UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARGARETL'BRISBANE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN DISHES FOR REFRIGERATING AND PRESERVING FOOD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,552, dated January 21, 1879,- application filed June 22, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARGARET L. BRIS- BANE, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Dishes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The figure of the drawings is a representation of a vertical central section of my dish.
My invention relates to means for preserving from insects and for refrigerating meats and other food; and it consists in the novel construction of a preserving-dish, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
A of the drawings represents the base or bottom portion of my dish, which is preferabl y circular in shape, and bears a close resemblance to the ordinary circular pie-plate.
The letter B represents a circular vertical flange or ring, soldered or otherwise secured rigidly to the bottom of base-plate A. The parts A and B may be cast in one piece in case castings be used in the construction of my dish. Care must be taken that the'flange or ring B be made water-tight, except at its top.
The letter 0 represents a loose cover for the compartment formed inside the ring B, which, when on duty, lies or rests upon the top of said ring, fitting closely thereon.
The letter D illustrates my dish-cover. It consists of an oblong cylinder closed at one end, and its open end adapted to fit in the recess formed between the inside of the upright portion of plate A and the outside of ring B, and thereby inclosing the cover 0 and said ring B.
In using my dish I preferably place the food to be preserved inside the ring B and under the small cover U. I next fill the recess outside the ring (which I have marked G on the drawings) with water, and, finally, I place the cover D over the whole, its open end resting in the water in recess G. I may also, if desirable, place ice within the ring B, and arrange the food for refrigeratingupon the cover 0 and inside the cover D.
It is obvious that the particular shape of my dish is not essential to its usefulness. It may be quadrangular or triangular in form without especially impairing its value. It is further obvious that no especial material is required for the construction of my dish, as any metal which will not injure the food may be profitably used; also, earthenware.
The dish herein described serves two desirable purposes: First, it can be used as a refrigerator, and, second, as a safe, to keep roaches, mice, flies, and other insects and animals from the contents of the cover D.
It will be observed that the top of cover D is made concave, as shown at Y, thereby forming a supplemental dish, in which I place ice when I desire to furnish additional cold to the contents of the dish. The dishY may also be used for cooling and preserving articles of food in an obvious manner.
I am aware that an. annular chamber in dishes of this character is not, broadly, new.
I am also aware of the device patented to G. W. Smith July 5,- 1859, No. 24,636, as a butter-cooler, and such constructions are not sought to be covered in this application.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The dish herein described, consisting of the base A, having annular ring B, the cover 0 thereon, and the external cover D, with concave portion Y, adapted to inclose the chamber formed by the parts A B G, as and for the purpose herein specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
MARGARET LAWVRENCE BRISBANE. Witnesses:
SAML. CAMPBELL, HOWARD CAMPBELL.
