Be it known that I, ALFRED H. BISHOP, a citizen of the United States. and a resident of the city of Chicago. county of Cook. and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Firearn'is. of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fire arms and has for its object the provision of an improved mechanism for firing double barrel tire arms with a single trigger.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification. and in which.

The 'n'eferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a trigger 1 which may be of any usual or desired form and mounted in the usual manner. A shifting block 2 is pivoted near its forward end as at 3 to the top of trigger 1 and a shifting dog 4 is pivoted at its rearward end 3 to the top of block 2. Standards (1 and T are arranged respectively at the front and rear of trigger 1. A plunger rod 8 is given a pivotal bearing in the end of dog 4 and a sliding bearing in a hemispherical bearing block 9 pivotally mounted in a bean ing in standard (3. Plunger S carries collar 10 and a spring 11 in'iprisoned between said collar and bearing block 9. At its forward end dog 4 carries a downwardly extending projection 12 overhanging the forward end of block which is provided with stops '13 at either side to limit the swing of dog 4. By this construction it will be observed. that with the parts in the positions illustrated in Fig. 8 the block will be maintained by the action of spring 11 in the position shown. but that upon shifting of the dog 4 to the other side of pivot 3. the tendencyof spring 11 will be to shift block '2 to the other side of trigger 1. Standard T carries a projection 14 arranged above block 2 and the rearward end of block 2 is provided with notches 15 adapted to engage and slide vcrtically on projection 14 when block 2 is elevated while in either of its operative positions. This. it will be observed. will prevent block 2 from being shifted from operative position during the operative or upward movement of trigger 1.
Trigger levers to and 17 are pivoted to standard (1 and extend rearward at either side of block Each of said trigger levers is provided at its rearward end with a depending outwardly oflset lug 18 which serves as a stop to limit the swing of block 2 in that direction. Each of said trigger levers is also provided with a shoulder 19 which lies in the vertical path of block when said block is resting against the lug 18 on the corresponding trigger lever. A
rock shaft 20 is pivoted in standards (3 and 7 between and slightly above trigger levers 1t; and 17 and a rock bar 21 is secured to the rear portion of roclt shaft 20 and each end of said rock bar rests upon the top of the ( IOIIQSPOIldlDg trigger lever 16 or 17. Rock shaft 20 also carries a depending shift arm 22 which is bifurcated at its lower end and embraces plunger 9. By this arrangement it will be observed that upon operation of trigger 1. block 9 will be elevated and carry with it the trigger lever against which it happens to rest. Elevation of that trigger lever causes oscillation of rock shaft 20 so that plunger 8 and spring 11 are shifted to their other position. iarrying dog 4 with them. and exert a tendency to shift block 2 to engagement with the other trigger lcver. Said shifting of block however. is prevented by the action of projection 14 until near the end of the inoperative stroke of trigger 1. when said block is freed from the. domination of projection 14 and spring 11 permitted to shift the block to its other position in engagement with the other trigger lever. Vhen in the latter position, it will be observed, that another operation of trigger 1 will cause the other trigger lever to be moved as before and block 2 to be shifted back into engagement with the first mentioned trigger lever. Thus, it will be observed, that continued operations of trigger 1 will cause the elevation of trigger lcvers 1G and 17 alternately.
Each of the lugs 18 is provided with an outwardly extending stud 23 which engages under the end of a sear 24, the other end of said sear being arranged to engage the sear notch 25 in one of the hammers 26 of the fire arm. The hammers 26 are the ordinary hammers of an ordinary double barreled hammerless fire arm and are cocked by the breaking of the gun in the usual manner, such portions being of the old and well known construction need no further descrip: tion here. It will be observed, that upon elevation of either of the trigger levers 16 or 17 a corresponding sear 24 will be operated to release the corresponding hammer 26 and thus the corresponding barrel of the fire arm will be fired as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
A safety thumb-piece 27 is slidably mounted on the top of the gun lock in the usual position and a safety slide 28 operat ing within the lock is secured to thumbpiece 27, by means of a pivot pin 29. At its lower end pivot pin 29 carries a forwardly projecting bifurcated arm 31 and a spring 30 is imprisoned between said arm 31. and the bottom of slide 28, thus serving to yieldingly hold the parts in position. At its forward end slide 28 carries an arm 31 abutting the end of plunger rod 32' which passes through a stationary guide 32 and pivotally engages a laterally extending arm 33 fixed to the pivot post 34 of the ordinary top lever or snap 34 of the fire arm. A spring 35 is imprisoned between guide 32 and the head 36 of rod 32. thus tending to hold the rod 32 normally in forward position. At its rearward end slide 28 is pro vided with a lock projection 37 adapted to engage locking grooves 38 in the under side of the top tang of the fire arm, said locking projection thus serving to yieldingly lock said slide in either its forward or rearward position. A rock shaft 39 is rockingly mounted in said slide 28 and the under side of the top tang of the fire arm and is provided at its rearward end with a depending arm 40 passing through a slot 41 in the bottom of slide 28 and engaging between the bifurcations in the end of arm 31 as shown in Fig. 2. At its forward end shaft 39 is provided with a depending lock bar 42 passing through a slot 43 in the bottom of slide 28 and arranged in operative relation with the rock bar 21 on rock shaft 20, so
that when safety slide 28 is drawn to its rearward position, lock bar 42 will over one end or the other of rock bar 21 and prevent elevation of the corresponding trigger lever 16 and 17 and thus prevent firing of the fire arm. Rock bar 21 is provided near either end in its upper portion with grooves 45 adapted to receive the lower end of lock bar 42 and render the locking effect more sure. At its upper end pivot pin 29 carries an indicator finger 44 by means of which shaft 39 and lock bar 42 may be rocked to different positions.
In use the fire arm is loaded and cocked in the usual manner by breaking the same through the medium of top snap 34. Upon the operation of top snap 34 to the right as is usual, arm 33 will operate to push slide 28 rearwardly to safe position and consequently lock bar 42. lVhen it is desired to tire the fire arm safety block 27 is pushed forwardly thus removing lock bar 42 from rock bar 21 and permitting firing of both barrels of the fire arm by two consecutive operations of trigger 1 explained above. If for any reason the right barrel of the fire arm alone should be fired and the user not desiring at that time to reload the right barrel, the indicator finger 44 may be shifted to the left of the position shown in Fig. 1, thus indicating that the next fire will be from the leftbarrel, in which position the safety thumbpiece may be again set to safe position without disturbing this condition. The mechanism set forth will be found to be simple and economical of construction and highly eflieient in use. Should it be desired to fire the left barrel first, linger 44 may be swung to the left while both barrels are in cocked position and safety block 27 forced to its rearward position, thus causing lock bar 42 to engage rock bar 21 and if said rock bar is not already in proper position for firing of the left barrel upon the first operation of trigger 1, lock bar 42 will depress that end of rock bar 21 and thus set the mechanism for firing the left barrel first.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation or modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details set forth, but desire to avail myself of such "ariations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a double barreled fire arm having two hammers ar ranged to fire both of its barrels, of sears arrang d to hold said arms in cocked positions, a trigger; a block pivoted to swing transversely of said trigger; a dog pivoted to swing transversely of said block; means for limiting the swing of said block and dog in each direction; ashifting spring connected wit-h said dog and arranged to shift said block from one limit of its movement to the other when the spring is shifted from one position to another; trigger levers arranged to be engaged by said block at each limit of its movement; an operative connection between said trigger levers and said sears; and means for shifting said spring upon operation of said trigger, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a double barreled fire arm having two hannners arranged to tire both of its barrels, of sears arranged to hold said hammers in cocked positions, a trigger; a block pivoted to swing transversely of said trigger; a dog pivoted to swing transversely of said block; means for limiting the swing of said block and dog in each direction; a shifting spring connected with said dog and arranged to shift said block from one limit of its movement to the other when the spring is shifted from one position to another; trigger levers arranged to be engaged by said block at each limit of its movement; an operative connection between said trigger levers and said sears; a rock shaft arranged between said trigger le vers; a rock bar on said shaft and bearing against each of said levers; and a shifting arm secured to said rock shaft and arranged to shift said spring, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a double barreled fire arm having two hammers arranged to fire both of its barrels, of sears arranged to hold said hammers in cocked positions: a trigger; a block pivoted to swing transversely of said trigger; means for locking said block against swinging at each limit of its movement and during operations of said trigger; a dog pivoted to swing transversely of said block; means for limiting the swing of said block and dog in each direction; a shifting spring connected with said dog and arranged to shift said block from one limit of its movement to the other when the spring is shifted from one position to another; trigger levers arranged to be engaged by said block at each limit of its movement; an operative connection between said trigger levers and said sears; and means for shifting said spring upon operation of said trigger, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a double barreled fire arm having two hammers an ranged to fire both of its barrels; of sears arranged to hold said hammers in cocked positions; a trigger; a block pivoted to swing transversely of said trigger; means for locking said block against swinging at each limit of its movement and during oper ations of said trigger; a dog pivoted to swing transversely of said block: means for limiting the swing of said block and dog in each direction; a shifting spring connected with said dog and arranged to shift said block from one limit of its movement to the other when the spring is shifted from one position to another; trigger levers arranged to be engaged by said block at each limit of its movement; an operative connection between said trigger levers and said sears; a rock shaft arranged between said trigger levers; a rock bar on said shaft and bearing against each of said levers; and a shifting arm secured to said rock shaft and arranged to shift said spring, substantially as described.

The combination with a double barreled fire arm having two hammers arranged to fire both of its barrels, of sears arranged to thold said arms in cocked positions, a trigger; a block pivoted to swing transversely ,of said trigger; a dog pivoted to swing transversely of said block: means for limit- =Zing the swing of said block and dog in each direction; a shifting spring connected with said dog and arranged to shift said block from one limit of its movement to the other when the spring is shifted from one position to another; trigger levers arranged to be engaged by said block at each limit of its movement; an operative connection between said trigger levers and said sears; a rock shaft arranged between said trigger levers; a rock bar on said shaft and bearing against each of said levers; a shifting arm secured to said rock shaft and arranged to shift said spring: a safety slide: and a lock bar on said slide arranged to lock said trigger levers against operation when in one position and to release said levers when in another position, substantially as described.
7. The combination with a double barrcled fire arm having two hammers arranged to fire both of its barrels, of sears arranged to hold said hammers in cocked positions; a trigger; a block pivoted to swing transversely of said trigger; means for locking said block against swinging at each limit of its movement and during operations of said trigger; a dog pivoted to swing transversely of said block; means for limiting the swing of said block and dog in each direction; a shifting spring connected with said dog and arranged to shift said block from one limit of its movement to the other when the spring is shifted from one position to another; trigger levers arranged to be engaged by said block at each limit of its movement; an operative connection between said trigger levers and said sears; means for shifting said spring upon operation of said trigger; a safety slide; and a lock bar on said slide arranged to-lock said trigger levers against operation when in one position and to release said levers when in another position substantially as described.

The combination with a double barreled fire arm having two hammers arranged to fire both of its barrels, of sears arranged to hold said hammers in cocked positions; a trigger; a block pivoted to swing transversely of said trigger; means for locking said block against swinging at each limit of its movement and during operations of said trigger; a dog pivoted to swing trans versely of said block; means for limiting the swing of said block and dog in each direction; a shifting spring connected with said dog and arranged to shift said block from one limit of its movement to the other when the spring is shifted from one position to another; trigger levers arranged to be engaged by said block at each limit of its movement; an operative connection between said trigger levers and said sears; a rock shaft arranged between said trigger levers; a rock bar on said shaft and bearing against each of said levers; a shifting arm secured to said rock shaft and arranged to shift said sprin a safety slide; and a lock bar on said slide arranged to lock said trigger levers against operation when in one position and to release said levers when in another posit-ion substantially asdescribed.

The combination with a double barreled fire arm having two hammers arranged to fire bot-h of its barrels, of a trigger; standards arranged in the lock of the fire arm at each end of said trigger; a block pivoted at its forward end to the top of said trigger; a dog pivoted at its rearward end to the top of said block; a stop on the forward end of said dog overhanging the forward end of said block; stops at each side of the forward end of said block and arranged to limit the swing of said dog in each direction; a centrally arranged plunger slidably and pivotally mounted in the forward standard and having a pivotal bearing against the forward end of said dog; a collar on said plunger; a spring imprisoned between said collar and said forward standard; a trigger lever pivoted to each side of said forward standard and arranged to be engaged by said block when swung to its different position; a rock shaft mounted on said standards between said trigger levers; a rock bar on said rock shaft bearing on the top of each of said trigger levers; a shifting arm secured to said rock shaft and engaging said plunger whereby upon rocking of said shaft said plunger will be shifted to cause shifting of said block during inoperative movements of said trigger; a safety stop on said rear standard there being notches provided in the rear end of said block adapted to slidably engage said stop upon upward movement of said block when in either of its operative positions; sears arranged to lock said hammers in cocked positions; and operative connections between said sears and said trigger levers, substantially as described.

The combination with a double barreled fire arm having two hammers arranged to fire both of its barrels, of a trigger; standards arranged in the lock of the fire arm at each end of said trigger; a block pivoted at its forward end to the top of said trigger; a dog pivoted at its rearward end to the top of said block; a stop on the forward end of said dog overhanging the forward end of said block; stops at each side of the forward end of said block and arranged to limit the swing of said dog in each direction; a centrally arranged plunger slidably and pivotally mounted in the forward standard and having a pivotal bearing against the forward end of said dog; a collar on said plunger; a spring imprisoned between said collar and said forward standard; a trigger lever pivoted to each side of said forward standard and arranged to be engaged by said block when swung to its different positions; a rock shaft mounted on said standards between said trigger levers; a rock bar on said rock shaft and bearing on the top of each of said trigger levers; a shifting arm secured to said rock shaft and engaging said plunger whereby upon rocking of said shaft said plunger will be shifted to cause shifting of said block during inoperative movements of said trigger; a safety stop on said rear standard there being notches provided in the rear end of said block adapted to slidably engage said stop upon upward movement of said block when in either of its operative positions; sears arranged to lock said hammers in-cockedpo-Y Tn testimony whereof I have signed my sitions; operatlve connectlons between said name to this specification in the presence of sears and said trigger levers; a safety slide; two snhscnlnng witnesses.
