UNITED STATES PATENT OEErcE.
WALLACE W. GELATT, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PERFORATlNG-STAIVIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 211,627, dated January 28, 1879; application lled November 5, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALLACE W. GELATT, of Washin gton city, District of Columbia, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Stamp Canceling and Imprinting Devices for Marking and Canceling Postage and other Stamps, ot' which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to improve upon the canceling and post-marking stamps now in use 5 and it consists in the construction ofthe device, as will be fully hereinafter described'.
In the drawings, Figure lis a vertical view ofthe device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of under side of device. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view below line x.
A represents the handle, made of any suitable material. B is a metal band, into which handle Ais firmly inserted, having slots therein on each side to admit of the free passage of arm C. C is a reciprocating arm or Walking-beam, pivoted, at or about its center, in handle A, as seen in Fig. l, one end of which passes through a slot in the upper end of the stamping-die rod, an d pivoted therein by pivot-pin p. The other end ot' arm C has within and upon its semicircular hand stud c, working in a spiral groove upon cylindrical rod G.
D is a stationary bar, rigidly attached to handle A, the outer ends of which bar have holes therein to freely admit of the passage up and down of the stamping-die rod and the cylyndrical rod attached to the cutter or canceling-wheel. E is a rod, attached rmly to the stamping-die, which rod reciprocates freely through an orifice in the outer end of bar D, and is fastened to arm C, as hereinbefore described. F is the stamping-die, rigidly attached to rod E at its lower extremity, and has athumb-screw, j', passing into it for the purpose of rmly holding the type, upon which is the date of stamping. G is a cylindrical rod, having a spiral groove therein, which rod, like rod E of the stamping-die, also passes freely through an orifice in the outer end of bar D, and is held in position by pin l) upon cylindrical rod G. H is a rile-faced cutter or canceling-wheel, rigidly attached to the lower end of cylindrical rod G. h is a spiral groove cut in-rod G, and in which stud c of the reciprocating arm C operates, by means of which reciprocation stud c imparts rotary motion to file-faced cutter or canceling-wheel H as it (the stud c) passes up and down in spiral groove h. J is a plate extending from the inner side of rod E to the inner side ot cylindrical rod G, and located upon the top of the stamping-die F and canceling-wheel H. Each end of said plateJ is semicircular in form, so as to nicely ht laround said rods E and G, and is held in position by spiral spring j, encircling a rod iirmly inserted in handle A, as seen in Fig. 1.
K is a rod, around which spiral spring j twines, and is held in position by its upper end'bcing firmly embedded in the lower end of handleA, while its lower end passes through a hole in plate J, and is of sufficient length to remain at all times below plate J, thereby acting as a holding device to the better keeping ot' plate J inits proper place. Lis a hollow square cut in the under side of the stamping-die F, and of sufficient depth to admit of the insertion of the type for imprinting the date of stamping, which type are held firmly in position by thumb-screw f in stamping-die F.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a perforatingstamp, handle A, band B, reciprocating arm C and its pivot-pin p, stud c, working in spiral groove h, stationary ba-r D, rod E, stampingldie F, with its hollow recess L, thumb-screw f, cylindrical rod G, pin I), cutter-wheel H, plate J, rodV K, spiral spring j, substantially in the manner shown, as and for the purpose described.
WALLACE W. GELATT.
