FORM HANGER FOR CONCRETE SLAB STRUCTURES Filed Aug. 23, 1937 2-Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented June 28, 1938 UNITED STATES FFICE PATET FORM HANGER FOR CONCRETE SLAB STRUCTURES 9 Claims.
This invention relates to hangers for suspending the temporary forms used in the construction of concrete slabs such as decks, floors, ceilings, and the like.
In such constructions, the concrete slab is usually supported by a plurality of horizontal permanent girders, beams, or joists which may be I-beams or other structural steel shapes. The temporary forms span the spaces between the permanent beams and are suspended by hangers which embrace the beams.
The main objects of this invention are to provide a hanger for slab forms having an improved yoke adapted for mounting on top of the beam and having improved Suspenders coupled to the yoke and adapted to support the temporary forms; to provide improved supporting and spacing chairs for supporting the yoke and for spacing it from the top of the beam; to provide improved means for coupling the Suspenders to the yoke so as to permit the Suspenders to be removed from the embedded yoke after the concrete has set whereby the Suspenders may be used over and over again; and to provide an improved hanger of this kind which is sturdy and which may be quickly and accurately assembled and applied even by unskilled labor.
Illustrative embodiments of this invention are shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a building structure showing one of the improved hangers;
Figure 2 is a perspective of the yoke part of the hanger shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional detail of a hanger and building structure showing a modified form of support and spacer for the yoke;
Figure 4 is an enlarged section of the yoke and spacer, the view being taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a perspective of the yoke and spacers shown in Figures 3 and 4;
Figure 6 is a horizontal section taken on the line 6 6 of Figure 5;
Figure '7 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing an adjustable yoke for accommodating beams of different widths;
Figure 8 is a perspective of the adjustable yoke shown in Figure 7; and
Figure 9 is a perspective of one end of the adjustable yoke shown in Figure 8 and its attached supporting and spacing leg.
In the construction herein shown, the improved hangers are used in connection with the construction of a concrete deck, iloor, or cei1 ing l which is supported on a plurality of joists, beams, or girders 2, only one of which is shown herein. These horizontal beams are usually arranged in substantially parallel spaced relation, and the spaces between the horizontal beams are spanned by the temporary forms which are suspended from thev beams by the improved hangers.
In the construction herein shown, the temporary forms comprise the usual decking 3 supported on horizontal joists 4 which are arranged in substantially parallel spaced relation and which are in turn supported by a plurality of pairs of stringers 5. The strngers of each pair are spaced apart so as to provide openings 6 through which the Suspenders of the improved hangers extend. Y
In the construction shown in Figure 1, each of the improved hangers comprises a supporting yoke l supported on top of the beam and couu pled at its ends to a pair of depending suspenders 8 which support the forms.-
In the constructions shown in Figures 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6, the yoke is not adjustable and comprises a single bar which is preferably round in cross-section and may be of any desired gauge which is sufficiently strong for the work involved. The yoke bar is substantially U-shaped so as to provide depending arms 9 whichare externally threaded. These yokes are left embedded in the concrete deck after the concrete has set and, therefore, it is necessary to provide supporting and spacing means for raising the yokes above the lower surface of the deck. In
the construction sho-wn in Figures 1 and 2, such l f supporting and spacing means comprises a pair of legs i0 which are preferably sheet metal stampings bent to substantially V-shape and being slightly longer than the depending arms 9 so as to raise the lower extremities of thc=I arms 9 above the plane of the lower face of the deck. As shown in Figure 2, the upper ends of the'V-shaped legs il] are bent outwardly away from each other so as to provide flanges II- and I2. The flanges H are apertured so as to provide openings I3 through which the ends 9 of the yoke extend. The flanges I2 are permanently secured to the yoke bar by spot welding as shown at lll or by other suitable means.
In the construction shown in Figures 3, 4, 5 and 6, the supporting and spacing leg comprises a sheet metal stamping l5 of substantially inverted U-shape having strengthening ribs I6 in the leg portions thereof and having a depression Il in the cross portion thereof forming a seatr` for the yoke bar. The yoke bar may be Spot welded to the legs I5 as shown at I8.
In the construction shown in Figures 7 and 8, the yoke portion of the hanger is adjustable widthwise so as to be adapted for use in connection with structural shapes of different widths. The adjustable yoke comprises a comparatively long bar I9 and a relatively short bar 20, the ends of which are bent to form arms 2| and 22, respectively, which are externally threaded similar to the arms 9. Attached to the outer end of the bar I8 is a supporting and spacing leg 23 which may be Similar in construction to the legs I0 or, if desired, may be similar in construction to the legs I5. The other leg of the adjustable yoke serves not only as a supporting and spacing leg but also serves as a coupling for slidably connecting the bars I9 and 20 together. As Shown in Figures 7, 8 and 9, this coupling comprises a substantially V-Shape-d Sheet metal stamping 24 having a pair of openings 25 formed therein for slidably receiving the bar I9 and having a pair of openings 25 formed therein for receiving the short bar 2G. Struck out from the leg 24 adjacent the openings 25, are lugs 2l which are Spot welded or otherwise rigidly secured to the bar 20. With this improved construction, the yoke may be adjusted as to width by merely sliding the leg 24 on the bar I 9.
Each of the Suspenders 8 is preferably of Substantially the Same construction as the tie element Shown in my Patent No. 2,061,751, issued November 24, 1936, and in my copending application, Serial No. 151,582, led July 2, 1937. It comprises a bolt having a tapered head 28 and a iiat shank 2S. The tapered head 28 extends through an opening 3&1 in the decking 3 and has an internally threaded socket 3| for engagement with the threaded ends of the yoke. The shank 29 is of rectangular cross-section with threads 32 formed on only two of the opposed Sides thereof. With this type of construction, a wrench may be easily applied to the at sides of the shank without injury to the threads. Engaging the threaded portions of the Shanks 29 are wing nuts 33 having bearing portions 34 for engaging the lower faces of the Stringers 5.
In operation, the Suspenders are coupled to the yoke, and the yoke is then placed on top of the beam with the Suspenders depending therefrom. The entire weight of the forms iS carried by the wing nuts 33, and these wing nuts may be readily adjusted for bringing the upper surface of the decking 3 to the required level which may be either above, below, or in the plane of the upper surface of the beam.
-In dismantling the forms after the concrete has Set, the wing nuts 33 are removed so as to permit dropping of the form parts, and the suspenders 8 are then unscrewed from the threaded ends of the yokes. The holes left in the bo-ttom face of the concrete after the removal of the Suspenders 8 may be readily plugged with concrete. The yokes remain permanently embedded in the concrete.
Although but certain specic embodiments of this invention have been herein Shown and described, it will be understood that details of the constructions shown may be altered without departing from the spirit of the invention .as defined by the following claims:-
