IMPROVEMENT IN SLEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,396, dated March 18, 1879; application filed December 30, 1878.
v To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN R. DEXTER, of Lancaster, in the county of Coos and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sled Clamp and Brace of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a top view of the forward part of a bob-sled to which my invention has been applied. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail side view of a part of the same onlarged, and part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 4 is a detail cross-section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of thesled-clamp for which Letters Patent No. 94,723 were granted to me September 14, 1869, so as to produce a stronger and better sled.
The invention consists in the clamp provided with a socket, and the base of the braces provided with a bulb, in combination with each other and the uprights for connecting the runners and the beam of a sled and in the braces strengthened by ribs, the tie-plate, and the base, cast in one piece, the clamp, the uprights, and the top brace, in combination with each other, and with the runners and the beam of a sled.
A are the runners, the forward ends of which are connected by the roller B, to which the tongue 0 is attached. Upon the upper edge of the runners A, directly beneath the beam D, is placed the clamp E, the flanges of which overlap the sides of the said runners A, and are secured in place by bolts or rivets.
In the center of the top of the clamp E is formed a socket or deep recess, to receive a bulb or knob formed upon the lower side of the base F of the braces G, and which is left a little rounding on its base, so it can rock and work as a hinge. The braces G incline from each other, and are strengthened by ribs formed upon their inner sides.
Upon the upper ends of the braces G is formed the tie-plate H, upon which the straight flat beam D rests, and which is secured to the said beam by rivets or bolts.
The base F, the braces G, and the tie-plate H are cast in one piece.
I are the uprights, which pass up through or have their lower ends embedded in the runners A, through the ends of the clamp E, through the tie-plate H, and through the beam D, and may be secured by nuts or not, as may be desired.
J are the braces, the middle parts of which are placed in cross-grooves in the upper side of the beam D, and have holes formed through them, through which the upper ends of the uprights I pass. The end parts of the braces J, at a little distance from the sides of the beam D, are bent downward at an obtuse angle, and their ends are bent outward, and are secured to the runners A by bolts or rivets.
The clamps E, the braces G, the tie-plates H, the uprights I, and the braces J are so formed that the runners A may incline from each other, and may thus brace each other. The grooves for the braces J and the holes for the uprights I are made larger than the said braces and "uprights, to form a loose connection, so that the runners may adjust themselves to uneven groimd, and may thus prevent breakage.
The inner edges of the bottoms of the runners A are beveled off, so that the shoes K may rest level upon the snow path, and may thus be worn even.
Around the side and end edges of the beam D is passed a metal band, L, which is secured in place by bolts or rivets, to strengthen the said beam, and prevent it from splitting or breaking under the pressure of heavy loads.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- 1. The clamp E, provided with a socket, and the base F of the braces G, provided with a bulb, in combination with each other and the uprights I, for connecting the runners and the beam of a sled, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The braces G, strengthened by ribs, the tie-plate H, and the base F, cast in one piece, the clamp E, the uprights I, and the brace J, in combination with each other, and with the runner A and the beam D, substantially as herein shown and described.
