Therolls which are usedfor water marlp ing paper are very large, and it has been extremely difficult and expensive, on accountof theirsize, to provide the necessary configuration or design on the surfaces of thejrolls. With my invention however, a .simple device is employed whereby the markingor engraving of patterns or designs enlarge rolls of this character 1s accomplished easily :at. a comparativelysmall expense. t

An elongated guide plate 38 is mounted on the upper or horizontal flange of the angle iron 19 as indicated in Fig. 6, and supports a pattern holder 39, which Is formed with flanges 40 engaging respectively the front and rear edges of the plate 38, so as to be movable therealong. A thumb screw 41 is threaded through the front guide flange 40 for locking the pattern holder 39 in various positions of adjustment along the plate 38. This pattern holder 39 is preferably formed with a shallow seat in the upper face to receive a pattern 42, which latter has on its upper face the design which is to be engraved on the roll 11, said pat tern being held in place by cap screws 43 at each end, which engage through apertures in the ends of the pattern 42, and are threaded into the pattern holder 39. Recesses- 44 are preferably provided in the pattern for the heads of the cap screws. For leveling up the pattern 42, a screw 45 is threade through same adjacent each corner so as to bear against the bottom of the seat in the pattern holder 39.
The outer end of the bent arm 36 is provided with a tracer stylus 46 which is located so that it may be operated by means of the handle 37 to follow the design of the pattern 42, when the latter is adjusted to the proper position along the plate 38, and the head 35 has a routing or engraving tool 47 mounted'thereon, which by reason of the eidograph structure which carries both the engraving tool and tracer stylus, is caused to follow a path corresponding to that of the tracer stylus 46 and serves to engrave the design of the pattern 42 on the surface of the roll 11 as the tracer stylus 46 follows the design of the pattern 42.
The routing tool 47 is mounted to rotate in a barrel 48 and driven from any suitable source of power through the flexible shaft 49, or in any other convenient manner, and the head 35 is formedwith a hub 50, having an aperture .to receive the barrel 48 which is clamped in position in any convenient manner, as for example, by the set screw 51.
It will be observed that the routing tool 47, in order to properly engrave the surface of the roll 11, is required to' follow a curved line of elevation as it moves across the crown of the roll 11, and to this end the upper surface of the pattern 42 is curved from front torear as shown particularly in Fig. 6 on a; radius which bears the same relation to the radius of the roll 11 as the distance of the routing tool 47 from the centers 33 bearsto the distance of the tracer stylus 46 from the same centers. Theradius' of the upper surfaced the: pattern 42 15 therefore, Suficiently less than the radius of the rollll, so that as the stylus 46 atthe outer end of the bent arm 36 moves forwardly and backwardly over the surface of the pattern 42, the routing tool 47 remains constantly in the same relative position with respect to thesurface of the roll 11, so that when the routing tool is set for a certain distance of penetration, it will out a uniform depth at any point of adjustment, so lon as the stylus 46 maintains theasame relative position or depth of penetration in the upper surface of the pattern 42.
In engraving the cylinder the operator applies pressure to the handle 37 to hold the tracer stylus 46 in engagement with the pattern 42. To lift the 'tool from engageinent with the cylinder when pressure on the handle 37 is relieved a spring device is associated with the tracer. To this end a hub 52 is formed at the juncture of the handle 37 and bent arm 36 with an aperture in which the stem 53 is slidably mounted and the stylus 46 is secured by a set screw 54 or in any convenient-manner in a socket which is provided therefor in the lower end of the stem 53. The aperture in which the stem 53 is located is enlarged at the lower end as at 55 and contains aspring 56 which is compressed between the shoulder 57 at the upper end of the enlargement 55 and an annular flange 58 of the stem 53. Lock nuts 59 are threaded on the upper end of the stem 53 to hold the spring 56 under compression and limit the sliding movement of the stem 53.
In the operation of this device, the patpattern is than marked on the section of the roll as indicated at 60 in Fig. 2, after which the roll 11 is turned the required extent so that the pattern may again be marked on the roll 11 in a section adjoining the previously marked section, and so that the design will match up with the design which has been previously marked thereon.
To facilitate the turning of the roll for this-purpose, a worm gear 61. is provided,
which may be secured to the projecting end of the shaft 16 so as to mesh with a worm 62 on a shaft 63, carried by bearings 64 and 65 of the brackets 18 and 17 respectively. From the foregoing it will be observed that I have provided a simple and convenient device by means of which the surfaces with a desi at a-comparatively small cost, and that ti: devicenis capable of being readily operated without necessitating a high degree of skill on the part of the operator.
While I have shown and described my invention in a preferred form, I am aware that various 'changes and modifications may be made without departing from the rinciples of my invention, the ,scope of whic is to be determined by the appended claims.

2. -In an apparatus for engraving adesign on the cylindrical surface of a roll, a main frame having means for rotatably supporting the roll, apantograph frame, a supporting base therefor, an engraving tool and a tracer mounted on'said pantograph frame, and a pattern corresponding to a relatively small segment of the cylindrical surface of the-roll and adapted to cooperate with said tracer to guide the tool to limited extents longitudinally and circumferentiallyf of the roll to engrave a corresponding seg mental section of its surface, said supporting base and 'said pattern being longitudinally adjustable on said main frame to different fixed positions and said roll being rotatably adjustable to different fixed ositions, whereby diflerent longitudinal and circumferential segmental sections of the roll surface are brolught into the field of operation of said too I 3. In an apparatus for marking a design cm the surface of a roll, the combination of a support on which the roll is mounted to turn, an eidograph extending transversely over the roll and having a base adjustable lengthwise of the roll, a marking tool and a .tracer stylus carried by said eidograph and a pattern adjustablelengthwise of the roll and having a curved surface, the radius of which is in the same proportion to the radius of the roll as the distance between the markof the eidograph is to the distance between the tracer stylus and the base of the eidograp 7 In an apparatus for engraving a design on the surface of a marking roll, the combination of a main frame having means for rotatably supporting the roll, a pantograph frame having a base mounted on said main frame and adjustable lengthwise of the roll, a tool and a tracer-carried by said pantograph frame and a attern mounted on the main frame and a justable lengthwise of the roll, said attern corresponding to a relatively small segmental section of the cylindrical surfaceof the roll and having, a segmental cylindrical surface uponwhich the design is marked, said pattern cooperating with the tracer to guide the tool to limited extents longitudinally and circumde'pth of its out uniform. An engraving machine comprising a supporting frame provided with bearings for sustaining the roll to be engraved, a attern support mounted at one side of the onmounted on said support and gitudinal axis of said roll, a pattern adjustable thereon in. the direction of the axis of the roll into a plurality of fixed positions upon said support, a tool support extendin longitudinally of-said roll and upon the side of its axis opposite the pattern support, a tool carrier adjustable into a plurality of fixed positions lengthwise upon said tool support,

The method of engraving a design upon the cylindrical surface of a marking roll that consists in preparing a pattern corresponding in. area to a relatively small segmental section of the area of the cylindrical surface of theroll, mounting said pattern for adjustment longitudinally of the roll to different fixed positions, mounting a pantographic en raving device for adjustment to correspon to the different positions of adjustment of the pattern, mounting the roll for rotatable adjustment to bring different circumferential segmental sections thereof into cooperative relation with the pantographic device and pattern, effecting such adjustments, and, while the roll 'is held stationary, employing the pattern in each of said-different adjustments to guide the engraving device to engrave a corresponding segmental section of the surface of the roll. 10.
