The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in check book holders and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising a blotter which is so arranged that the entire check, including the stub, after it is written may be conveniently blotted.

Another very important object of the invention is to provide a check book holder of the aforementioned character embodying novel means for securing a blotter therein in such a manner as to permit said blotter to be readily removed for replacement when desired.

Still another very important object of the invention is to provide a check book holder of the character described comprising a blotter which is so arranged that, when said blotter is in use, the entire area of the back thereof, which may have printed thereon advertising and other matter, will be clearly exposed to View.

Other objects of the invention are to provide a check book holder of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight, attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured at low cost.

All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts through the several views, and wherein:

Figure l is a top plan view of the invention showing same in open position with a check ready to be written.

Figure 2 is a view in side elevation thereof.

Figure 3 is a top plan view, showing the blotter in position for use.

Figure 4 is a view in vertical longitudinal section through an end portion of the invention, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.

Figure 5 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig 1.

Figure 6 is a detail view in perspective of. a blotter which is adapted to be used with the holder.

Figure 7 is a detail view in perspective of the pocket which receives the blotter, showing same partially broken away and before it is attached to the check book holder.

Figure 8 is a perspective view of an end portion of the holder, showing a slight modification.

Figure 9 is a perspective view of an end portion of a blotter which is adapted to be used with the modification shown in Fig. 8.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral I designates an elongated sheet or strip of suitable flexible material which is adapted to be folded transversely on itself at an intermediate point, as at 2. The flexible sheet or strip I constitutes a cover for a check book, as at 3, and said cover has secured to its inner side a lining 4 which may also be of any suitable flexible material. One end of the cover I has formed therein 'a pocket for slidably receiving a stud 5 on the back of the check book 3, as best seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings. At its other end, the cover I terminates in a closure flap 6 which, when the holder is in folded position, is adapted tobe folded, as at I, over the other end of said holder, said closure fiapbeing releasably secured in closed position by snap fastener elements 8.

The reference numeral 9 designates a pocket in the form of a substantially flat ring of. suitable flexible material which is secured for swinging movement in the cover I at substantially the point 7 where the closure flap 6 swings on said cover I.. As illustrated to advantage in Fig. 4 of the drawings, one end portion of. the pocket 9 is pressed together and folded under the adjacent end of the lining 4 and secured in any suitable manner, as by cementing or gluing. Of course, the closure flap 6 is adapted to be folded over the pocket 9. p

The pocket 9 is for the reception of one end portion of a removable blotter ill. The end portion of the blotter I0 which is inserted in the pocket 9 has formed therein openings II which accommodate separable fastener elements I2 which are mounted on the opposed walls of said pocket 9 for releasably anchoring said blotter therein. The blotter I0 is adapted to be readily folded transversely on itself on an intermediate point, as at I3. Any desired advertising or other matter may be printed on substantially the entire area of the back of the blotter Ill.

It is thought that the manner of using the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. The checks comprising the book 3 are adapted to be readily folded at an intermediate point which coincides substantially with the fold lines 2 and I3 of the cover I and blotter I0, respectively. When a check is to be written, the holder is opened and, together with the check book 3 laid out as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. With the holder and check boo-k thus laid out, and while the check is being written, the blotter I0 is still in folded position. After the check has been drawn the free end portion of the blotter I0 is grasped and said blotter is withdrawn from under the checkbook 3 and laid on the check which has just been drawn and pressed thereagainst. This is shown to advantage in Fig. 3 of the drawings and it will be observed that the blotter I0 is of sufficient length to blot the body of the check and the stub l4 thereof in one operation. It will also be noted when the blotter I0 is in this position the entire area of the back thereof may come under the observation of the user. After the check has been blotted it is, of course, detached from the book 3. To return the holder to the pocket, the blotter I0 is folded on the line L3 under the free end portions of the checks comprising the book 3, after which the holder may be conveniently folded with the checks therein and the closure flap 6 secured in closed position.

In the modification shown in Figs. 8 and 9 of the drawings the snap fastener elements I2 are dispensed with in the pocket 9 and a spring ill of any suitable resilient metal is secured in any suitable manner in the mouth portion of said pocket. The spring I5 is in the form of a substantially flat loop having formed thereon anchoring teeth IS. The teeth I6 are adapted to bite into or imbed themselves in one end portion of a blotter I! when said blotter is inserted in the pocket 9. It will be observed that the openings II in the blotter II) are omitted from the blotter [1. Otherwise, the blotter I1 is substantially similar to the blotter ID.

It will thus be seen that a check book holder comprising a conveniently accessible blotter has been provided wherein said blotter may be conveniently removed for replacement when desired. To remove the blotter Ill it is, of course, only necessary to separate the fastener elements l2 after which said blotter may readily be withdrawn from the pocket 9 and a new one inserted.

To remove the blotter I! for replacement, it is only necessary to spread or open the resilient loop I5 sufiiciently to withdraw the teeth It from said blotter H. The pocket 9 is connected for swinging movementto the cover I to facilitate folding and unfolding the blotter. It will be observed that the end portion of the lining 4 which is adjacent the closure flap 6 is free of the cover to accommodate the closed end of the pocket 9 therebeneath. This is also shown to advantage in Fig. 4 of the drawings.

It'is believed that the many advantages of a check book holder constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although preferred embodiments of the'invention are as illustrated and described, it is to 'be understood that further modifications and changes in details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed is:--

1. A check book holder comprising a foldable cover, means on one end of said cover for securing a check book therein, a pocket of flexible material secured for swinging movement to the other end portion of the cover, said pocket being therein.

adapted for the reception of an end portion of a blotter, and means in the pocket for detachably anchoring the blotter therein.

2. A check book holder comprising a foldable cover, means on one end of said cover for securing a check book therein, a pocket of flexible material secured for swinging movement to the other end portion of the cover, said pocket being adapted for the reception of an end portion of a blotter, and means in the pocket for detachably anchoring the blotter therein, the last named means including separable fasteners mounted on :opposed walls of the pocket and adapted for insertion through the blotter.

3. A check book holder of the class described comprising a foldable cover, means on one end portion of said cover for securing a check book therein, a closure flap on the other end of the cover, a lining secured to the cover, one end portion of the lining being free of the cover adjacent the closure flap, a pocket of flexible material secured to the cover adjacent the closure flap, one end portion of said pocket being folded and secured under the free end portion of the lining for mounting said pocket in position for swinging movement, a foldable blotter having openings inone end portion, said one end portion of the blotter being insertable in the pocket, and separable fastener elements mounted in the pocket and engageable with each other through the openings by releasably securing the blotter in the pocket.

4. A check book holder comprising a cover, means for securing a check book in the cover, a pocket for the reception of a blotter, mounted on the cover, a substantially flat, resilient loop mounted in the mouth portion of the pocket, and. teeth on said loop engageable in said blotter for detachably anchoring said blotter in the pocket.

5. A check book holder comprising a foldable cover, means on one end portion of said cover for securing a check book therein, a flexible pocket mounted for swinging movement on the other end portion of the cover, said pocket for the reception of an end portion of a blotter, a substantially flat, resilient loop mounted in the mouth portion of the pocket, and teeth on said loop engageable in the blotter for detachably anchoring said-blotter in the pocket.

6. In combination, a cover, blotter holder meanssecured for swinging movement to one end portionof the cover, said holding means being adapted for the reception of the end portion of a blotter, and means in said holding means for detachably anchoring a blotter therein.

'7. In combination, a cover, a lining secured to the cover, one end portion of the lining being free from the cover, blotter holding means, one end portion-of'said blotter holding means being secured under the free end portion of the lining for mounting said blotter holding means in position for swinging movement, a blotter having one end portion removably arranged in said blotter holding-means, and means in said blotter holding means for detachably anchoring the blotter PAUL C.
