SKI HOLDER 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed March 13, 1937 java? Mow;
Patented May 31, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to ski holders.
Many an accident has taken place during the carrying of skis to and from ones home and the skiing grounds. It is difficult to hold the skis always vertically in front while carrying them, so that one is tempted to sling them atilt over ones shoulder or even to hold them horizontally. A slight turning, under such conditions, is liable to cause one end or the other of the skis to collide with a passing stranger or a piece of frangible property. It is a nuisance, furthermore, to be compelled to devote one or both hands to holding the skis, as it interferes with other use of the hands.
It is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved ski holder with the aid of which the skis will always be held substantially vertically upright, while leaving the hands free.
When the skis touch the person, furthermore, they are liable to leave their waxes or other coatings on the clothing, and another object of the invention, therefore, is to provide a ski holder of the above-described character that shall protect the clothing while the skis are carried about from place to place.
Other and further objects will be explained hereinafter and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention will now be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective View of. a ski holder embodying the present invention in its preferred form, shown carried by a person, with skis and poles carried thereon; Fig. 2 is a side elevation and Fig. 3 a front elevation of the same; Fig. 4= is a view similar to Fig. 2 of a modification; Fig. 5 is a view, upon a larger scale, of the modification shown in Fig. 4, detached from the skis and the poles shown in Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a section, upon a larger scale, taken upon the line 6-6 of Fig. 3, looking in the directions of the arrows.
In both the preferred embodiment of the invention, illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 6, and the modification of Figs. 4 and 5, the ski holder comprises means for holding a pair of skis 2, 5 near one end, say the upper end, as at 6, and means for holding the skis near the other end, say the lower end, as at 8. In both illustrated forms of the invention, the first-named means may be a strap IQ with which to secure the skis together at 6. The second-named means may also be a strap for securing the skis together at 8, as shown at 12 in Figs. 4 and 5, but it is preferred to insert the lower ends and the enlarged intermediate portions of the skis into a bag M. A strap l6 connects the upper and lower ski-holding means. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the lower end of the strap It may be secured to the bag in any desired way, as by sewing, at [8. In the embodiment illustrated by Figs. 4 and 5, the lower end of the strap It may be provided with an opening 20 for receiving the strap l2. The upper end of the strap 16 may be similarly provided with an opening 22 for receiving the strap it. By adjusting the position of. the strap ID on the skis, a space may be provided between the strap l6 and the skis large enough to permit a persons arm to be passed therethrough, and the shoulder may be placed just under the strap I0, 5 as shown in Fig. 1, so that the skis may be supported from the shoulder. The bag l4 and the skis therein may thus be carried in substantially vertical position, as is also illustrated in Fig. 1, while leaving both the persons arms free.
The use of the bag I4 protects the persons clothing from the waxes and the like on the skis, which is not true of the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
The upper end of the bag it may be provided .5 with a cord 24 threaded through openings 26 so as to enable one to close the free open end of the bag over the enlarged intermediate portion of the skis. The upper end of the bag is necessarily enlarged with respect to the restricted lower por- 30 tion of the bag, in order to receive the said enlarged intermediate portions of the skis. The lower parts of the bag may be provided with an opening 28 to permit water produced by melted snow to drop therethrough. 5
Poles 3!) may, of course, be carried along with the skis. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, they are carried in the bag M. In the modification, they are held together by the same straps It! and I 2.
Further modifications will occur to persons skilled in the art and all such are considered to fall within the spirit and scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is: r
1. A ski holder comprising a bag having a restricted lower portion for receiving the lower portions of a pair of skis and an enlarged upper portion for receiving the enlarged intermediate portions of the skis, means for closing the bag over the enlarged intermediate portions of the skis, a strap for holding the skis near their upper ends, and a strap for connecting the lower portion of the bag with the first-named strap, there being a space between the second-named strap and the skis large enough to permit a persons arm to be passed therethrough and to permit the person to carry the bag and the skis therein in substantially vertical position while leaving the said arm free.
2. A ski holder comprising a bag for receiving the lower portions and the intermediate portions of a pair of skis, means for closing the bag over the intermediate portions of the skis, and a strap for connecting the bag with upper portions of the skis, there being a space between the strap and the skis large enough to permit a person's arm to be passed therethrough and to permit the person to carry the bag and the skis therein in substantially vertical position while leaving the said arm free.
