1 Claim.

This invention relates to a garment for mens, womens, and childrens wear but more particularly to an outer wear garment of the waistband type.

The invention has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth a garment so constructed, whereby when it is worn it will snugly hug the waist of the body of the wearer for suspending it without disturbing the appearance of the garment and at the same time maintain the front of the waistband smooth and flat without discomfiture to the wearer.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment of the type referred to including a snug fitting suspension therefor so constructed and arranged to not only satisfactorily suspend, but also to enhance the appearance of the garment at the front of its waistband.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment of the type referred to including as a part thereof a yieldable suspension therefor, of a form which dispenses with the use of a belt slidably coupled to the waistband for binding the latter to the waist of the wearer to suspend the garment.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment of the type referred to including a satisfactory suspension therefor so formed and arranged to permit of the free breathing of the wearer when the garment is worn and in snug engagement with the waist of the wearer.

A further object of the invention is to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment of the type referred to including an internally arranged elastic suspension element therefor, attached at its ends to the waistband at two spaced points of the inner face of the front of the latter and attached intermediate its ends to the inner face of the back of the waistband.

Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment of the class referred to which is simple in its construction, strong, durable, compact, readily assembled, thoroughly efficient for the purpose intended thereby, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

To the above ends essentially and to others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein is shown an embodiment of the 55 invention, but it is to be understood that changes,

variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

The garment is illustrated by way of example 7 as a pair of shorts, but it is to be understood that it is not limited to such form as it relates to any type of garment having a waistband at its top or bottom.

The garment as illustrated is what is termed a pair of shorts, is generally indicated at 5 and includes a body part 6 which is provided at its top with a waistband l and has depending from its bottom a pair of legs 8, 9.

The waistband l centrally of its back It] is formed with a button hole I I and its sides l3, M with button holes I5, l6 respectively. The button holes I l l5, l6 are disposed lengthwise and preferably on the longitudinal median of the waistband.

Arranged within the top of the garment and. opposing the inner face of the waistband l is an elastic suspension element ll of strap-like form having its body preferably of a width less than that of the body of waistband l and is so shown. The lower lengthwise edge of element I'l aligns with the bottom, its upper lengthwise edge is positioned below the top and its length is materially less than that of Waistband I.

The element l1 consists of a single length of elastic tape 18 having its end terminal portions inturned or reverted to form. folds I9, 20 positioned against the rear face of the tape. Arranged. against the'rear face of the tape I8, at the transverse center thereof is a button; 2| which is anchored to element I] by the sewing 22.

22, 23 when the buttons tend to move inwardly or shifted rearwardly at an inclination to the horizontal on the application of pressure to the ends of element IT. The central part of the back portion of element l1 constitutes a cushion for button 2| when pressure is 7 applied to the latter. The

22, 23 coact with the button holes l5, [6 respectively for connecting the ends of the element I! to the points of mergence of the front l2 of the waistband l with the sides l3, M of the latter. The length of that portion 26 of element l1 extending from button hole I l to button hole I 5 is materially less than that portion of the waistband extending from button hole IE to button hole I l. The

length of that portion 21 of element I! extending from button hole H to button hole I6 is materially less than that portion of the waistband extending from button hole 116 to button hole I I. The portions 26, 21 of element I! are of like length and when extended will be positioned against the inner faces of the sides and back of the waistband. The latter conceals the element IT. The lower part 28 of element 21 is transversely corrugated and its upper part 29 is lengthwisely corrugated whereby said lower part 28 is more freely elastic and pliable than said upper part 29. When. the garment is worn the element i! will be extended to yieldingly and snugly engage the back and sides of the waist of the wearer and act as a suspension for and to hold the garment up. The extension of element I! will not many manner disturb the appearance of the garment and at the same time permanently maintain the front of the waistband smooth, fiat, and ungathered whereby the appearance of such front is enhanced as the button 2! is on the rear face of the tape l8 and the

22, 23 on the outer faces of the folds, the inner surface of element I! between the bends of the folds will be uninterrupted whereby, when element I1 is worn and extended no discomfiture from buttons bearing on the wearer is present.

The construction of the garment will provide for it to snugly fit around the waist thereby eliminating all possibility of the garment dropping down and at the same time doing away with the unsightliness caused by the pulling of a belt tight, as well as the overcoming objection of a tight belt preventing free breathing due to the binding of the waist band against the wearer.

What I claim is:

A garment including a body portion formed at its top with a waist band, said waste band at each end of its front portion and centrally of its back portion being provided with a button hole; a continuous one-piece band elastic from end to end arranged to oppose the major portion of the inner face of the waist band, said elastic band having its end terminal-portions reverted against its outer side to form folds for reinforcing the ends of such band, a button secured to the elastic band and positioned against the outer surface of and cushioned by each reverted end terminal portion and a button secured to the transverse median of the outer side of and cushioned by the elastic band whereby the latter will be provided, between the bends of the folds with an uninterrupted surface on its inner side, said buttons coacting with said button holes for detachably connecting the elastic band to the waist band, and said elastic band when formed with the reverted end terminal portions and connected to the waist band having its length less than the combined length of the back and side portions of the waist band disposed between the front button holes whereby the elastic band, when the garment is worn, will be longitudinally stretched for holding the garment in position on the wearer and will bear on the inner faces of the said back and side portions.
