Description

Aug. 8, 1939. o. M. cAsE FASTENING DEVICE Filed Oct. 25, 1957 Patented Aug. 8, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,168,324 FASTENING DEVICE Application October 23, 1937, Serial No. 170,691
2 Claims.
. This invention relates to a fastening means for rails, and it is primarily an object of the invention to provide a fastening device to engage the inside flange of a rail to effectively maintain the same in applied position upon a cross tie.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a fastening device of this kind which may be readily adjusted to compensate for rail flanges of different widths together with means for efiectively maintaining the device in its desired selective adjustment.
The invention consists in the details of con struction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved fastening means whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in top plan illustrating a fastening device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in working position;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 with the locking plate removed;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a detailed fragmentary sectional viewltaken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure Figure 5 is a view in plan of the under or bottom side of the locking plate.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, T
0 denotes a tie of a type having a member I engage over the outer base flange 2 of a rail R mounted upon the tie T. The tie T at a desired point inwardly of the working position of the applied rail R has disposed therethrough from below an elongated threaded shank 3, the head 4 of which is snugly received within a pocket 5 provided in the under face of the tie T. The head 4 is maintained in this pocket 5 by an overlying plate 6 bolted, as at l, or otherwise secured to the tie T. The shank 3 freely passes through an opening 8 in a disk 9. This opening 8 is eccentric to the axial center of the disk 9 and is preferably positioned at a point relatively close to the periphery thereof. This disk 9 freely but snugly seats within a circular opening l0 disposed through a clamping-plate II. The lower portion of this opening I0 is of reduced diameter, as at Ill whereby is produced an annular shoulder l2 upon which the disk 9 rests. As is particularly illustrated in Figure 3, the top or outer surface of the applied disk 9 is flush with the adjacent top or upper surface of the clamping plate II. This clamping plate II is provided at one end with the holding lugs l4 which extend over and closely reengage the inner flange l5 of the rail R. 0
It is important that the clamping plate ll be adjusted toward or from the rail B. so that the fastening device, as herein disclosed, may be employed with equal facility with rails having base flanges of varying widths. When it is desired to 15 adjust the clamping plate I I it is only required that the disk 9 be swung around the shank 3 and to facilitate such operation, the disk 9 has disposed therethrough suitably spaced openings l6 whereby the disk 9 may be readily engaged by 20 a spanner wrench or kindred implement.
The periphery of the disk 9 is provided with a substantially semi-circular recess I! which is adapted to selectively register with similar recesses l8 provided in the wall of the opening l0. 5 This selective register of the recess l! with one of the recesses l8 depends upon the desired adjustment of the clamping plate ll. When the required adjustment of the clamping plate I I has been made a pin I9 is snugly engaged within the so registering recesses l1 and I8 whereby the disk 9 is effectually locked against rotation in either direction.
In the present embodiment of my invention this pin [9 is carried by and extends laterally 35 from a plate 20 which is generally termed a "locking plate. This plate 20 is of a diameter to be disposed not only over the applied disk 9 but to lap the plate II a distance sufficiently to completely conceal the recesses l8. This plate 20 ad- 40 jacent to its periphery is provided with an opening 2| through which the shank 3 is also disposed as is clearly illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawing.
It is to be noted that the pin I9 is so positioned with respect to the opening 2! in the plate 20 to 45 assure the pin l9 being properly engaged when the recess l! is in selective register with the recess I8.
The shank 3 is of a' length to extend above the applied plate 20 so that a clamping or holding nut 22 may be engaged with the free end portion of the shank 3 for desired holding coaction With the plate 20.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a fastening device constructed 55 in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. In combination with a tie, a fastening device for the inside flange of a rail comprising a shank extending upwardly from the tie, a disk eccentrically mounted upon the shank, a clamping plate provided with an opening in which the disk snugly engages, said clamping plate having means to engage the inside flange of the rail, the wall of the opening in the clamping plate being provided with a plurality of recesses, the periphery of the disk having a recess to be selectively brought into register with one of the first named recesses, said disk when so adjusted swinging on the shank, a locking plate eccentrically mounted on the shank and overlying the applied disk and the adjacent portion of the clamping plate entirely surrounding the opening in the plate, said locking plate having a pin extending within the registering recesses.
2. In combination with a tie, a fastening device for the inside flange of a rail comprising a shank extending upwardly from the tie, a disk eccentrically mounted upon the shank, a clamping plate provided with an opening in which the disk snugly engages, said clamping plate having means to engage the inside flange of the rail, the wall of the opening in the clamping plate being provided with a plurality of recesses, the periphery of the disk having a recess to be selectively brought into register with one of the first named recesses, said disk when so adjusted swinging on the shank, a locking plate eccentrically mounted on the shank and overlying the applied disk and the adjacent portion of the clamping plate entirely surrounding the opening in the plate, said locking plate having a pin extending within the registering recesses, and means on the shank and coacting from above with the locking plate for holding the locking plate in applied position.
