This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a rotary press.
'Ihe invention has for an object the construction of a press as mentioned which is characterized by one or more printing units each including a form roll with which an intaglio blade may be associated when required. Specifically, it is proposed to arrange each intaglio blade so that it may be placed into and taken out of operation as required. When thus constructed each printing unit is adapted to print according to various printing methods such as surface printing, various modifications thereof, intaglio printing, and various modifications thereof.
More specifically, it is proposed to adapt the printing press so that it may do surface printing by the use of copper, brass, or steel milled surface rolls, hand out or molded rubber rolls With Wood or metallic cores, rubber plates mounted on Wood or metal shells, curved electrotype plates, half tones mounted on Wood or metal, and other variations thereof. With respect to the intaglio printing it is proposed to arrange the printing press so that it may be accomplished by using all the known types of intaglio rolls such as photo engraved rollers, milled intaglio rolls, pantograph, and other variations thereof.
Furthermore, in addition to printing each printing unit is adapted to various types of coating such as immersion coating or staining, surface blotch coating, intaglio pad coating, and others.
A further object of the invention is to adapt the various printing units for receiving various colors and various types of inks and other printing materials which heretofore could not successfully be handled on one machine. Heretofore various machines were provided each capable of performing one duty, as for example, laminating or varnishing and lacquering or aniline printing, oil printing, etc., each being limited to its specific individual purpose. In other instances machines have been designed which were capable of printing with certain particular types of plates and rollers in conjunction with certain particular types of inks or coloring material. For example, it would require the use of paste inks to print on electrotype plates or rolls. According to this invention it is possible to use inks or other printing materials of Various consistencies to 'print on electrotype plates; even consistencies as thin as Water. t is therefore a further object of this invention to provide a printing unit which permits the use of many types of inks such as oils, Water, rotogravures,
(Cl. lill-153) anilines, lacquers, varnishes, pyroxylin, bronzes, micas, various adhesives for laminating, and other existing colors and materials many of which heretofore required special equipment.
Another one of the objects of this invention is to arrange the printing press so that it is capable of printing in various ways, for example:
. One side-two colors.
. Coating and printing o n the same side.
. Both sides coated.
. Both sides printed.
. Coat one side and print the other side.
. One sidesame color-both sides coated.
A still further object is to provide the printing press with a Welded or similar structural steel frame and then to adjustably mount brackets thereon for the various parts of the printing press, Which brackets are arranged in a manner to permit leveling. Thus, the necessity of leveling and truing the Welded steel frame is eliminated.
A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of an arrangement which permits the form rolls to be easily removed and replaced. I-Ieretofore it Was customary to force the form rolls upon a supporting shaft under great pressure. It Was then very difficult to remove the form roll. Specifically, the invention proposes an arrangement by which the form roll is releasably attached on the shaft in a simple and efficient manner.
Still further the invention contemplates an arrangement whereby each printing unit may be instantaneously shifted laterally and disengaged entirely from the pressure drum by movingl a lever. posed byA which the furnishing roll may be instantaneously shifted angularly out of contact with the form roll and the metal roll by a separate lever control.
Another object of the invention is the provision of heating drums mounted on the frame of the printing press at various locations and arranged to heat and dry the web of paper on either or both sides, as required.
Another one of the objects of the invention resides in the provision of a novel agitator for agitating the printing ink or other printing material within the ink pan. v

The invention, as illustrated on the drawings and explained in this specification, is applied to one type of a two color printing machine. It should be borne in mind that this is merely by way of illustration since it is just as applicable to a one color or other arrangement of two color, and also more than two color construction. The printing press, according to this invention, includes a printing frame consisting of a pair of spaced parallel top members I 0a and I0b supported upon vertical legs II which are braced by cross members I2. A pair of spaced parallel bottom members I 3a and I 3b are mounted upon the sides of the legs II. These different parts of the frame are welded together so as to form a rigid, solid and strong construction. At the centers of the top members Illa and IUb of the frame there are a pair of spaced apart brackets I4a and Mb. A pressure rubber drum roll l5 is rotatively mounted between the brackets Ida and I4b. Above this pressure rubber drum roll there is rotatively mounted a heating drum IB. This drum is also rotatively supported between the brackets.
A color unit is mounted on each side of the rubber drum roll I5 and includes a form roll I1 which coacts with the rubber drum roll I5. More specifically, each color unit comprises the form roll I1, a furnishing roll I8 engaging the form roll, and a roll, such as a brass roll I9 or other metal or rubber roll engaging the furnishing roll.
Each color unit includes a pair of side brackets 20. These side brackets are slidably mounted within track elements 2| fixedly mounted on theV members Illa and Illb. The approximate contours of the brackets 2U may be followed from a careful inspection of Fig. 5. Starting at the bottom portion, indicated byrreference numeral 20a, the bracket extends upwards along the side portion 20h, then continues horizontally outwards into a portion 20c. From this portion the bracket extends along a top portion 20d to a slightly lowered top area 29e. From here the bracket extends upwards into a portion 201. This portion 2U] extends downward along the side 20g which terminates at the bottom in the bottom portion 20a. The brass roll I9 is rotatively mounted between the portions 20e of the brackets by reason of having a shaft 22 rotatively engaging the brackets 20. The form roll I1 is rotatively mounted between the portions 20j of the brackets. Slide elements 23 are slidably mounted in the tracks 2I immediately adjacent the outer sides 20h of the brackets 20. These slide elements 23, at one of their ends, rotatively support the ends of screws 24. 'I'hese screws are threadedly engaged in brackets 25 xedly attached upon the tracks 2|. A rod 26 extends between the slides 23 and carries eccentrics 21 working in bearings 28 at the ends of links 29 which have their other ends pivotally connected by pins 30 with the sides 20h of the brackets. one of the ends of the rod 26.
The screws 24 may be rotated to move the slides 23 and the brackets 20 as a unit and so control the pressure between the form roll I1 and the rubber drum roll I5. When desired, the handle 3I may be turned through a portion of a complete turn to cause the eccentrics 21 to move the brackets 20 relatively closer to the slides 23. Thus, the form roll I1 may be moved out of contact with the rubber drum roll I5 without changing the adjustments of the screw 24.
The eccentrics 21 are arranged so that they are slightly turned past the dead centers when the brackets 2U are in the remote positions from the slides 23 so that the slides 23 and the brackets 20 are locked ina rigid unit. It is for this reason that the pressure produced by the screws 24 may easily be transferred to the form roll I1 to engage against the pressure rubber drum roll I5.
Auxiliary slides 32 are slidably mounted upon the portions 20d of the brackets 20 and are rotatively associated with screws 33. These screws threadedly engage through brackets 29 fixedly mounted on the portions 20d. Auxiliary brackets 35 are pivotally mounted by pins 36 to the slides 32. A rod 36 extends between the brackets 32 and xedly carries eccentrics 31 which are associated with bearings 38 of links 39. These links are pivotally connected by pins 4U to the auxiliary brackets 35. A handle 4I is attached upon one end of the rod 36. Bearings 42 are vertically slidably mounted upon the auxiliary brackets 35 and are associated with screws 42' threadedly engaging standards 43 xedly mounted ongthe auxiliary brackets 35. The furnishing roll I8 is mounted between the bearings 42. The arrangement is such that the screws 33 may be turned to move the brackets 32 and so indirectly move the furnishing roll I8 against-or from the form roll I1. The pivot 36 is slightly below the horizontal center line of the rod 36 so that the brackets 35 are past their dead center and there is no tendency for them to turn clockwise as viewed in Fig. 5. It is possible to pull down the brackets 35 at the outer sides of the pivots 3E so that the furnishing roll I8 is simultaneously moved out of contact with the brass roll I9 and the form roll I1. The screws 42 may be turned to control the pressure between the furnishing roll I8 and the brass roll I9.
An intaglio printing unit is associated with each form roll I1 and is directed according to the proposed rotation of the form roll I1. For this reason in the right hand printing unit shown in Fig. 2, the intaglio blade is below the form roll I1, while in the left hand unit it is above the form' roll. First considering the right hand unit, the intaglio printing unit consists of a pair of brackets 45 pivotally mounted at the points 46 on the brackets 20. These brackets 45 have shoe portions 41 resting against adjustment screws 48 which threadedly engage through lug portions 49 projecting from the brackets 20. The brackets 45 also have head portions 50. A shaft 5I is engaged between the head portions 50. This shaft carries a body 52-from which a blade 53 extends.

A grooved Wheel 55 isflxed upon one end` of the shaft 5| and is engaged by a blade 56 which is mounted on an arm 51. This arm' ispivotally supported by a pintle 5B at its extremity. A worm pinion 62 engages this worm wheel and is xedly mounted on the. shaft 22 of the brass roll.
At one side of the machine (the near side as viewed in Fig. 1) a gear drive system is provided whioh may be traced by starting at the drive shaft 63. This drive shaft may be supplied with a pulley and a belt to obtain rotations from an outside force'. A pinion 64. is mounted upon the drive shaft 83 and meshes with a pinion 65 rotatively supported on the bracket Mb. This pinion 65 meshes with a gear 86 mounted upon pressure rubber drum roll I5. A gear B1 is m-ounted upon the shaft of the form roll I1 and meshes with the gear 99; This gear 61 also meshes with a gear 68 mounted upon the shaft of the furnishing roll I8. The gear |58Y in turnv meshes with a gear 69 mounted on` the shaft 22 of the brass roll. It' will thus be seen that the shaft 22A receives rotations indirectly from the drive shaft 63 and in turn rotates the worm wheel 6|v which causes the arm 51 to oscillate, which in turn oscillates the shaft 5| and thus theblade 53.
Now referring to the print unit at the left in Fig. 2 it should be noted that there are a pair of top arms 10 which are pivotally supported by pintles 1| upon lugs 12' projecting from the top portions 20)c of the brackets 29. Screws 13 are threadedly` associated with the arms 19 and abut lugs 14 upon the portions 20j of the brackets 20. Thus, the arms 19 may be supported inv various adjusted positions. The free ends of the arms 29 support a shaft 15l upon which an intaglio unit is mounted; This intaglio printing unit consists merely of a body portion andA blade similar to the parts 52 and 53 previously refemed to. The blade acts against the print roll. Adjustable weights 1S are mounted upon radial arms 11 projecting from the shaft 15 tol force the blade against the form roll with suitable pressure. At one end of the shaft 115 therev is a grooved Wheel' 'I8 which engagedr by the forked end of an arm 19. This arm has a boss 89 at its bottom end which slidably engages upon a stud BI mounted on the bracket 29. A grooved wheel 82 is associated with the lower end of the arm 19 and is engaged by the end ofy an arm 82 which is pivotally mounted by a pintle 93 at its remote end. This pintle engages a bracket 84 projecting from the bracket 29. Intermediate of its ends the armv 82' is fo-rmed with a slot 59 which is engaged by a pin B9 projecting from a worm wheel 6| engaging a Worm 62 upon the shaft 22 of the brass roll I9.
The print unit at the left in Fig. 1 is driven by gears 61, 68 and 69 as previously described relative to the unit at the right. Each of the gears 68 mesh with the said gear 69 on the shaft 22. Each gear 69 is utlized to-drive an ink stirrer for the printing unit. There is. a beltY 81l extending from a pulley: coaxial with the gear 69 and engaging a pulley 89 upon a shaft 89 of a stirrer. mechanism. This shaft 89 is supported by brackets 90 upon the stationary brackets 29. The shaft 89 supports a tubular member 9| formed with a. continuous thread 92 extending from one end portion to the other end portion, and back again. A follower 93 is mounted on the tubular member 9| and has a pin 94 engaging thread 92. This follower 93 is steadied by a forked shaped portion 93' engaging a stationary rod 94! xed'on a guard 95 supported across the top of the tube 9|. An arm 96 projects from the follower 93 and engages into an ink pan 91. This'ink pan is supported by rods 98 fixed to the brackets 20. The brass roll I9 extends into the ink pan 91, as clearly shown in Fig. 6. A rollY of paper 99is mounted upon a rod |09 indirectly supported upon one of the ends of the members I3a and |312'. Specifically, one of the ends of the rod |99 is mounted on a bracket I 9| slidably mounted in a track element |02. A screw |93 is threadedly associated with the track element |92 and rotatively with the bracket |9| which permits adjustment of the rod so that the web of paper from the roll 99 may unwind in a true manner.
The other end of the rod |99 is merely rotatively supported and connected with a brake device I90a.. From the roll 99 there extends a web portion 99a which engages through the machine as hereinafter further described, and finally terminates in a receiving roll 99. This receiving roll 99 is mounted. upon a shaft |99 which at one end is adjustable by a mechanism consisting of the bracket |9I, the track |92, and the screw |03 as previously described. The other end of the shaft |99 is associated with a drive device which includes a brake structure. Specincally, this brake device includes a belt |95 which extends upwards over a wheel |99 mounted upon one end of the shaft of one of the form rolls I1. There is a pressure roll |91 upon arms |98- adapted to be moved by a screw |99. This pressure roll |91 engag-es a portion of the belt |95. The belt also engages over a roll I I9. This roll I|0 is associated with a gear system III, the last gear of which is fixed upon the rod |90.
The web of paper, starting from the supply roll 99, continues into the said web portion 99a and then over several tensioning rods II 5. These tensioning rods are supported between blades I I6 attached to the top members Ia and Ib. The web then continues over a guiding rod H6' supported between the brackets Illa and |911. It then passes up between the pressure rubber drum I5 and one'of the form rolls I1. It then extends over the heating drum i6, and continues down between the other form roll I1 and the pressure rubber drum roll I5. From this point there is a web portion 99h which extends downwards over another heating drum I I1 which is rotatively supported on a standard I I8 supported on the members |90, and |313 of the frame of the machine. From the heating drum I|1 a web portion 99o extends upwards over another heating drum |I9 which is rotatively supported in brackets |20 mounted upon the legs II of the frame of the machine. From the heating drum IIS a web portion extends over guide bars I2! and |22 to a web portion 99d which terminates upon the roll 99. tuted. At the other side of the machine there is a belt |25 which is connected between pulleys |26 mounted on the shafts of the heating drums ||1 and ||9. Each of the heating drums merely comprises a hollow cylinder rotatively mounted and connected by a swivel connection |21 to a steam inlet pipe. The heating drum I6 is driven by a gear drive consisting of gear |30 meshing with gear 66 and fixed on shaft |3| provided with a gear |32 meshing with a gear |33 fixed coaxial with said drum I6.
The frame of the printing press which is composed of the members |0a and |012, the legs the cross members I2, and the bottom members |3 and |3b are welded together or secured together in any other inexpensive manner even though the construction is quite rough. In order that the operative parts of the printing press betrue and accurate a leveling arrangement is provided for each of the parts which come into contact with portions of the rough frame of the machine. For example, the leveling arrangement is applied to the tracks 2|, the brackets 4a and |4b, etc. Specifically, the leveling arrangement comprises several set screws |35 (see Fig. 5) engaged through flange portions of the member |0a or other portion of the welded frame and abutting against the track 2| or other true member interposed therebetween such as a mounting plate |36,
The mounting plate |36 is then securely bolted in its level position by a plurality of bolts |31. The tracks 2| are secured to the mounting member |36.
An arrangement is also provided for supporting each of the form rolls |1 so that they may be quickly and easily removed and replaced. This is accomplished by constructing each of the form rolls |1 of cylindrical form adapted to be loosely mounted on a supporting shaft |40. A shoulder bushing |4| is permanently mounted on a portion of the shaft |40 and supports one end of the form roll |1. The other end is supported by a similar bushing |4|. This latter bushing is removably held in position by a set screw |42. Furthermore, this latter bushing and the adjacent end of the form roll |1 is provided with inter-engaging teeth |43 to hold them against relative rotations. The form roll |1 may be easilyV removed by first removing the screws |42 and thenthe bushing |4|, and finally slipping the print roll from its position. An arrangement is also provided whereby the form roll |1 may be easily adjusted for longitudinal and lateral registration as is required when more than one color is printed. The shaft |40 has a reduced end portion |40a at one end, and at the other end a reduced portion |4011. The portion |40a slidably engages in a bushing |44 which is rotatively supported by a ball bearing |45 on the bearing housing |46, which in turn is supported on the bracket 20. The portion |40a has a threaded section |40' which is provided with a nut |41 which engages against one end of the bushing construction |44. A cap screw |48 threadedly engages into the end of the shaft portion 40a and acts against a washer |49 resting against the bushing structure |44. When the cap screw |43 and the nut |41 are loosened the shaft |40 may be shifted and so the lateral registering accomplished.
The shaft portion |401)` is provided witha bushing construction |50 which is associated with a ball bearing |5| supported by a housing |52 which is capable of being mounted on the other supporting bracket 20. The drive gear 68 is loose upon the shaft portion |401) but is connected by a pin |53 with a member |54 adjacent it and also loose on the shaft portion |40b. This member |54 supports a worm |55 which meshes with a. worm wheel |56, slidably mounted on the shaft portion |4013` by a key device |51. A cap screw 68 engages through a washer |69 acting against the member |56. The cap screw |68 threadedly engages into the end ofthe shaft portion |4019. The gear 68 rests against the edge of the bushing |50. The cap screw |68 is therefore capable of being screwed down and assists in holding the shaft portion |401) fixed relative to the gear 68. When required, the screw |68 may be loosened and the worm turned to turn the worm wheel |56 and so the shaft |40 relative to the gear 68. Thus longitudinal registering is accomplished.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that inV practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a printing press, a color unit, comprising a pair of parallel spaced track elements, slides on said' track elements, side brackets slidably mounted on said track elements and including base portions engaging said track elements, an outer top portion, and an inner top portion, a furnishing roll rotatively mounted between said side brackets at points intermediate of said outer and inner top portions, a form roll rotatively mounted between the inner top portions of said side brackets, auxiliary slides slidably mounted on the outer top portions of said side brackets, auxiliary brackets pivotally mounted on said auxiliary slides, an intermediate furnishing roll rotatively and adjustably on said auxiliary brackets and engageable against said form roll and said furnishing roll, means cooperative with said auxiliary brackets for adjusting the pressure between said intermediate furnishing roll and said furnishing roll, eccentric means cooperative between said auxiliary brackets and auxiliary slides for holding said parts fixed and movable from said fixed position, adjustment means cooperative with said side brackets and auxiliary slides for controlling the pressure of said intermediate furnishing roll and said print roll, eccentric means cooperative between said slides and side brackets for holding these parts fixed and movable from said fixed positions, and adjustment means cooperative with said slides for adjusting the form roll relative to said track elements for controlling the pressure between said form roll and a pressure roll. 'In a printing press, a color unit, comprising a pair of spaced side brackets slidably supported, a form roll rotatively mounted between said side brackets, means for holding said side brackets in vvarious fixed positions to engage said form roll against a pressure drum under various pressures, a furnishing roll rotatively mounted between said side brackets, auxiliary slides slidably mounted on said side brackets, an intermediate furnishing roll rotatively mounted and supported on said auxiliary slides and engageable simultaneously with said furnishing roll and with said form roll, means for holding said auxiliary slides in various fixed positions to engagesaid intermediate furnishing roll against one of said rolls under various'pressures, and means for holding said intermediate furnishing roll adjustably on said auxiliary slides to engage said intermediate furnishing roll against the other of said rolls under various pressures.
3. In a printing press, a color unit, comprising a pair of spaced side brackets slidably supported, a form roll rotatively mounted between said side brackets, means for holding said side brackets in various fixed positions to engage said form roll against a pressure drum under various pressures, a furnishing roll rotatively mounted between said side brackets, auxiliary slides slidably mounted on said side brackets, .an intermediate furnishing roll rotatively mounted and supported on said auxiliary slides and engageable simultaneously with said furnishing roll and with said form roll, means for holding said auxiliary slides in various fixed positions to engage said intermediate furnishing roll against one of said rolls under various pressures, and means for holding said intermediate furnishing roll adjustably on said auxiliary slides to engage said intermediate furnishing roll against the other of said rolls under various pressures, said means for holding said side brackets in various fixed positions comprising slides slidably mounted, screws rotatively connected with said slides and threadedly engaging through stationary members, and eccentric means cooperative between said slides and side brackets for holding said parts fixed and movable from said xed positions.
4. In a printing press, a color unit, comprising a pair of spaced side brackets slidably supported, a form roll rotatively mounted between said side brackets, means for holding said side brackets in various fixed positions to engage said form roll against a pressure drum under various pressures, a furnishing roll rotatively mounted between said side brackets, auxiliary slides slidably mounted on said side brackets, an intermediate furnishing roll rotatively mounted and supported on said auxiliary slides and engageable simultaneously with said furnishing roll and with said form roll, means for holding said auxiliary slides in various fixed positions to engage said intermediate furnishing roll against one of said rolls under Various pressures, and means for holding said intermediate furnishing roll adjustably on said auxiliary slides to engage said intermediate furnishing roll against the other of said rolls under Various pressures, said intermediate furnishing roll being supported on said auxiliary slides with brackets, said latter brackets being pivotally mounted on said auxiliary slides, said intermediate furnishing roll being rotatively supported on said latter brackets, and eccentric means cooperative between said latter brackets and said auxiliary slides for holding said parts fixed and pivotal from said fixed positions.
5. In a printing press, a color unit, comprising a pair of spaced side brackets slidably supported, a form roll rotatively mounted between said side brackets, means for holding said side brackets in various fixed positions to engage said form roll against a pressure drum under various pressures, a furnishing roll rotatively mounted between said` side brackets, auxiliary slides slidably mounted on said side brackets, an intermediate furnishing roll rotatively mounted and supported on said auxiliary slides `and engageable simultaneously with said furnishing roll and with said form roll, means for holding said auxiliary slides in various fixed positions to engage said intermediate furnishing roll against one of said rolls under various pressures, .and means for holding said intermediate furnishing roll adjustably on said auxiliary slides to engage said intermediate furnishing,r roll against the other of said rolls under various pressures, said intermediate furnishing roll being supported on said auxiliary slides with brackets, said latter brackets being pivotally mounted on said auxiliary slides, said intermediate furnishing roll being rotatively supported on said latter brackets, and eccentric means cooperative between said latter brackets and said auxiliary slides for holding said parts fixed and pivotal from said fixed positions, said means for holding the auxiliary slides in various fixed positions comprising said screws rotatively connected with said auxiliary slides and threadedly engaging through stationary members.
6. In a printing press, a color unit, comprising a pair of spaced side brackets slidably supported, a form roll rotatively mounted between said side brackets, means for holding said side brackets in various xed positions to engage said form roll against a pressure drum under various pressures, a furnishing roll rotatively mounted between said side brackets, auxiliary slides slidably mounted on said side brackets, an intermediate furnishing roll rotatively mounted and supported on said auxiliary slides and engageable simultaneously with said furnishing roll and with said form roll, means for holding said auxiliary slides in Various fixed positions to engage said intermediate furnishing roll against one of said rolls under various pressures, and means for holding said intermediate furnishing roll adjustably on said auxiliary slides to engage said intermediate furnishing roll against the other of said rolls under various pressures, said intermediate furnishing roll being supported on said auxiliary slides with brackets, said latter brackets being pivotally mounted on said auxiliary slides, said intermediate furnishing roll being rotatively supported on said latter brackets, and eccentric means cooperative between said latter brackets and said auxiliary slides for holding said parts fixed and pivotal from said xed positions, said means for holding said intermediate furnishing roll adjusty ably on said auxiliary slides comprising blocks slidably mounted on said latter brackets, and screws rotatively connected with said blocks and threadedly engaging through stationary members mounted on said latter brackets.

In a printing press, a color unit, comprising a pair of spaced side brackets slidably supported, a form roll rotatively mounted between said side brackets, means for holding said side brackets in various fixed positions to engage said form roll against a pressure drum under various pressures, a furnishing roll rotatively mounted between said side brackets, auxiliary slides slidably mounted on said side brackets, an intermediate furnishing roll rotatively mounted and supported on said auxiliary slides and engageable simultaneously with said furnishing roll and with said form roll, means for holding said auxiliary slides in various xed positions to engage said intermediate furnishing roll against one of said rolls under various pressures, means for holding said intermediate furnishing roll adjustably on said auxiliary slides to engage said intermediate furnishing roll against the other of said rolls under various pressures, brackets pivotally mounted on said side brackets, means for holding said latter brackets in various adjusted positions, and a blade supported on said latter brackets and engageable with a form roll for intaglio printing.
