and a handle projecting through said cover and free to move with relation thereto in a direction substantially parallel to said door, the movement of the handle causing it to move the cam member so as to release it and the door engaging member and permit the door to be moved by further pressure applied to said handle. 7

A door controlling device comprising a rail along which the door travels, a holding device associated with said door comprising two members having portions on opposite sides of said rail, means for moving said portions relatively to cause said portions to move to lessen the distance between them, to grip the rail on opposite sides thereof when pressure is applied to the door, to hold it against movement.
9. A door controlling device comprising a rail along which the door travels, a holding device associated with said door comprising two members having portions on opposite sides of said rail, means for moving said portions relatively to cause said portions to move to lessen the distance between them, to grip the rail on opposite sides thereof when pressure is applied to the door, to hold it against movement, and a handle associated with said members which releases them from the rail when pressure is applied to the handle, so that the door may be moved by further pressure applied to the handle.
10. A door controlling device comprising a rail along which the door, travels, a holding device associated with said door for holding the door when pressure is applied to the door, said rail forming the support for supporting said holding device, and a covering device attached to said door, for covering said holding device, said covering device open at the bottom, so that when the door is moved to bring the holding device beyond the end of said rail, the holding device may be removed through the open bottom of said covering device.
