This invention relates to a necktie knot forming device, and more particularly to a pin device for use in tying the knot of a four-in-hand tie.

It is well known that many persons experience diificulty in tying the knot of a four-in-hand tie properly. Various forms and devices have heretofore been proposed to effect the formation of the knot. These devices, in general, are subject to the objections that they constitute a part of or remain in the knot when tied thus giving it a bulky and rather stiff, ungainly, appearance; that they cause excessive Wear of the fabric; that they require that the knot always be formed at the same place in the tie with a resultant decrease in the serviceable life of the tie; and that they are cumbersome and inconvenient to use and manipulate.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and easily manipulated device for forming the knot of a four-in-hand necktie and properly draping the hanging portion of the tie so as to produce a fold or cleft therein immediately below the knot and symmetrically arranged with respect thereto, thereby giving the tie a neat and attractive appearance when tied.

Another object is to provide a device that is readily detachable from the tie, and that can be easily and conveniently removed therefrom after the knot has been formed without disarranging the knot or disturbing the finished appearance of l the tie.

A still further object is to provide a device of this character that can be used repeatedly Without wrinkling the tie or causing undue wear of its fabric.

These, as well as other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description thereof.

Some materials used in making four-in-hand ties do not readily lend themselves to forming properly shaped knots. However, with the use of my pin device a well-formed knot can be easily constructed with a tie of any material.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a view of a four-in-hand tie in one stage of the process of forming the knot structure and showing the pin device positioned in the Fig. 2 is a front view of the knotted tie with the pin device removed;

Fig. 3 is a perspective View of one form of the pin device; and,

Fig. 4 is a similar view of a modified form.

The device comprises a relatively short metal pin it having a pointed end H and a head or blunt end l2, which latter may be provided with an eye or the like. Fastened to the blunt end is a flexible member it. This member may be made of a length of string, wire, chain, or the like. The free end of said flexible member is preferably provided with a knob or ball M, of plastic metal, rubber, or other material. The knob or ball serves as a handle or grip for convenience in withdrawing the pin from the knot when tied.

In forming a knot withthe use of my pin device, the portion is of the tie it, that is the portion which is passed through the loop ii in making the knot, is first doubled over, face to face, as shown in Fig. 1, so that its edges lB-lt will fall substantially one on the other. While so folded, the pin is inserted into the folded parts, through the back of the tie, so as to fasten them together temporarily. The wider end or tab it of the tie, together with the flexible member it, are then drawn through the loop. The pin it remains in the tie while the knot is formed. Because of the fact that the tie-portion it is in its folded condition during formation of the knot the latter will thereby be supported in proper shape. After the knot has been formed, the pin is Withdrawn by grasping the handle it, which when the knot is formed hangs down below the knot, and the pin is then easily pulled out of the tie thus leaving a well-defined fold or cleft 2B in the tab of the tie immediately below the knot. On referring to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the fold or cleft is substantially centered with respect to the knot and thereby gives the tie a neat and attractive appearance.

The pin element it of the modified form of the device illustrated in Fig. 4 is provided with an elongated handle member 2! instead of with a flexible member as in the form previously described.

It will be understood that various modifications in the details of construction herein shown and described may be made within the scope of the invention.

What I claim is:

1. In a necktie knot former, the combination with a tie of the four-in-hand type, of a pin element detachably engaging a doubled-over portion of the tie that passes through the knot in forming the same, and a handle member extending from the pin element to a point below the knot to withdraw the pin element from the tie after the knot has been formed.

2. In a necktie knot former, the combination with a tie of the four-in-hand type, of a pin and hanging loosely below the knot to withdraw 5 the pin element from the tie after the knot has been formed.
