Description

Patented May 10, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
3 Claims.
The invention consists of a specially designed pan-like funnel with screw connection to be attached to the ordinary screw cap container such as the two, two and one-half and five galion cans in which lubricating oil is sold to the retail trade or similar containers, and the object of the invention is to conveniently make use of such containers as receptacles in draining oil from automobile crankcases, transmissions and Tr differentials.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figures 1, 2 and 3 show the front, top and side views respectively; Figure 4 shows general view of the invention and Figure 5 shows it as it would be attached to container.
The invention is to be manufactured from sheet metal. I shows the pan-like part of the funnel; 2 is neck of funnel formed by seam. on top, as shown by 3, made either by crimping or soldering; 4 is the screw connection by means of which the invention is attached to the container of the type referred to herein; 5 is the connection between neck of funnel and the screw connection 4, which connection is made by crimping the edges of neck of funnel over opening of screw connection 4 in such manner as to make a swivel connection thereby permitting the funnel part to be turned to proper upright position, when screw connection 4 is tightly screwed to the container, connection at 5 is made at such angle as to provide necessary slant for proper flow of oil into the container after entering pan-like funnel. 6 is pouring. spout for use in emptying the container. Edge of pan-like opening shown by 1 will be rolled or seamed.
It can readily be seen that the drain funnel can be easily and quickly attached to the container, in connection with which it is to be used, and that it permits use of old oil containers as receptacles in draining oil from automobile crankcases, transmissions or differentials. After container is filled, the drain funnel can be easily detached and attached to another container or, if desired to again use the same container, the drain funnel can be left attached and the oil poured from the container thru the drain funnel and by use of the pouring spout 6.
I claim:
1. A funnel having specially designed pan-like body tapering into a neck on one side for horizontally emptying, with screw connection, to fit containers such as the two, two and one-half 15 and five gallon cans in which lubricating oil is sold to the retail trade, attached to the neck by means of swivel joint, to be screwed onto such container for draining oil from automobile crankcases, transmissions or difierentials. 20
2. A side emptying funnel for car owners having a pouring spout on one side and a neck on the other side to which is attached, by swivel joint,
a screw cap connection of a size to fit containers such as the two, two and one-half and five gallon 25 cans in which lubricating. oil is sold.
3. A side emptying funnel, having pan-like body integrally tapering horizontally into a neck on one side and pouring spout on the other side, with screw connection attached to the neck by means of a swivel joint, the screw connection being of the kind that will fit containers such as the two, two and one-half and five gallon cans in which lubricating oil is sold to the retail trade.
