WASHING-MACHINE.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, W. A. JORDAN, of Thibodeaux, in the parish of Lafourche and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Clothes-Tashing Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, said drawing being a vertical central section of my improvement.

This invention relates to an improvement in that class of clothes washing machines generally known as tub machines, in which a horizontal rubber or disk is operated by hand within the ordinary wash-tub, the bottom of the tub and the under or face side of the disk or rubber being provided with radial or other projections, in order to subject the clothes to the necessary rubbing or friction.

The object of the within described invention is to simplify the class of machines above mentioned and to facilitate generally the manual operation, but more especially the proper adjustment of the disk or rubber while the clothes are being placed in and removed from the tub.

The invention consists in having a vertical tube fitted centrally in the bottom of the tub, so as to serve as a guide for the shaft of the disk or rubber vand at the same time serve as an eduction ipe to let off the water from the tub, the dis; or rubber shaft being slotted longitudinally and having a key or pin passing through it, which key serves to retain the shaft and allow the disk or rubber when raised to rest on the side of the tub.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.

A, represents a tub constructed in the usual way, and secured to a proper bench B.

C, is a metal tube the upper end of which is fitted to the bottom a, of the tub A, the interior of the tube communicating with the interior of the tub. The tube C, extends downward nearly to the Hoor and is provided with a faucet b, near its lower end.

The upper surface of the bottom a, of the tub has taper radial projections c, attached to it and similar projections CZ, are attached to the under surface of the disk or rubber D. This disk is constructed in the usual way, and has two uprights e, e, attached to it near its periphery at opposite sides of its center. The upper ends of the uprights are connected by a crosspiece E, in the center of which the upper end of a shaft F, is fitted. The shaft F, passes loosely through the center of the disk or rubber D, said shaft having a shoulder f, formed on it which covers the aperture in the disk through which the shaft passes.

The shaft F, passes within the tube C, and extends down nearly to its lower end, said shaft being slotted longitudinally nearly its whole length below the disk or rubber as shown at g, the slot passing entirely through the shaft. Through the slot g, a pin or key G, passes, said pin or key being secured across the orifice of the tube C.

The operation is as follows The clothes to be washed are placed within the tub A, the disk or rubber D, resting upon them and the disk or rubber is operated by applying the hands to the ends of the crosspiece E, the disk or rubber being turned or worked back and forth in a semirotating oscillating manner the clothes being subjected thereby to the necessary rubbing to cleanse them. The tube O, serves as a guide for the shaft F, and all bearings and guides above the disk or rubber are dispensed with and the waste water may be drawn from the tub by opening the faucet b. When the clothes are cleansed the disk or rubber D is elevated as far as the key Gr, will allow it to ascend, said key serving as a stop and also as a joint as the disk or rubber when elevated, is turned at one side so as to rest on the side of the tub, as shown in the drawing. The clothes may then be taken out from the tub and others to be washed placed in it. The disk or rubber by being thus placed allowing free access to the tub.

The tub and disk or rubber are well known and in common use for washing clothes, and I therefore do not claim separately such device; but,

The combination of the tube C, slotted shaft F, and pin or key G, attached respectively to the tub A, and disk or rubber D, and arranged to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
