Description

May 31, 1938. w. A. KERR ET AL GRINDING WHEEL Filed March 29, 1937 I mama? R a 177 @ruZZa ATTORN EV Patented May 31, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GRINDING WHEEL Application March 29, 1937, Serial No. 133,730
1 Claim.
The invention relates to a banded wheel and more especially to a grinding and polishing wheel.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a Wheel of this character, wherein at the periphery thereof is provided a slot or notch for accommodating a wedging key and additionally a locking key so that grinding material with cloth base or strip emery or sand paper can be fastened about the periphery of the wheel for its use in grinding and polishing without liability of the emery or sanding paper becoming detached or loose and also maintaining circular peripheral formation to the wheel.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a Wheel of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and effective in its operation, strong, durable, enabling quick changing of the emery or sand paper, and inexpensive to manufacture. 4
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is an elevation of the wheel constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows. Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the wheel comprises a disk-like body It) preferably made from metal having a central laterally extended hub ll while at the periphery of the body I0 is a laterally extending annular rim 12.
The body Ill has formed on the face confronted by the rim l2 diametrically opposed enlargements l3 and M, respectively. The enlargement I 3 is provided with an inwardly tapered substantially V-shaped socket or recess I5 which opens laterally through the enlargement |3 at the outer side thereof but is closed at the opposite side by a thin wall portion [6 of the disk body It, being also open through the rim l2. This recess IE5 at its inner end communicates with a circular hole Ill and one face being serrated or toothed at E8. Adapted to be trained about the rim I2 is a grinding material with cloth base or strip sand or emery paper l9, its ends 20 being carried into the recess I5 which latter is adapted to accommodate a wedge-shaped key 2i which is driven thereinto for the fastening of the ends 2i! within this recess and in this manner the strip or band i9 is held tight peripherally of the wheel.
Formed next to the recess 85 in the enlargement I3 is a transverse tapered socket 22 for accommodating a tapered locking pin '23 which engages one end I5 of the strip or band 59, the socket 22 being partially open to the recess i5 and thus in this manner the ends 251 of the strip or band l9 will be doubly secured as the pin 23 will serve to lock the key 20 in the recess while the latter and the said pin will make secure the ends 20 of the band or strip. 7
The banded wheel is adaptable for grinding and polishing purposes.
The wheels may be covered with suitable cloth underlying the grinding material or strip if found desirable.
The keys 2! and 23 are made preferably from soft wood although they may be made from any other suitable material.
What is claimed is:
A wheel of the kind described comprising an annular rim formed at its outer periphery and having an inwardly tapered recess extending inwardly from the outer face of said rim and opening laterally of said wheel at one side only and through the rim, one side of the recess being serrated, a wedging key engageable in the recess for fixedly fastening ends of a band about the rim, the wheel being provided with a plug hole crosswise thereof and having intersection with the recess, and a wedging lock plug insertable in said hole for coacting with the key in the recess in effecting clamping relationship therebetween.
