Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. TUBBS, OF PHCENIX, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COFFINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,534, dated J unuary 21, 1879; application filed May 6, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. Tons, of Phoenix, in the county of Oswego, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Goffins, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates especially to the class of coflins or burialcases having rounded corners and a molding or extra enlargement around their bases; and it consists in a novel construction of the corners of such coffins, whereby the same are provided with the moldin g or external embellishment at their base in a simple and substantial manner, without the necessity of bending around the same the extra strips-or bands constituting the said embellishment at the base of the side and end sections of the coflins, all constructed and combined substantially as hereinafter fully described.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of a burial-case constructed on my improved plan; showing a section of the corner-piece detached and Fig. 2, an inverted plan view of same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. I
A are the side sections, and B the end sections, of the burial-case or coffin, having formed on their respective ends a tenon, t, extending the width thereof. 0 represents the rounded corner-pieces, grooved on their edges to receive the tenons t of the side and end sections,
and thus become attached to same. a represents the usual molding or extra embellished band around the exterior at the base of the cofiin or casket, and heretofore applied to the rounded corners by bending the said piece around them. This construction, however, has proved difficult and expensive, owing to the bend of the ends of the coffin. To obviate this difficulty I terminate the said strips or bands atthe ends of the respective side and end sections, and divide the corner-piece O horizontally at or near the top of the molding c, and form the lower section of said corner-piece with its requisite external molding or embellishment in one piece. This section is provided with grooves on its edges, and attached to the side and end sections of the coffin in the same manner as the upper section of the corner-piece. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a coffin or burial-case having rounded corners, an d provided with a molding or band, 0, at its base, the corner-piece 0, divided horizontally, and having its lower section with the thereto-pertaining molding or embellishment 0 formed in one piece, substantially as described and shown, for the purpose specified.
CHARLES W. TUBBS.
