Description

Aug. 30, 1 938.
o D. LEGG WRENCH Filed Sept. 25, 1936 awa ma.
ATTORNEY WITNESS Patented Aug. 30, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The invention relates to a wrench and more especially to a pipe wrench.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of. a wrench wherein through the use of a runner upon the shank, the inner jaw can be set with respect to the outer jaw so that work can be firmly and securely gripped for the turning thereof.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a wrench wherein the inner jaw is susceptible of rocking adjustment with respect to the outer jaw thereby adapting the wrench to different sizes of work and particularly pipes of varying cross sectional diameters.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench wherein the construction thereof. is novel in form, particularly with respect to the mounting of the inner jaw and its adjustment with respect to the outer jaw.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench which is extremely simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, readily and easily adjusted, possessing maximum strength and durability, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a View similar to Figure 1 showing an adjustment of the wrench.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the wrench constituting the present invention comprises a shank in having flattened opposite faces II and opposed threaded surfaces l2, respectively, these being coextensive for a major portion of. the length of said shank. At the outer end of the shank I is a pivot ear [3 carrying a pivot I4 swingingly connecting the straight stem I5 of an outer jaw IS with the shank, said jaw having the serrated curved work engaging face l1 relatively wide to assure the gripping of a piece of work firmly.
which discloses the Rotatable on the shank lil is an internally threaded feed sleeve l8, the internal threads l9 being engaged with the threads 12 on the said shank. This sleeve constitutes a runner and is formed with a reduced end portion 20 loosely 5 embraced by a collar 2! having the pivot ear 22 carrying a pivot 23 which swingingly mounts a link 24. The link is outwardly curved and this link at its car 25 carries the pivot 26 which connects the link with a movable inner jaw 21 having the serrated work engaging face 28. The movable jaw Z'l is adjustably and swingingly connected by a pivot pin 29 with the stem l5, the latter having the holes 30 spaced apart therein for selectively accommodating said pin. In this manner the jaw 21 can be movedrelative to the jaw H5 according to the size of work to be gripped by these jaws.
The collar 2| is loosely held on the reduced end 26 of the sleeve l8 by a retaining nut 3| and thus the sleeve can be freely rotated on the shank N]. This sleeve IB is formed with flattened outer faces-32 to enable the grasping thereof by the hand so that said sleeve can be turned or rotated upon the shank to effect the rocking adjustment of the jaw 21 relative to the jaw I6 of the wrench.
The collar 2! at diametrically opposite sides has formed therewith frictional guide fingers 33 which engage with the flattened opposite faces II of the shank ill to avoid the turning of the collar when the sleeve I8 is rotated to swingably adjust the jaw 21, these fingers being in sliding contact with the said fiat faces ll of the shank throughout the travel of the sleeve. .more, the fingers 33 will brace the collar 2| against any canting action exerted by the link 24 tending to cause the collar to bind on the sleeve it so that the sleeve may always turn freely.
The shank has fitted thereto a suitable handle or grip 34.
The wrench at the working faces I! and 28 of the jaws l6 and 21 is relatively wide to assure a broad gripping action upon the work such as a pipe or other article to be turned. The serrated faces I1 and 28 will assure biting action of the jaws on the work to avoid any possibility of the slipping of. the jaws thereon.
What is claimed is:
1. A wrench of the character described comprising a shank, a sleeve threaded on said shank, a collar encircling said sleeve, a jaw having a stem pivoted to said shank, a second jaw pivoted to the stern and adjustable thereon, a link pivoted to the collar and to said last-mentioned jaw, and 55 Further- 35 fingers on the collar and frictionally engaging opposite faces of the shank for preventing turning of the collar on the turning of the sleeve.
2. A wrench of the character described comprising a shank, a sleeve threaded on said shank, a collar coupled with said sleeve, a jaw having a stem pivoted to said shank, a second jaw pivoted to the stem and adjustable thereon, a link pivoted to the collar and to said last-mentioned jaw, and fingers on the collar and frictionally engaging opposite faces of. the shank for preventing turning of the collar on the turning of the sleeve, the said stem having a plurality of openings and a separable pivot for the last-mentioned jaw and selectively engageable in said openings.
