MEMBER ADAPTED FOR DISPLAYING AD- VERTISING MATTER.
John C. Dunn, Providence, R. I.
Application November 21, 1938, Serial No. 241,576
l Claims.
My invention relates to closure devices for tubular members.
While my invention may be employed as a closure device for a tubular member of any type, such as a can, container, pipe end, etc., it is particularly adapted for use in displaying advertising matter on the end of a tubular spool member.
My invention includes a cover for the tubular member and expanding Wedge means having portions eccentrically pivotally secured together mounted on the inner surface of said cover, insertable when in alignment within said tubular member end and pivotable on relative rotation of said cover and spool member by the action of portions of said expanding Wedge means frictionally contacting the inner periphery of said tubular member to positions positively gripping the inner Wall of said tubular member to retain said cover to said tubular member end.
I believe I am the first therefore, to provide a cover and expanding wedge means having portions thereof adapted to be inserted Within the tubular member end when in alignment, adapted on rotation thereof, to frictionally contact the inner wall of said tubular member to cause said Wedge means to expand to positively grip the inner wall of said tubular member vto secure said closure device to said tubular member end, namely, a device which functions on the frictional engagement of the portions thereof with the inner Wall of said tubular member to cause positive locking of the cover member thereto. The cover. member, may if desired, carry suitable advertising insignia either directly imprinted thereon, or on a label pasted, or otherwise secured thereto.
A further object of my invention is to provide a securing means'which will function on slight variations in diameter of the tubular member itself.
These and such other objects of my invention as may hereinafter appear will be best understood from a description of the accompanying drawing which illustrates my closure device applied as a device for displaying advertising matter on the y end of a tubular spool member.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of my invention adapted to carry advertising matter applied as a closure device for the end of a tubular spool member.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 with the locking disc members of my invention in alignment.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view similar to Fig. 2 with the disc members rotated to relative locking position.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section view taken along the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken along the line 5--5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is an inner end elevation of my improved end closure device per se With the discs thereof in alignment.
Fig. '7 is an inner end elevation of my improved end closure device per se With the discs thereof relatively rotated to disaligned locking position.
In the drawing, wherein like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout, I generally indicates an end closure device for a tubular member constructed in accordance with my invention.
While as stated, my improved end closure device may be employed as a closure device for a tubun lar member such as a can or tubular paper container, it is particularly adapted for use in displaying advertising matter on the end of a tubular spool I2 of a type adapted to have various types of textile fabric or threads wound thereon.
My invention includes a cover I@ for the end of the tubular or spool member I2. While this may be of any particular shape, in the embodiment shown, it has an external periphery substantially the size of the external periphery of the spool I2. Said cover I4 may carry advertising matter I5 on the outer surface thereof and it is immaterial Whether the advertisingmatter I6 be directly imprinted on the cover or on a label I8 adapted to be aflixed to the outer surface of said cover.
I provide expanding wedge means having portions eccentrically pivotally secured together and mounted on the inner surface of said cover in- 'J sertable when in alignment Within said spool member and pivotable on relative rotation of said cover and spool member on peripheral contact thereof with the inner Wall of said spool or tubular member to disaligned positions gripping the inner wall of said spool member to secure said cover to said tubular member end.
In my preferred embodiment, said Wedge means includes an outer disc member 29 of substantially the internal periphery of said tubular spool member I2 permanently secured to the inner surface of said cover I4 in any suitable manner such as by glue 22, an inner disc member 24 of substantially the internal periphery of said tubular spool member and means 26 to eccentrically secure said inner disc member 24IA on said outer disc member 20. Said mounting means 26 may consist of any suitable shape, such as a pin or other device projecting axially through said inner disc member 2A and axially within said outer disc member eccentrically of said disaligned disc members. In the preferred embodiment shown, as said ec" centric mounting means 26, I provide a rivet 213 having a head 28 adapted to abut the inner surface of the inner disc and prong means 30 insertable through said inner disc 24, outer disc 20 and reversely embedded within the Wall of said cover I4. It is obvious, however, that any suitable type of eccentric mounting means 26 may be employed.
I preferably construct the inner periphery of the tubular member I2 and the outer peripheries 32 and 34 of the outer and inner disc members 20 and 24 of materials capable of having frictional contact and braking action on each other. While any suitable type of material may be employed, I have found rough card board surfaces ideal for this purpose and hence preferably construct the spool member I2 and the discs 20 and 24 of card board, although it is obvious that any other suitable type of materials which will cause frictional gripping action with each other may be employed.
As shown in Fig. 6 the disc members 24 and 20 are aligned for insertion within said tubular member and after insertion, on rotation of said cover I4, said discs 20 and 24 are relatively eccentrically rotated by frictional contact of the peripheries thereof with the inner periphery of said tubular spool member and thus, with each portion thereof in contact tending to remain stationary and being eccentrically pivoted outwardly by rotation of said cover, said contacting portions relatively expand to grip opposite portions of the inner periphery of the tubular spool member positively to secure said closure device to said tubular spool member end in use.
I have found that with most substances a suitable frictional clamping action may be obtained even if metal be employed as one or more of the contacting surfaces, such as in a can. I may also, by merely attaching two of my improved closure devices together, provide means or a union for joining pipe ends together, such as in making up a fence.
It is obvious that the end closure device may be readily removed from its tubular member by rotating the device in the opposite direction to again bring the discs into alignment so that they may be axially withdrawn from the end of the tubular member.
It is apparent that I have provided a novel type of end closure device for a tubular member with the advantages described above.
It is understood that my invention is not limited to the specic embodiment shown and that various deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
