UNITED $TATEs PATENT MICHAEL POSZ, O1! SHELBYVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BlLL-FILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,979, dated March 4, 1879 application filed December 26, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that. I, MICHAEL Posz, of Shelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State of Indiana, have invented a new and 1mproved Way-Bill and Blank-File, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through m. Fig. 3 is a side view showing the index. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan showing a shelf supported by a pin.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspon din g parts. 7
The object of this invention is to furnish a file which shall save labor, and add much to the convenience of filing way-bills, invoices, blanks, bills, 850., in railroad, express, and other offices.
The case A contains numerous shelves B B B, resting on a carrier, 0, which is supported by springs D D, that are attached to the bottom of the case at a, a.
Each alternate shelf is marked with a certain letter of the alphabet, as A B G D, 810., and below each one is a duplicate marked A1 B1 C1 D1, &c., so that to each letter of the alphabet there are two shelves ordinarily assigned, though obviously the number may be increased or diminished at will according to the requirements of the office using the file.
The cord E passes through a hole in the bottom of the case, and is attached'to the shelf-carrier O. The other end of the cord is made fast to a foot board or lever, F, which may be fastened to the case or floor, as may best suit the position in which the case may be placed. Pressure upon the lever F contracts the springs, allowing the operator after inserting the pins H H through holes I) b b from front to back of case, or the reverse, to support the superincumbent shelves, to have access to any shelf in the case, and to put in or remove therefrom any bills or papers without inconvenience.
For the convenience of the person using the file an index, I, is provided on a side of the case, so arranged as to admit of opening and closing, on which may be inscribed the names of cities, offices, or persons, 850., from which or from whom came the bills, statements, letters, blanks, &c., that are containedpn the corresponding shelves.
The projecting shelf K on the front'of the ease serves as a table or desk. The apron L, attached to theshelf-carrier G, and moving up or down with it, serves to complete an inclosure for the springs D D, and to insure their being kept in place.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the case A, the adjustable shelves B B B, the carrier 0, the pins H H, the springs D D, and the index 1, arranged, operating, and operated mechanically, sub stantially as herein shown and for the purpose described.
