In Belgium October 12, 1935 3 Claims. (Cl. 132-79) This invention relates to feminine toilet outfits generally called "vanity cases and which comprise a fiat case or casket formed of an entirely metallic ,box or a box of any other rigid material,

with jointing lid. This box decorated in any desired manner, for example so as to imitate tortoise-shell, mother of pearl, ivory, precious woods or metals etc., adorned with set stones, filigranes, laces, embroideries etc., is actually one of the preferred accessories of feminine toilet; it contains fixed or removable compartments or divisions for powder, beauty cream, cigarettes, lipstick, paint, etc., these compartments being themselves shut by means of separate lids.

Is The lid itself comprises inside a looking glass and the whole, very fiat, very compact, not cumbersome and very smart, holds in the actual fashion the place of the former hand-bag.

Unhappily, it does not allow like the hand or 0 portfolio bag, to place in it various accessories,

which are nevertheless indispensable, such as handkerchief, purse, note-case, comb, note-book and other small usual articles, which renders the diffusion of these cases rather difiicult, those outfits being finally only carried away on very definite occasions and by a very restrained class or society.

The invention has for an object to combine such an outfit with a hand-bag allowing to take away as a whole and under a very reduced volume, the

various usual accessories.

It has been suggested to combine a hand-bag or purse-like bag or pocket with a powder box or 'a vanity-case, but in these old combinations, the

hand-bag is directly mounted on one external face or side of the vanity-case.

According to the invention, one side or face of the vanity-case, for instance the bottom of the outer body, is removed, leaving only a frame which supports the internal body of the case. The hand-bag is of the same size as this frame, and is mounted on a rigid support maintained inside the outer body, between the inner body and said frame, in such a manner that this hand-bag remains entirely withinthe frame and so forms the outer side or bottom of the vanity-case.

In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the sheet cut out the bottom of the vanity-case forms the outer side or face of the hand-bag,

which latter is entirely lodged into the vanity case and has its outer face flush with the outer face or bottom of the vanity -case.

Therefore in this invention, there is no question of sticking or assembling a hand-bag on one side of the vanity case, but of replacing that side by a hand-bag set or fixed in the setting of the vanity case of which it forms an integral part,

just as much as the internal setting containing the compartments of-the vanity case.

I is the usual lid of the vanity-case and 2 its body. An armature or second body 2 is fixed in this first body 2, so as to be tightly held, said ar- 30 mature being also of box form with various fixed or removable compartments 4-4, provided with lids and which serve to receive the beauty accessories: powder, cream, cold-cream etc., and even tually cigarettes and lighter. The body 3 is 25 slightly higher than the body 2 so as to project out of the latter to receive and clamp the lid, the inside of which is for instance a looking-glass.

The body 3 is prevented from coming out, on the one hand through the tightening action of 30 the vertical sides of the body 2 and on the other hand by means of projections such as 5 which may be resilient (springs).- r

The assemblage can further be strengthened by means of the clasp or closing device of a 36 known kind provided with a spring, one part I of which is engaged in the body 3, whilst the operating bracket 1 passes through a slit 8 in one of the vertical sides of the body 2. Of course any other kind of closing device can be used, such as 40 for instance, one which would only affect lid l and body 2.

The vanity case as described up to now, is exactly like those on the market and the lid and sides may be provided with any desired and usual 46 decoration. The body 2 and its lid or even the lid alone could of course be made of metal, precious wood or ivory, synthetic resin (bakelite) etc.

According to the invention, the bottom of body 50 2 is removed, leaving only a frame 9 which will support body 3. The hand-bag it which in the example is a fiat bag with only one expanding bellows, with closing flap II and clasp I2, is chosen of the same size as the frame 9. The ll back of the bag is sewn or otherwise fixed in an irremovable manner to a sheet of fabric or texture II which is fixed on a rigid plate It, for instance a metal plate.

Said plate has the same size (length and width) as the body I. I

The sheet of fabric ll may be stuck on plate I4, and preferably this sheet is turned over on to the top side of the plate.

The plate I4 is forced in the body 2, with the hand-bag underneath; the body 3 is then placed on this plate I4 and the whole is thus fitted up, the hand-bag Ill being absolutely prevented from coming out, thanks to frame 9 and body 3 tightly fixed in the box or case 2. Of course plate H can be .permanently joined to body I, forming bottom thereof. It will be understood that the bag [0 could be fixed in the lid in exactly the same manner, by setting or fixing the supporting plate H in the lid between a frame III to be formed therein and the internal looking-glass.

For large vanity cases, two hand-bags may be provided on the same side, carried by the same plate set or fixed in one of the sides of the box or case.

It will be understood that the hand-bag l0 may be of any desired material, matched as regards colors and design to the vanity-case or on the contrary in opposition thereto. The bag may be of the flat (portfolio) type, the visible side of which can be connected by the closing device to the back of the bag, said side being for instance realized by means of the side of the case which has been cut out or by a sheet similar to the lid r of the, vanity case.

In this way it will be possible to insert the body of the bag in the vanity case itself, so as to obtain a whole which presents on its two sides, the appearance of a vanity case.

Thus in Figure 5, the frame 9 formed in the bottom of the vanity case is provided inside with another frame 9' on which rests the handbag support It.

The bellows Iii of the hand-bag entirely enters in the double frame 9-! and the metallic sheet ll cut out in the bottom of the case forms one side of the bag. This sheet is hinged at ill on frame 9 and can be closed in the frame by a spring knob or similar device l9.

The hand-bag closing device may be located in opposition to the vanity case closing device, as in the example described, or what is more logical,-on the same side. In the figured position of the hand-bag, a lid for the vanity case may be provided pivotally mounted on one of its small sides.

The whole, instead of being rectangular, as

shown, could also be of round or oval form, with for instance a chain for carrying purposes, the hand-bag thus acting as a "purse or chatelaine".

In a general manner, the invention comprises all flat forms and all materials and decorations, as well for the vanity case as for the hand-bag M, which may be round or oval for a square vanity-case, as long as the combination "vanitycase" and hand-bag, falls within thescope of the appended claims.

Having now fully described my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A portable toilet outfit termed a vanity case, comprising a rigid body for containing toilet articles and the like, and provided with a lid, the said body having a portion of its bottom removed to form a frame, a hand bag support in the frame, and a hand bag secured to the sup port and forming the outer exposed portion of the said case.

2. A portable toilet outfit termed a vanity case, comprising a rigid body for containing toilet articles and the like, and provided with a lid, the said body having a portion of its bottom removed ,to form a frame, a plate in the opening formed place, and a hand bag secured to said sheet and forming the external surface of the case.

3. A portable toilet outfit termed a vanity case, comprising a rigid body for containing toilet articles and the like, and provided with a lid, the said body having a portion of its bottom removed to form a frame, a plate in the opening formed by the removal of the bottom supported by said frame, a sheet of fabric on the outer surface of the plate having its edges folded over the edges of the plate whereby the fabric is secured in place, a tray-like body in the first mentioned body engaging the inwardly folded edges of the fabric, and a hand bag secured to said sheet and forming the external surface of the case.
