The screws 28 are all operated in unison from a hand wheel 146 mounted on a shaft 147 supported on the rear ends of the several base sections 21, connected to the screws 28 by a succession of bevel gears 148 each meshing with a cooperatin bevel gear 149 on one of the screws 28, and t erefore effective to advance and retract all of the brackets 27 in unison upon operation of the single hand wheel 146; the screws 32 are all operated in unisonfrom ahand wheel 150 mounted on a shaft 151 supported by the brackets 27 of the several units A connected to the screws 32 by a succession of worms 152 each meshing with a cooperating worm gear 153 on one of the screws 32, and therefore efiective to raise and lower all of the supports 31 in unison upon operation of the single hand wheel 150; the air cylinders 63 are all operated in unison by connection to a single supply line controlled by a single valve (not shown); the cutter heads 40 are all coordinated to oscillate in unison by means of connections 188 extending between the shafts 144 of the various units A and are operated in unison by meansof a single actuating lever 154 secured to the shaft 144 of the left hand unit A, and,
if we may assume for the present that each work support 23 rotates as a unit with the corresponding intermediate member 140, the
intermediate members 140 and work supports 23 are coordinated to operate in unlson by means of a reciprocating member 155 c0nnected to arms 156 extending rearwardly from the intermediate members 140, and are 0 erated in unison'by means of a lever 157 pivoted atvl58 to a projection 159 extending fromxa pedestal. 99 rising from the base 21 of the left hand unit A and also carrying a slide 101 reciprocable in guideways 100 formed in the pedestal 99, connected to the lever 157 by means of a link 160, and connected by means of a lever 161 to the point of pivotal connection of the reciprocating member 155 and the arm 156 of the left hand unit A. y I
From the above description it will obvious tothose skilled in the art that operation of the actuating lever 154 will rotate the shafts 144 of the various units A to oscillate the cutter heads 40 of all of the units A in unison, and, still assuming that each work support 23 operates as a unit with the corresponding intermediate member 140, that operation of the actuating lever 157 will act through the reciprocating member 155 to oscillate in unison all of the intermediate members 140 and work supports 23.
Under these circumstances it is of course '15 and work supports 23 by the actuating levers 154: and 1575 this coordination-beingeifected herein by providing on the shaft 70 of the left handunit A a second gear 162 meshing with a segment 163 carried by a lever-164 pivoted at v 165 to the supporting plate and connected by means of a link 166 to a slide 109 reciprocably supported in guideways 108 in the pedestal 99 andcarrying a pin 118 extending downwardly into the cavity 119 in a pattern plate120 secured to the slide 101 -by means of set screws 122 and havingits cavity 119' of that contour which in coordination with the pin 118 will restrict the movements of the actuating levers '154and157, and of the work supports 23'and cutter heads 10, to within the limits of the design desired to be cut by each of the cutting unitsA; Y It will be understood that with such an arrangementthe c'utting devices areoperated until the cutting tools have cut cut-the entire substance within the limits of the'desired design, that the control herein shown is not automatic in the sense that 'it'itself causes the oscillations of the work supports 23 and cutter heads-4L0 necessary to cut the desired designpbut on the contrary that the control herein shown merely limits the cutting to thelimits of the desired design and leaves the oscillation of the work supports'23 cutter heads eiO to be effected bythe operator within these limits by operation of the actuating levers 154 and 157.
In the above discussion of the' operationof the device eachwork support'23 has been zi-ssumedto operate as a unit Withthecorresponding' intermediate member 1&0 and were each ofthe cutting units A to be called upon to cut the design but a single time such a construction would be entirely satisfactory. In 1 engraving a-tire'mold, however, it is necessary to repeat-the design many times about the peripheryof the mold and accordingly a machine for that use must be so constructed that each work support 23 does .move exactly L ith thecorrespondingintermediate member 140 during the cutting of anyone design to accurately transmitto each work support the actuations of the pattern plate carrying slide'lDl, yet ismovable relative'to the cor-- responding intermediate member 140 to space v rious units A, by securing the shaft 171 and rack 168 against relative reciprocatory movement whereby, 1n the absence or'rotation of the sham 171, the rack 168 and shaftl? 1 force the intermediate members 1 10 and work supports23 to-rotate in unison and, upon rotationof'the shaft 171, the worms17O are effectiveto advance the work supports 23 relative to the intermediate members 140 to secure the desired spacing of the Work supports 23 into position for repetition of the design.
in the embodiment ofmy invention herein shown I secure this coordination between the rack 168 and the shaft 171 by securing both to a base 172 reciprocable in a pedestal 173 carried by the base section 21 of-the left hand unit A, the shaft l'ilbein rotatably and non reciprocably mounted in a bearing 17 1 caricd by the base 172 and the rack 168' being secured directly'to the base 172 by a pair of machine screws V175 and I provide for the desired rotation of the shaft 171 by means ofa dividing head consisting of an arm 132 p'iv-. otedupon an extension 176 of the base 172, provided with a handle133 comprising a stop pin 134 arranged to seat within an aperture 135 in the extension 176 to hold the arm 132 against rotatiom-and provided also with a a gear 136 formed integral with the arm 132 and connected through an intermediate gear 131 to a'gear 138 carried by the shaft 171,'the
intermediate ear 137 bein em 10 ed to erh t: p y P ous that nnd'er normal coneitions the shaft 171 'is locked against rotation "by the presence of the pin 13a in the recess'135and that under this condition the worms 170 become 1 in effect a rack meshing with the worm wheels 169 and effective, an cooperat on with the rack 168 'meshing with the sectors 16?,to force ea h work support 23 to rotate in unison with the corresponding intermediate member 1 10, thatthis result' is achieved with- 2 out interfering with the oscillation of the work supports23 by the actuatinglever 15711 interconnecting the rack and shaft 1'31 To those'skilled inthe art itwill be obvi-- throu h the base 172 itself slidably mounted,
Worms 170, acting from the base 172 as fixed by the engagement of the racks 168 with the intermediate members 140, act through the V worm gears 169 to rotate each work support 23firelative to the corresponding intermediate member'glritl to thus space each Work support 23 for the repetition of the design and by an amount determined by the change gears 137 and 138 and therefore widely variable to widely vary the number of times the design is repeated in the mold.
Inlhe above discussion of the device it has been assumed that the cutter 45 retained the same reciprocatory position throughout the entire cuttin operation. In many cases the design is lai out on an arc and it is entirely ossible for the cutter to act in this manner. other cases, however, and particularly in en aving designs extending down over the si o wall of the tire, it becomes desirable to automatically vary the reciprocatory position of the cutter 45 to avoid the inconvenience and expense resulting in following the practice new general in the art of dividing each such design into two or more parts each of which may be engraved without change in reciproeatory position of the cutter.
In the embodiment of my invention herein shown I disclose means for automatically accomplishing this change in reoiprocatory movement of the cutter 45 by providing for I variation in position of the set screw 60 by pivoting the carrying arm 62 to the supportbracket 59 at 177, prolongating this supporting arm 62 beyond the pivot point 17 7, andproviding on t is prolon ation 17 8 a follower pin 179 arranged to ri e in the groove 1.80 of an arcuate cam 181 fixed to the side late 36 and effective through the pin 179 and ever 62 to vary the position of the stop screw 60, and therefore of the arm 57 and sleeve 43 and cutter 45, to at all times maintain the cut- 45 at that reoiprocatory position corresponding to and determined by the contour of the cam groove 180 at that point corresponding to the then oscillatory position of the cutter head 40 upon the supporting plates and 36.
From the above description it will be obvione to those skilled in the art that by properlfioming the cam groove 180 I may provide any desired reciprocatory movement of the cutter 45 as the cutter head oscillates, to time rovide anydesired cross-sectional contour or the base of the cut, and particularly that Imay form the side wall design simulianeously with the operation of forming the tread design, and. also that I may form a tread design in which the base of the cut is ofiyier than arcuate.
It will of course be obvious that Imay re- .1 was ciprocate all of the cutters in unison by providing like cams 181 on all of the cutter heads 40.
And it willalso be obvious that I may operate as many units as desired and not merely two as shown herein.
0n the other hand, those skilled in the art will reanze that the molds to be engraved vary slightly in thickness even when supposed to be identical, and that a certain amount of adjustment is required in each unit A to care for this variation. Inasmuch as the supports 31 are all raised and lowered in unison I find it convenient to provide this individual adjustment in the manner herein shown, by forming each work support 23 in the form of alower section 182 carrying the annular boss 24 and the worm gear 169, and an upper section 183 directly supporting the work and screw-threaded to the lower section 182 to effect the desired adjustment by rotation relative to the lower section 182 and then be locked in adjusted position by suitable securing means (not shown).
I may also form in the lower section 182 an annular. T-slot 184 arranged to receive the heads 185 of bolts 186 freely slidable for spacing until tightened by rotation of the handied nuts 187 to lock the work support 23 to the intermediate member 140 independently of the rack 168 and shaft 171.
From the above description it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that I have provided engraving mechanism of the t pe suitable for engraving tire molds forme to engrave in a single operation a design of a contour other than arcuate, and operable to adjust all of the brackets 27 in unison and all of the supports 31 in unison, to adjust the work tables 23 individually, to actuate all of the work tables 23 in unison and all of the cutter heads 40 in unison, and to reciprocate all of the cutters 45 in unison, to thus en rave a plurality of molds in unison by a sing e operator from a single control and operating apparatus. Under these circumstances it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that I have provided engraving mechanism possessing advantages not possessed by any engraving mechanism heretofore known.
At the same time it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that the particular embodiment of my invention herein shown and described may be variously changed and modified without sacrificing the advantages of my invention or departing from the scope thereof. It will therefore be understood that the disclosure herein is illustrative only and that my invention isnot limited thereto.
