Description
June 28, M BECHIK MATTRESS AND CUSHION HANDLE Filed Dec. 22, 1937 dill/CW 366M A TTORNEYS.
Patented June 28, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 8 Claims.
My invention relates to an improvement in mattress and cushion handles, wherein it is desired to provide a simple handle which may be made at an extremely low cost and which will operate as effectively as virtually any type of handle.
Various types of mattress handles have previously been constructed. In most of these, the reinforcing bar was within the mattress, and a flexible handle was positioned outside. Former handles with which I am familiar have comprised more pieces to be assembled. If ventilators have been used, the securing grommet has been provided with a screen, raising the cost of these grommets.
It is the purpose of the present invention to provide a flat handle of an economical structure, with rounded, smooth, reinforced edges, which has the securing means integrally connected therewith, so that the handle may be economically attached to the mattress wall and firmly secured in place. By such construction, the necessity of passing the handle through the mattress wall and anchoring the same is obviated, and as the grommet or securing means is integral with the handle, these elements need not be handled separately. Only a riveting tool is necessary to attach the handle.
It is a purpose of the present invention to pro- ,vide a handle whichrequires no continuous reinforcing bar on the inside of the mattress wall, as the handle itself is rigid. Therefore, it is necessary only to provide washers or the like, on the inside of the mattress wall to which the handle may be attached.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a handle which may be stamped out of lightweight material and which may be secured to grommets or the like, in a novel manner so that the completed handle may be assembled at a minimum of cost. In the preferred form, the edges of the handle are marginally folded inwardly, providing a, handle with rounded edges. The inwardly folded edges of the handle are designed to engage the flange of a grommet at each end of the handle, so that the grommet end and handle are integrally secured together. The handle thus formed may be easily attached in the formation of the mattress, by passing the grommet through the mattress wall and through a suitable reinforcing washer and riveting the end of the grommet over the washer.
It is a further feature of my invention to attach the grommet to the handle along the rear surface of the handle and to form one or more openings in alinement with the grommet to provide ventilating openings through the mattress Wall in a simple and effective manner. While it is understood that ventilating means have been previously formed in combination with matrress handles, this type of ventilator construction is believed entirely novel.
These and other objects and novel features of my invention will be more clearly and fully set forth in the following specification and claims.
In the drawing forming part of this specification:
Figure l is a perspective view of my handle attached to a mattress wall.
Figure 2 is an elevational View of my mattress handle before the same is attached to the mattress wall.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the handle described in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an elevational view of the rear side of the handle illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view through the center of my handle after attachment to a mattress wall.
Figure 6 is a slightly different form of con- 2 struction in which a single aperture is provided in lieu of a series of apertures for ventilating purposes.
Figure '7 illustrates a construction in which the end of the handle is crimped over the inclosed grommet.
Figure 8 is a cross-sectional view through a type of construction in which the grommet is brazed or otherwise integrally attached to the handle.
The handle A is preferably formed with a 3 central hand engaging portion l0 attached to the ends I l which extend along a substantially parallel plane by means of offset connecting portions 12. The handle A comprises a flat outer surface having side flanges l3 which are bent substantially parallel the outer flat surface to provide inwardly opposed flanges M. In other words, the handle portion I0 is provided with substantially flat or slightly rounded inner and outer surfaces connected by rounded edges. The ends 4 of the handle are flattened together as illustrated in Figures 3 and 5 of the drawing, the opposed flanges l4 engaging beneath the flanged edge I5 of a grommet 16. As may be seen in Figure 4 of the drawing, the opposed flanges M are notched as indicated at I! to engage about the hollow tubular shank 19 of the grommet 16.
These notches ll hold the grommet l6 from movement either longitudinally or transversely with respect to the handle ends I l and the flanges I4 clamp the grommet flange l5 tightly against the outer surface of the handle.
Openings 520 are formed through the outer surface of the handle in alinement with the shank [9 of the grommet l6 to provide ventilating openings which coincide with the grommet. Ventilating openings which lead through the mattress wall are in this way provided. i
When the handle A is attached to the mattress wall B the grommets l5 are forced through the wall B .and through a reinforcing plate or washer 2L; The extreme end 22 of the shank IQ of each grommet I6 is then riveted over as illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawing, holding the handle secured rigidly to the wall B of the inattress.
In Figure 6 the construction of the handle C is identical with that of the: handleQA, with the exception that a single opening 23 is formed through the outer surface of the handle in alinement with the grommet 24. The. grommet 24 is clamped by inturned flanges 25 which are identical to the flanges which clamp the grornmet l6 in position. i
In Figure 7 of the drawing I illustrate a slightlydiflerent form of handle D. In this form, the body 26 of the handle is provided with inturned edge flanges 21 which are notched at 29 to engage about'the shank 3|] of the grommet 3|. The flanges 2T' in this form of construction continue about the' end 32 of the body 26, providing an inturned flange 33 which is virtually a continuation of the flanges 21 and which fold over the flange 34 of the grommet 3| to hold the same tightly secured to the handle D. This type of construction has the advantage of providing a folded edge along the end 32 of the handle.
InFigure 8 of the drawing, I provide a handle E, similar to any of those previously described, with the exception that the edge flanges 35 on the body 36 do not extend over the flange 31 of the grommet 39. In this form, the grommet 39 is welded or brazed or otherwise integrally secured to the under or inner surface of the handle in alinement with perforations or openings 40, providing ventilation for the inside of the mattress. The manner in which thehandles which have been described are attached to a mattresshas been stated in connection with the description of the handle A. In each case, the shank of the grommet extends through the wall of the mattress and through a reinforcing plate'on the inside of the mattress wall and'is then riveted firmly in position. I The handles are applied during the formation of the mattress when both surfaces of the mattress wall are readily accessible. In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described the principles of'construction of my handle, and while I have endeavored to set forth the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that this is only illustrative of a meansof carrying out my invention and that obvious changes may be made within the scope of the following claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
