' 0. RUTZ & J. WEISER. Pinchers for Attaching Seam-Protectors,
Paper-Fasteners, 8:0.
No- 212,988. Patented Mar. 4,1879.
Inventors: 5.1/ M fiz N.PETER5, FNOTO-UTHOGHAPHER, WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL BUTZ AND JAKOB WEISER, OF BROOKLYN, E. D., NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PINCHERS FORATTACHlNG SEAM-PROTECTORS, PAPER-FASTENERS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,988, dated March 4, 1879 application filed December 4, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we. CARL RUTZ and J AKQB WEISER, both of the city of Brooklyn, E. D.,
county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in v Pinchers for Attaching Seam-Protectors, Paper-Fasteners, 850.; and that the following is a full and exact description of our invention.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and efficient instrument for affixing a certain class of seam-protectors, paper-fasteners, and the like, which will be herein described in connection with our improvement.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved pinchers. Fig. 2 is a section on line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a seam-protector or fastener as applied to a piece of cloth, and Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate the construction of the device adapted to be applied by our improved pinchers.
The pinchers, as illustrated by Figs. 1 and 2, are provided with jaws b b, adapted to open and close in the usual manner, and each jaw on the outer end of its inner surface is provided with a platform, 19
Near the inner end of the upper jaw are secured two plate or strip springs, c, which extend forward and terminate under the platform p of the upper jaw of the pinchers, and are separated by a little space from said platform. The outer ends of these springs are separated by a distance nearly equal to the distance between the prongs of the fastener or seam-protector which the pinchers are intended to apply, as will hereinafter be referred to. The inner edge of each of these springs directly under the platform 11' has formed in it a notch, f, the lower edges of which are beveled, and the two notches are directly opposite each other.
The tips of the handles a of the pinchers have formed in them notches a, and these handles are kept normally separated by a spring, 8.
In affixing one of the fasteners or protectors of the kind adapted to be applied by our pinchers, the prongs B of the plate A are to be inserted through the fabric, and the plate 0 then placed over said prongs, which project through the holes 0 therein. The handles a are then closed upon the two prongs, catching the points of said prongs in the notches a, and giving them an inward inclination. The jaws of the pinchers are then placed in such position that the top of the platform 12 comes against the back of the plate A of the fastener or protector, and when the jaws are closed the notches f in the springs embrace the 0pposite prongs of said plate and properly guide them toward each other, the platform 19 pressing upon the bent ends of said prongs and mashing them down into the groove D, which connects the holes 6 in the plate 0. When the pinchers are opened the springs'c throw the fastener and material clear of the platform p,'and the pinchers are removed ready for use upon another fastener.
Having now described our invention, we claim- I 1. The combination, with the jaws b, having the platforms 1) and p, of the springs c, having the notches f, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The pinchers herein described, having the jaws b, platforms 1) and p, springs 0, provided with the notchesf, and the handles a having the notches a, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
CARL RUTZ. JAKOB WEISER. Witnesses:
ERNST BILIIUBER, E. VOLKMANN.
