No. 213,376 Patented-Mar. 18,1879.

HENRY BANISTER AND CHARLES H. LOVRIEN, OF ERIE, PENN SYLYANIA.
IMPROVEM ENT IN Pl PE-TONGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 21 3,376, dated March 18, 1879;
February 10, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY BANISTER and CHARLES H. LovRIEN, of Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Pipe-Tongs; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of side view of our improved pipe-ton gs, partly sectioned. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cubical bit.
The nature of the invention-consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a pipetongs having a hook and an opposite recess,
a cubical bit seated in said recess, an adj usting-screw, and a cross-bar extending across said recess and confining the bit, as hereinafter shown and described. I
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A designate the levers or legs of the tongs, halved into each other, and pivoted together in the usual way. The leg A terminates in a hook, a, into which the pipe is introduced, and the leg A has a rectangular recess, b, formed in it, in which is placed a cubical steel bit, B. This'bit is adjustable in or out by means of a set screw, (3, extending through a screwthreaded perforation in the back wall of the recess, as shown in Fig. 1.
application filed The bit is maintained in position by means of a cross-bar, 0, extending across the mouth of the recess. This bar is readily drawn out of its seat-holes i in the cheeks of the recess, and the bit removed. The bit projects out of the recess a sufficient distance, and its edge, by biting on the pipe, holds it stationary. The bit, being a cube, has twelve edges, any one of which maybe used with good results, so that as one becomes blunted by long use, another may be placed in position by removing the cross bar 0 and turning the bit. The effect of this is to render the bit always effectwe.
l Vhen, from long use, the edges of the bit are all blunted, another may be substituted therefor at a merely nominal cost.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a tongs having a hook, at, and an oppos'te recess, 12, of a cubical bit, B, seated in said recess, an adjustingscrew, and a cross-bar, 0, extending across said recess and confining the bit, substantially as specified.
In testimony that we. claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY BANISTER. CHARLES H. LOVRIEN.
