In this latter position of the drum sections 4b, 4b, 40, the links 20 by preference extend at substantially right angles to the direction of movement of the thrust devices l8, sothat (a) in the movement of these devices inwardly (toward the left in Fig. 4) to the position shown in Fig. 5, the section 40 is moved inwardly radially and the sections lb, 411, are swung inwardly, whereby the drum is contracted or collapsed, and (b) in the movement of these devices in the opposite direction, the sections 4b, 4b, 4c, are expanded to the position shown in Fig. 4. Accordingly in my construction, I operate one drum section inwardly and outwardly and through it I operate the other movable sections.
The links 2|) are pivoted to the sections 4b, 4b, 40, by means of rods 20' which extend longitudinally of the drum through openings formed in the walls of the sections, and held against endwise movement by cotter pins 20a, the openings for the rods carried by the section to being preferably at the points of connection of the thrust devices I8 and arms l9.
The means for rotating the shaft 3 comprises a collar 2| rotatably fitting the inner end of the shaft member 3a and drivingly connected to the driving mechanism within the housing 2 and keyed to the member 3a by keys 22, whereby the connected members 3a, 3b, are driven. As shown in Fig. 6, the key-ways 23 formed in one of these parts, preferably the collar 2|, are extended in opposite directions angularly to permit of limited rotation of the collar 2| relative to the shaft member 3a, so that in starting or stopping the collar 2| it rotatesrelative to the member 3a before it acts through the keys 22 to drive or to effect stoppage or reversal of the shaft 3. The purpose of this relative movement is to provide direct operating connections between the shaft driving means and the thrust devices It. whereby the operation of the latter is automatic and independent of the driving connection from the collar 2| to the shaft 3 for rotating the latter, although both operations are effected from a single driven element. 4

The idler 21 is rotatably supported on a shaft carried by thefree end of a bracket 21' bolted to the innermost lug I0 on the shaft member 3b and drum section la (see Figs. 6 and 7).
The collar 2| is mounted in bearings 2 la in the front wall 2a of the housing 2 and is preferably formed integral with a gear 2| which is connected to and driven by the driving mechanism (not shown) within the housing 2. The gear 2| is arranged between the housing wall 2a and a shoulder 31: on the shaft 3 to prevent endwise movement of the collar.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that when the driving mechanism is started, the collar 2| will first or initially rotate relative to the shaft 3 an angular distance determined by the width of the key-ways 23 and thereafter through the keys 22, it will become drivingly connected to the shaft 3 to rotate the drum and effect coiling of the material thereon. During this initial movement of the collar, it will cause a rotation of the shafts and through the gears 25 thereon and racks 24 on the thrust devices, the drum sections will be expanded. At the end of the coiling operation, the rotation of the collar is stopped, permitting the momentum of the shaft 3 and drum to rotate relative to the collar 2|, whereby the moving means for the thrust devices'will effect a collapsing of the movable drum sections. However, if these sections do not become collapsed, the collar 2| may be rotated in the opposite direction far enough to move the movable drum sections to their col lapsed position.
The stationary drum section 4a is cut away along one longitudinal edge to provide a recess 28 in which is removably fixed a clamping member 29, the latter forming with a clamping member 29' removably and adjustably secured on the tail portion 4b" of the adjacent drum section lb. a clamping means for the free end of the material A. As the clamping member 29' is disposed beyond the pivot for the drum section 4b, the clamping members will be separated when the said section is in its collapsed position, but movement of said section'to its expanded position will move the clamping member 29 toward the clamping member 29 and thus clamp or grip the material between them. By preference the clamping members are provided with related interlocking elements to insure a positive gripping of the material. By interposing one or shims 30 between the tail portion 4b and the clamping member 29', the clamping means maybe adjusted to receive and clamp materials of different thicknesses.
To those skilled in the art to which my inven- 4 tion relates, many changes in construction and widely diifering embodiments and applications of the invention will suggest themselves without departingfrom the spirit and scope of the invention. My disclosures and the description herein are purely illustrative and are not intended to be in any sense limiting.
What I claim is:
1. In a coiling device for sheet material, a
support, a shaft rotatably mounted on said sunport, a drum comprising a plurality of relatively movable sections carried by said shaft, a driven element, means operated by said element for moving certain of said sections, connections between said element-and said shaft for rotatingthe latter, and means for driving said element. 2. In a coiling device for sheet material, a support, a shaft rotatably mounted on said support, a drum carried by said shaft and comprising a plurality of sections certain of which are movable to permit collapsing of the drum, means for moving the movable sections independently of the shaft, and means arranged to be engaged by an element of said moving means for rotating said shaft. 7

In a coiling device for sheetmaterial, a support, a shaft rotatably mounted on said support, a drum'carried by said shaft and com- 1 prising a plurality of sections certain of which support, a shaft rotatably mounted on said supare movable to permit collapsing of the drum, and means for rotating said shaft, said means including an element which is movable relative to said shaft to drivingly engage therewith and which during such relative movement operates said movable sections independently of said shaft.
4. In a coiling device for sheet material, a support, a shaft rotatably mounted on said support, a drum carried by said shaft and comprising a plurality of sections certain ofwhich are movable to permit collapsing of the drum, a
driven element for driving said shaft, mounted thereon for limited movement relative to said shaft when started and stopped, means operated by said element during said relative movement to operate said movable-sections independently of the shaft, and means for driving said element.
5. In a coiling device for sheet material, a support, a shaft rotatably mounted on said support, a drum carried by saidshaft and comprising relatively -movable sections, one of said sections being movable radially and the sections at the opposite sides of said radially movable section being pivoted adjacentone longitudinal edge thereof, devices at opposite sides of said shaft and connected to said radially movable section for moving it, links between said pivoted sections and said devices for moving said sections, means for rotating saidshaft including driving and driven elements having engaging elements arranged to permit a 'relativelimited movement between them in starting and stopping said shaft, and operating connections between said driving element and said devices for moving the latter independently of said shaft.
6. In a coiling device for sheet material, a
port, a drum carried by said shaft and comprisinga plurality of sections certain of which are movable to permit collapsing of the drum, a pair of thrust "devices slidably mounted on opposite sides of saidshaft for movement at right angles thereto and connected to one of said movable sections for' moving it radially, operating connections between said radially movable section and the remaining movable sections, said operating connections serving to support the last mentioned movable sections when said sections are in expanded position, means for rotating said shaft including driving and driven elements having engaging elements arranged to permitrelative limited movement between them in starting and stopping said shaft, and operating connec-' tions between said driving element and said 1y of said shaft.

In a coiling device for sheet material, a support, a shaft rotatably mounted on said support, a drum carried by said shaft and comprising a plurality of sections, one of said sections being jradially thereof and each of the remaining sections being pivotallymounted along one edge on said shaft, operating connections between each said pivoted section and said radially movable section, a separate shaft mounted in and extending longitudinally of said drum parallel to said first mentioned shaft, operatingmeans between said separate shaft and said radially movable section for moving it, and means adjacent one end of said drum for rotating said separate shaft,
said rotating means being arranged to drive said first mentioned shaft after a movement of said separate shaft.
9. In a coiling device for sheet material, a sup'- port, a shaft rotatably mounted on said support,
a drum carried by said shaft and comprising a plurality of sections, one of said sections being -stationarily fixed to said shaft, the diametrical section being mounted on said shaft to movev radially' thereof and each of the remaining sections being pivotally mounted-along one edge on said shaft, operating connections between each said pivoted section and said radially movable section, a separate shaft mounted in and extending longitudinally of said drum parallel to. said first mentioned shaft, operating means between 'said separate shaft and said radially movable section for moving it, and means adjacent one end of said drum for rotating said separate shaft, said rotating means consisting of a collar geared to said separate shaft for rotating it independpredetermined I rently of said shaft and arranged after a predetermined movement thereof to engage and rotate said first mentioned shaft.

In a coiling device for sheet material, a support,-'a shaft rotatably mounted on said support. a drum carried by said shaft and comprising a plurality of sections certain of which are movable to permit collapsing of the drum, and meansfor operating said. movable sections and driving said shaft, one element of said means being common to said sections and shaft and mounted to permit its limited movement relative to the latter.
11. In a coiling device for sheet material, a
, support, a shaft rotatably mounted on said support, a drum carried by said shaftand cpinprising a plurality of sections certain of which are movable to permit collapsing of the drum, a driven collar rotatably fitting said shaft and arranged to be drivingly connected thereto to rotate it when rotated on said shaft a predetermined distance, and, operating connections between said collar and said movable sections arranged to move the latter during movement of said collar on said shaft.

In a coiling device for sheet material, a support, a shaft rotatably mounted on said support, a drum comprising a plurality of sections one of which is fixed to said shaft, the remaining sections being relatively movable, means for moving said movable sections, and a driven element for rotating said shaft, said element being movable relative to said shaft in starting the rotation thereof and drivingly connected to said moving means and arranged to operate said means prior to the rotation of said shaft.
13. In a coiling device for sheet material, a support, a shaft rotatable thereon, a drum carried by said shaft and comprising a plurality of sections, one thereof being fixed to said shaft, an-
other section being disposed opposite said fixed section and movable radially to and from said shaft and a section at either side of said shaft and pivoted thereto adjacent said fixed section, a pair of elements slidably mounted on opposite sides of said shaft and connected at their outer ends to and supporting said movable section on said shaft for movement radially thereof, said elements being provided with racks, shafts supported on and parallel to said first mentioned shaft within said drum sections and each provided with a pinion in engagement with one of said racks for moving the adjacent element, and connections between said first mentioned shaft and said last mentioned shafts for rotating the latter, and linkage between said elements and said pivoted drum sections for moving the latter simultaneously with said radially movable section.
