Description
Oct. 11, 1938.
A. F. HART SIGN Filed June 29, 1938 elf 130441444 Patented Oct. 11 1938 t SIGN Aubreyli, Hart, NewYork, N Y.
according to this invention, Figure 2 is an enlarged cross-section thereof b taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is'an enlarged cross-section thereof taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary detail perspective view of the cutaway corners ofthe upper frame.
The device comprises a pair of complementary, interfitting upper and lower frames generallyrdesignated as I and 2, respectively. These frames are preferably made of sheet material, but they may be molded or otherwise made. The lower frame 2 is of angular shape in cross-section and has a bottom flange 3 and an upright portion 4, the bottom flange being securedto a sign 5 by means of screws 5a or otherwise. The'sign 5 may be mounted in a recessed back 6, as shown in the drawing. The upright portion 4,'at,the
top of the frame, terminates in an inwardly ex tending overhanging lip 1. The upperframe is likewise of angular shape in cross-section and' at one end is constructed so as toslip under. the V overhanging lip of the bottom frame, as shown in Figure 2. The uprightflange of .the remaining sides of the upper frame has afportion 8 which is bent over outwardly anddownwardly and spaced from. the inner wall portion 9. to form an inverted U-shaped channel into which the upright flange 4 of the lower frame extends when the two frames are interfltted as shown in Fig-.
ure 3. The ends and edges of the upper frame are cut away as at H to accommodate the overhanging lip 1. The upper frame also has a. bottom flange I2 which is spaced from the flange 3. A pane of glass M or other transparent material is supported between these flanges to expose to view the sign or picture to be displayed. The overhanging lip I and theinverted U-shaped portions of the upper frame form a protecting hood for the edges of the lowerframe to prevent the entrance of foreign material into the body of the sign. Suitable gasket material I3 is disposed between the bottom frame 2 and the sign 5 and between the upper frame I and the glass I4 to make the sign water-tight; The two frames are fastened together by means of bolts 15 which f a sign --'constr'u'cted appli ation runezs, 193afs'et-iaijno. 216,564 V (o1. m-15 2) passthrpughthe, upright flanges of both frames. Drain holes ,IGare provided at the bottom of the frame 2 in the event any water should seep past the gaskets.
I It will be apparent that with this construction;
f to be understood that the drawing and description are merely for the purpose of illustrating the invention, and are not to be construed as limitations 'to the construction and arrangements shown and described. Changes in the construction and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the annexed claims.
I claim as my invention: 1. An interfitting frame for displaying pictures, signs and the like, comprising a back recessed to support the device displayed, a lower frame carried bythe back to support a sheet of transparent material within its margins, a complementary upper frame seated on the lower frame, said complementary frame having a marginal retaining flange for securingsaid transparent sheet over the device displayed, and means for fastening said frames together. I
2. An interfitting frame fordisplaying pictures,
' signs, and thelike, comprising aback recessed to support the device'displayed, a lower frame carried by the back to support a sheet of transparent material within its margins, said frame 7 being of angular shape in cross-section, one side securing said "transparent sheet over the device displayedyand means for fastening said frames together.
' 3. A device for supporting a'sheet of transparent material over a sign or the like comprising a pair of superposed frames of angular shape in cross-section, the bottom flange of the lower frame extending inwardly and forming a support for the' transparent material, the complementary upper frame being seated over the upright flange of the lower frame, said upper frame having an inwardly extending marginal flange to retain the transparent sheet in position, and
means for securing said frames together.
4. A device for supporting a sheet of transmarginal flange resting on the sign displayed to support a transparent sheet, a complementary, angular upper frame seated over the lower frame, said upper frame having an inwardly extending marginal flange for retaining the transparent sheet in position, the upright flange thereof lying within mthe boundaryof the lower frame and having-a portion bent over the upright" flange of the lower frame so as to form a hood over the lower frame, and means passing through both frames to fasten them together.
5. A device for supporting a sheet of transparent material over a sign or the like, comprising a pair of interfitting framesof angular crosssection, the bottom flange ofthe lower frame forming a marginal inwardly extending-portion adapted to rest on the sign to support a trans- "parent sheetjthe upright flange "having-.2 mar- -i'ginal inwardly extending lip on oneside, a complementary upper frame having an" inwardly. ex-
tendingrmarginal flange spaced fronithe bottom ;flang e of. the lower frame, theupnight flange of {the upper frame lying within thezboundary of the lower frame, with one side projecting beneath the overhangingwlip on: the lower frame, the: remaining sides havinggaportions Ibent over the upright flange of the lower frame to form a hood therefor.
6. An interfltting frame for displaying pictures, signs, and the like, comprising a lower frame having means for supporting a sheet of transparent material within its margins, said frame being of angular shape in cross-section, one side having an inwardly extending, overhanging marginal lip, a complementary upper frame seated. ,over; the loweroframe, one side-tthereof' projecting beneath the overhanging lip on the lower frame, the side walls of said uppervframe being cut away at one end to accommodate said overhanging lip, said complementary frame having a :;marginal inwardly extending retaining flange for .securing, said transparent sheet on the device displayed, and means for fastening said frames together. I
