' 5 Claims. (01. 2041),
This invention relates to a device for securing a removable head to a barrel. v One of the objects of the in'vention is-to provide a deviceof this character which isso-constituted and organized that it maybe conven iently applied and releasedand yet is of simplegddrable andcompact construction; In carrying out "the present invention; an=op-'- expanding the ringand has combined therewith the crank handle in such a novel manner. that the handle may be conveniently used after the manner of ahigh speed wrench to cause the screw to contractor expand the ring; When not in use the handle may be compactly foldedagainst tain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particu- I larly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,
forming a part of this specification, and in which;
Figure 1 is a view in top plan showing a head equipped with a closure device embodying the 7 present invention; and."
tween the flange structure 4 and the rolled bead 2.
The head is fastened in position to close and hermetically seal the open end of the barrel by means of a split clamping ring 6. This ring is constructed of resilient sheet metal of ap--' I propriate gauge and it is of channel orconcave form sothat when it is'applied its upper portion 1 bears downon the flange structure 4 of the head and its lower portion 8 engages under therolled bead 2. U I
Adjacent its ends the ring 6 is provided with inwardly extending apertured lugs 9 and I0 which in the upper wall thereof.
overlie the cupped portion of the head 3. An operating screw II is provided and has the threaded portion of its shank interengagedwith internal threads provided in the lug 9. The screw also has a smooth portion of its shankextending through a smooth opening provided therefor in the lug 10. This screw is constrained against axial movement relative to the lug 9 by means of a collar l2'fixed thereto and engaging one side of the lug In and its head 13 which is also" fixed to the shank and engages the other side In other words, the screw is of the lug l0. threadedly connected with the lug 9 and is swiveled to the lug I0.
Anoperating handle I5 is provided and is in the form of a crank having a suitable hand grip l6 at one end and having its other end permanently connected by a universal joint designated at I! to the head of the screw H. The universal joint l1 comprises a part l8 secured to one end of the crank handle and straddling and pivotally connected as at IE to a second part 20 which, in turn, is pivotally connected to'the bifurcated head l3 of the screw II. The pivotal connection between the part 20 and the head I3 is at right angles to the pivot I9.
For the purpose of releasably securing the a handle 15 in position close up against and parallel to the head 3 during shipment and storage, a keeper 25 is integrally formed or rigidly secured to an intermediate portion of the ring 6. This keeper presents an inwardly and horizontally opening socket andis so positioned that this socket receives the curved portion I6 of the handle l5. The handle I5 is releasably-retained in the keeper 25 by means of a suitable pin 26 whichhas its head 21 resting on the lower wall of the keep- 7 er and its shank extending-up through an opening from the keeper the portion of the pin 26 which projects above the keeper must be grasped and To release the handle Q the pin pulled upwardly until its head is received in the counter-sink 28 provided therefor in the upper wall of the keeper at which time the crank handle may be swung out of the keeper and then 5 raised to a position where it may be conveniently operated to tighten up or release the screw.
While I have shown and described one conious'changes in the size, shape and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
The invention claimed is:
1. A device for securing a removable head to a barrel comprising a split clamping ring, lugs secured to end portions of the ring and projecting inwardly over the barrel, an operating screw swiveled to one of the lugs and threadedly interconnected with the other, a crank handle, and a universal joint permanently connecting one end of the crank handle to the screw.
2. A device for securing a removable head to a barrel comprising a split clamping ring, lugs secured to end portions of the ring and projecting inwardly over the barrel, an operating screw swiveled to one of the lugs and threadedly interconnected with the other, a crank handle, a universal joint permanently connecting one end of the crank handle to the screw, said crank handle being foldable to a position parallel to the head when not in use, and a keeper engageable with the crank handle to hold it in folded position.
3. A device for securing a removable head to a barrel comprising a split clamping ring, lugs secured to end portions of the ring and projecting inwardly over the barrel, an operating screw swiveled to one of the lugs and threadedly interconnected with the other, a crank handle, a universal joint permanently connecting one end of the crank handle to the screw, said crank handle being foldable to a position parallel to the head when not in use, a keeper engageable with the crank handle to hold it in folded position, said keeper presenting an inwardly opening socket and being positioned to engage a curved portion of the crank handle, and releasable means for retaining the crank handle in the keeper.
4. A device for securing a removable head to a barrel comprising a split clamping ring, screw means cooperable with end portions of the ring for expanding and contracting the same and a crank handle having a universal connection with the screw means and manipulated to operate the 7 same, said crank handle also being foldable to a position within the confines of the barrel, and means forreleasably retaining the handle in its folded position. l
, 5. A device for securing a removable head to a barrel comprising a split clamping ring, a screw interconnected with the end portions of the ring and operable whenturned to expand and. contract the ring depending upon the direction in which the screw is turned, an operating handle, and a universal joint between the handle and one end of the screw to positively and permanently interconnect the handle and screw, and also to provide for folding of the handle to an inoperative, position within the confines of the barrel.
