3 Claims. (01. 101-151) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in an intaglio printing machine.
The invention has for an object the construction of a device as mentioned which is characterized by a frame for guiding material between an intaglio printing roller and a pressure drum and supported in a manner so that it may be raised to an inoperative position, and the. arrangement of an intaglio doctor blade located beneath the frame so as to be exposed and accessible when the frame is in the raised position.
Still further the invention proposes a specific arrangement for mounting and supporting the doctor blade so that it may be adjusted to various positions relative to the intaglio roller.
Another one of the objects ofythis invention is to construct the frame from side members connected by rods, and to provide guiding elements adjustably mounted upon the rods and adapted to be fixed in various positions to'guide materials of different widths through the printing machine.
Other andimportant objects will become clear as the description of the invention proceeds.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in whichthe various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The intaglio printing machine, according to this invention, includes a frame consisting of a base plate Hi supporting a pair of spaced parallel vertical wall plates H. An intaglio printing roller I2 is rotatively mounted between the Wall plates H. A pressure drum I3 is superimposed on said intaglio roller and is adjustably mounted be- 15 tween the wall plates. A drive is provided for rotating the intaglio roller.
A pair of web elements I4 is formed on the innor faces of the wall plates H and are adapted to cooperate with a frame l5 for guiding material-between the printing roller !2 and the pressure drum l3. A doctor blade I6 is arranged beneath the frame l5 and is cooperative with the intaglio printing roller l2 as hereinafter more fully described.
The intaglio printing roller l2 comprises a mandrel IT on the central portion of which there is supported an engraved or cut intaglio printing sleeve l2 Side sleeves iii are mounted upon the .mandrel I1. and serve to keep the printing element I2 in proper position on the mandrel. Thepressure drum I3 is supported upon a shaft which is rotative in bearings 2| vertically slidably supported on track elements 22 formed in the side walls ll. Pressure springs 23 are engaged on thetop and bottom sides of the bearing blocks 2! and serve to resiliently support the 24 is adjustably mounted on the top of each wall plate I l and is cooperative with the pressure springs 23 for controlling the pressure of the pressure drum. The drive for the intaglio printing roller 12 includes a worm 25 fixed on an extended end of the mandrel ii. and located on the outer side of one of the wall plates II. This worm 25 is in mesh witha worm pinion 26. on a drive shaft 27 rotatively supported in bearings 28 on the side of one wall plate. This drive shaft 2'! is provided with a pulley 29 associated with a drive belt 38 adapted to engage with a prime mover,.such as an electric motor. Rotations from the drive shaft 21 are 55 communicated to rotate the intaglio printing roller l2.
The webs M are cast or attached or in any other manner formed on the inner faces of the vertical wall plates ll. These webs support the frame IS. The frame l5 comprises a pair of side arms I 5 which are pivotally supported at one of their ends on a spindle |5 which is rotative through the wall plates II. This spindle has a projecting end which is provided with a handle 32 by which the frame may be lifted when desired. The side arms l5 are provided with projecting stops 33 engageable with the ends of the webs l4 for limiting pivoting of the frame to a substantially vertical position, leaning slightly rearwards so as to maintain its position. Between the side arms l5 there are a plurality of parallel rods 35. A pair mounted on these rods. is provided with a projecting portion 31 with a set screw 38 by which the element 36 may be held in a fixed position. The arrangement permits the guide elements 33 to be moved closer together or spaced apart to properly guide strips of material of different widths through the printing machine.
The intaglio printing roller I2 is shown extending directly into an ink pan 40 which is supported on a bracket 4| supported on the base plate Hi. If desired, furnishing rollers, not illustrated on the drawings, may be interposed between the ink pan and the intaglio printing roll.
Another doctor blade I6 is provided at the rear end of the machine and is attached to a rotatable rod 45 The doctor blade I6 is fixedly mounted on a rod 45 and extends substantially radially thereof. This rod 45 is formed or provided with solid cylindrical heads 46 on the ends thereof. Each of these heads is formed with a peripheral groove it adapted to engage the material of the wall plates H to maintain the position of the rod 45. These heads 45 are slidably arranged in horizontal grooves or slots 48 formed in the wall plates One of the ends of each of the grooves 48 is provided with an enlarged portion 48 through which the heads 46 may be moved when desired. This arrangement permits the rod 45 which supports the doctor blade to be removed from between the wall plates II when desired.
Expansion springs 55 are arranged in the slots 48 and used between the braces of the slots and the heads 45 for normally urging the doctor blade support rod 45. This rod 45 is restrained from moving outwards by adjustment screws 5| threadedly mounted on the wall plates I. These screws 5| may be screwed inwards for moving the support rod 45 inwards and thus moving the doctor blade l5 correspondingly, or the screws 5| may be loosened to permit the springs 50 to move the doctor blade outwards. The doctor blade I6 and the support rod 45 are located beneath the frame l5 when the frame is in its lowered position.
An arrangement is provided for oscillating the doctor blade Hi. This arrangement consists of a radial pin 53 projecting from an extended end 45' of the rod 45 and meshing with a slot 54 in an arm 54 which is pivotally supported intermediate of its ends by a pin 55. The other end of the arm 54 is provided with a slot 54 engaging an eccentric pin 56 mounted on a worm gear 5'! meshing with a worm pinion 58 on an extending end H of the mandrel IT. The arrangement is such that when the intaglio printing roller Each guide element 36 of spaced guide elements 36 are slidably equipped" rotates, the rotation will be transmitted to turn the gears 58 and 51 and to pivot the arm 54 and so oscillate the rod 45 and the doctor blade.
A radial arm 60 connects with the end 45' of the doctor blade support rod and supports an adjustable weight 6| which controls the pressure of the doctor blade engaging against the intaglio printing roller. In Fig. 12 a leather strip or other strip of material 63 is illustrated provided with an embossed design 64. This strip of material may be guided between the guiding elements 36 and over the frame l5 and through the printing machine which will apply color to the raised portions. This is merely by way of illustration. The intaglio printing machine may also print upon fiat surfaces as well as the raised surfaces of embossed patterns.
The operation of the device is as follows:
A web of material to be printed is supported upon the frame I5 between the guide elements 36 and ,is engaged between the intaglio printing roller and the pressure drum. Suitable pressure for printing is provided by the control screws 24. The doctor blade IE will operate to scrape off excess ink from that the roller carries enough ink to print its engraved or cut design.
A feature of the printing machine is the frame l5 and the location of the doctor blade beneath the frame. Thus the frame l5 may be tilted upwards as indicated by the dot and dash lines in Figs.,3 and 7 to completely expose the doctor blade. The doctor blade may be removed by loosening the screws 5| until the heads 46 may pass through the large ends 48 of the slots 48. It is an advantage to have the doctor blade located beneath the movable frame l5 in that it then does not increase the size of the machine while it is ata location which permits it to be readily removed.
In Fig. 14 a. two color intaglio printing machine is shown constructed according to this invention, each unit of which is identical to the machine just described. These identical units are arranged in tandem so that the strip of material 63 may first be passed through one printing machine and then through the second to receive two colors. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous form and similar parts may be recognized by the same reference numerals.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:-
1. In an intaglio printing machine a frame consisting of a base plate and a pair of spaced parallel vertical wall plates, an intaglio. printing roller rotatively mounted between said wall plates, and a doctor blade engaging said intaglio roller, said doctor blade comprising a rod, a blade substantially radially supported upon said rod and having its free end engaging said intaglio printing roller, head members on the ends of said rod slidably engaging horizontal slots formed in said wall plates, resilient means urging said heads in one direction, and screws for holding the heads against the action of said resilient means.
2. In an intaglio printing machine a frame the intaglio printing roller so 1 consisting of a base plate and a pair of spaced parallel vertical wall plates, an intaglio printing roller rotatively mounted between said wall plates, and a doctor blade engaging said intaglio roller, said doctor blade comprising a rod, a blade substantially radially supported upon said rod and having its free end engaging said intaglio printing roller, head members on the ends of said rod slidably engaging horizontal slots formed in said wall plates, resilient means urging said heads in one direction, and screws for holding the heads against the action of said resilient means, said slots being provided with enlarged portions at specific areas through which the heads may be removed when the support rod is in a pre-determined position.
3. In an intaglio printing machine, a frame having a pair of spaced parallel vertical wall plates, formed with horizontal slots, an intaglio form roller rotatively mounted between said wall plates, and a doctor blade engaging said form roller, said blade comprising a rod, a blade having one of its edges mounted on said rod and having its free edge engaging said form roller, cylindrical head elements on the ends of said rods formed with peripheral grooves which engage the material of the wall plates around said horizontal slots through which they engage for maintaining said rod in various slidable adjustable positions between said wall plates, a spring operating between one side of said head elements and the back end of said slot to urge said doctor blade away from said form roller, an adjustment screw threadedly engaged through said wall plate and extending into said slot and abutting the said head elements to hold said doctor blade in various adjusted positions with relation to said form roller against the action of said spring, and means for laterally oscillating said doctor blade in all the adjusted positions thereof.
