Description

UNITED STnTEs PATENT OEEIoE.
REUBEN S. OIIAFFEE, OF SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO J. N. REEOE, OF SAME PLAGE.
iMPROVEIVIENT IN MAGAZINE FIRE-ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,657, dated February 25, 1879; application filed December 19, 187e.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN S. GHAEFEE, of Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magazine Fire-Arms; and I do -hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the vaccompanying drawings, which form part of this specication.
My invention relates to magazine lire-arms, and is intended partially as an improvement uponLetters Patent No. 161,480, granted to me March 30, 1875 5 and it consists in the construction of the cut-off or receiver and of the extractor, and also in combining with the extractor a mechanism vfor shortening its stroke, whereby the magazine may be out off, to be held in reserve, While the anni may be still used as a single breech-loader, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
Figure l is a vertical sectional view of my invention, shown in connection with the magazine in the breech. Fig. 2 is an enlarged de, tached view of the same.
In a magazine lire-arm of the class to which my invention appertains there are used two loading-bars, one of which is stationary and holds the cartridges in position,
while the other has a backward and forward motion, corresponding with the action of the breech-block as it travels back and forth.
A represents the breech-block, constructed and operating substantially in the same manner as described in my former patent, above referred to.
B is the extractor or finger, which slides in slide abe raised the shoulder b on the extractor Will come in contact therewith and stop the movement of the extractor, thus shortening its stroke, and by moving the slide down out ofthe way of the shoulder b will lengthen the stroke.
By this means I can lengthen or shorten the movement of the extractor or finger, which is in combination with the movable loading-bar, and so cut off the communication with said sliding bar or thev magazine, so as to hold the magazine in reserve and still use the gun as a single breech-loader, having in reserve the magazine for close quarters. n
By pushing up the slide a it will connect the loading-bar with the magazine, and the action of the breech-block back and forth will put acartridge in the receiver, which will drop in front of the block on its -backward motion, carrying the loading-bar with it, and as it goes forward will put another in the receiver, and so on until all the cartridges are f exhausted.
It will be seen that by shortening the stroke or travel'of the loading-bar I keep it from passing under and back of the rims of the cartridges, so that it will not bring any cartridges forward; and by using a slide or thumb-screw to shorten or lengthen the travel of the extractor or iinger, which works in connection with the hook on the loading-bar, it governs the downward travel of said loading-bar, and so can be made touse or cut off the magazine.
The linger B is made strong and sharp at d on the hook that lits the shell, thus making it an extractor and linger both.
D represents the cut-off or receiver at the front end of the magazine, for the purpose of holding and forcing the, cartridge in front of the breech-block as it passes downward. This receiver is pivoted at t' a suitable distance from the end, so as to leave a projecting fingenpiece, D', at the front end. By pressing on this linger-piece the rear end of the receiver will rise in front of the magazine, so that a cartridge can be inserted, making a single breech-loader when the magazine is cut off, as
above described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, nnddesiretosecnre by' Letters Patent, is-
1. The slide a, having the clamping-screw C to hold it in position, in combination with the movable breech-block A and the sliding finger B, having the shoulder b, in front ol which the slide catches, so its to shorten the movements of the finger B, substantially as shown and described.
2. The receiver D, pivot-ed at i, and provided at its front end with the projecting ngerpiece D', `substantially las and Afor the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that l cla-im the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of December, 1878.
REUBEN S. CHAFFEE.
