MEANS FOR PRODUCING GANGS OF MINIATURE DEAD EYES Filed Feb. 1, 1957 INVENTOR y u mm- ATTORNEY Patented May 3, 1938 PATENT OFFICE.
MEANS FOR PRODUCING GANGS OF MINIA- TURE DEAD EYES William Kramer, Richmond Hill, N. Y.
Application February 1, 1937, Serial No. 123,332
1 Claim.
production of miniature dead eyes for use in the rigging of model or toy sailing vessels and the like, and my improvement is directed particularly to moulding apparatus whereby these articles may be produced in gangs from a single pouring of molten metal, thus greatly economizing in the cost of manufacture.
These dead eyes, for model use, are so small that to make them by any ordinary meanswould be prohibitive in expense, particularly as in the toy and model ship industry the entire equipment for making and assembling a sailing ship is sold mainly to boys at a moderate price.
Therefore it has been necessary in the conduct of my business to devise means for the production of these tiny dead eyes as economically as possible, resulting in the present invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly broken away, of a mould for making dead eyes.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged, partial sectional detail of the mould, with the side members removed.
Fig. 4 is a similar View, but with the central wall member raised from the base to remove the moulded product from the hole forming pins.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5--5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view, enlarged, of a moulded dead eye.
In Figures 1 to 5 I have illustrated a mould especially adapted for the production of miniature dead eyes in gangs, and in these figures let I indicate a mould base, 2 a central wall, and 3,
4, respectively, the opposite side walls. The wall 2 is secured to the base as by bolts 5.
In these figures the dotted lines 6 are intended to indicate the channels through which molten metal is poured for the purpose of creating the moulded product in the form of the miniature dead eyes 'I with the attached gate material 8, the gate, as noted, carrying a number of dead eyes, which number may be nine, as shown, or other suitable number. The mould being double, i. e.
5 having a wall at each side of the central wall, a double pouring may be performed to produce,

in one moulding operation, two separate gates each carrying nine dead eyes. The dead eyes are easily detachable from the gate, as is obvious.
The central wall and side walls are die cut tb produce the curved tops and bottoms 9 of the 5 dead eyes, and the central and side walls are also each die cut to produce the groove ID in said dead eyes. The base I carries the upstanding pins I I which are so arranged that in the moulding operation they will form reeving holes I2 10 through each dead eye. Groups of three pins as part of the moulding apparatus for each dead 7 eye, are provided, because conventionally dead eyes are formed with three holes therein.
To remove the moulded product the first step 15 is to take away the side walls 3, 4, these side walls having been held to the central wall during the pouring by usualclamping means. Fig. 3 shows the mould with the side walls removed. Then, as in Fig. 4, the central wall is separated from the base to separate the product from pins I I, whereafter the gates, carrying the gangs of dead eyes can be removed from the central wall. In Fig. 6 a much enlarged view shows a completed dead eye.
Variations within the spirit and scope of my invention are equally comprehended by the foregoing disclosure.
I claim:
A mould for producing miniature dead eyes 0 comprising a base, a vertically slidable central wall member mounted thereon, removable mould members at opposite sides of said wall member, and a plurality of pins projected upwardlyfrom said base to form reeving' holes in the dead eyes, 35 said base and members fitting togetherand being die out to provide pouring channels and contours of dead eyes in two separate gangs thereof, said mould members being removable from the base and central wall member toexpose a por- 40 tion of the cast gangs, the vertical movement of said slidable central Wall member separating the gangs from the base and lifting the same off the reeving pins whereby said dead eyes are exposed for removal from said central wall member. V
I WILLIAM KRAMER.
