LINING FOR TIES Filed April 29, 1957 Patented July 19, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 6 Claims.

This invention relates to'neck ties of the fourin-hand type and more particularly to thelinings thereof.

The main object of this invention is to provide a lining that, upon being correctly adiusted,

produces a desirable drape effect in the tie.

Another object is to provide a lining of woven textile material cut on a bias so as to be suiliciently elastic to regain its normal condition after being subjected to stress.

A further object is to produce a tie lining provided with means whereby, upon being stressed, it will have a longitudinally corrugated effect that will continue so long as the tie is knotted.

These objects are obtained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the annexed drawing, constituting a material part of this disclosure, and in which:

Figure 1 is a rear elevational view of an embodiment of the invention in its normal unstressed condition.

Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the same.

Figure 3 is a rear elevational view, similar to Figure 1, but showing the lining as under stress.

Figure 4 is an edge view of the same.

The device is extremely simple i character, and as will be seen in the drawin consists of as buckram, cut on a bias, that is so that the threads extend diagonally.

The upper portion 26 of the lining is of such width as to conform to the shape of the tie body, in which it is eventually enclosed, and tapers outwardly at its edges towards its lower, wider end portion 21. I

A stout strand as a thread or cord 30 is held by a knot 3| .in the upper portion, centrally of the blank 25, passed loosely through the fabric, as at 32, and then continued centrally downward to a point 33 where it diverges, as at 34, and passed again through the blank.

Here the strand is formed into a flat loop 35 and continued upwardly, as at 36, to the point 33 where it is joined to the branch at 33.

It will now be manifest that if the lining be fixed at its ends to the enveloping tie material, and a pull exerted on the lower end of the tie, the strand will be tensioned, causing the catenary 35 of the loop to shorten and transmit a strain on the lining at that point, which is thus buckled or forced outwardly, forming a protuberance 31 on the material at one side and a corresponding depression at the other side, at its center and thus producing a desired drape effect of the tie a single piece 25 of loosely woven fabric, suchwhich follows the sinuousity of its lining and is held in such position upon knotting the tie, theknot being made Just above the point 33.

It is to be noted that such lining may be fitted to any ordinary type of tie having long ends, 5 that the device is purely mechanical, and that the effect produced is that of a drape.

Having thus described the invention and set forth the manner of its construction and application, what is claimed as new and sought to secure by Letters Patent, is:-

1. A tie comprising a lining blank cut on the bias to become enclosed within the larger wing of a four-in-hand tie, and means associated with said blank whereby the central portion of the tie may be forced inwardly when said lining is stressed, said tie when knotted retaining the shape given it by said lining.

2. A tie comprising an elastic lining blank, a cord anchored at one end in the upper portion of the blank and having a loop arranged transversely in said blank, the catenary of said loop being passed freely through the center of the blank remote from the point of anchorage.

3. A tie comprising an elastic lining blank and means combined therewith whereby the central portion of the tie is contracted laterally at its central portion when said lining is under longitudinal stress.

4. A tie comprising a lining blank cut on the bias to become enclosed within the larger wing of a four-in-hand tie, and a cord anchored at its ends in said fabric, said cord having a transversely extending loop adapted to draw the edges of said blank towards its median line andcorrespondingly depress the blank ,at its central portion.

5. In a'necktie of the four-in-hand type, an elastic lining enveloped and secured at its ends therewithin, an inelastic strand loosely stitched 40 in said lining to present a loop having a straight catenary disposed transversely the lower portion of said lining and its side elements fixed at their extremities to the lining at a point beyond the location of the tie knot.

6. In a necktie of the four-in-hand type, an elastic lining enveloped and secured at its ends therewithin, an inelastic strand loosely confined to said lining presenting a straight portion extending between the marginal side edges of the lining, and side portions extending therefrom and fixed at a point beyond the location of a knot to be formed in the tie, said side portions stressed in adjusting the tie whereby a central depression is formed in the tie below the knot.
