The principal object of the present invention is to provide an ornament which can be conveniently molded from a material of the synthetic resin class and which can be readily and inexpensively attached to the cover or other portion of a box formed from sheet material.

In the accompanying drawing I have shown two embodiments of the invention but it will be understood that the drawing is intended for illustrative purposes only and is not to be construed as confining or limiting the scope of the invention, the claims forming a part of this specification being relied upon for that purpose.

Fig. 1 is a plan view of a box cover having attached thereto an ornament embodying the present invention.

Fig. 2 is a side view of the parts shown in Fig. 1, a portion of the cover itself being shown in central section.

Fig. 3 is a rear view of the ornament.

Figs. 4 and 5 are rear and side views respectively of the washer for holding the ornament in place.

Fig. 6 is a front view of a sheet metal box cover adapted to receive an ornament embodying the invention; and

Fig. '7 is a side view of the box cover shown in Fig. 6 with an ornament in place thereon, a portion of the cover being shown in central section.

Referring to the drawing, particularly Figs. 1 to 5 thereof, 1 represents a box cover formed from a suitable sheet material such as paper or cardboard. The cover I is provided with a suitable hole such as 2 therein, the hole being shown as centrally located in the top of the cover. The shape of the hole may be varied but I prefer to make it non-circular, as for instance square.

There is provided an ornamental member such as 3 adapted to be placed on the cover I at the hole 2 therein. The shape of the ornament may be widely varied and the particular ornament design forms no part of the present invention. The ornament 3 is preferably molded from a material of the synthetic resin class.

The ornament 3 not only has the main body portion which engages the exterior surface of the cover I but it also has a rearward or inward projecting integral shank thereon which extends through and approximately fits the hole 2 in the cover. When the hole 2 is square the shank 4 is also square, and the shank when entered in the hole prevents relative rotation of the ornament.

For retaining the ornament 3 in place I provide a metallic element having a hole therein for receiving and approximately fitting the shank 4. This element may be an integral part of the cover as will be presently explained, but as shown in Figs. 1 to 5 the metallic element is a washer 5 which is positioned against the interior or bottom surface of the top wall of the cover I. The washer 5 has a hole 6 therein for receiving the shank 4, and the said hole in the washer and the said shank of the ornament are so related to each other as to shape that there is engagement only at separated points. As illustrated, this engagement at separated points is obtained by providing integral teeth 1, "I located at the edges of the said hole. The said hole in the washer and the said shank of the ornament are further so related to each other as to size that initially the said hole is slightly smaller than the said shank at the said points of engagement. In fact, the hole 6 in the washer is sufiiciently small to require the use of considerable force in pushing the washer into place as shown in Fig. 2. With the washer so in place the teeth I, l engage the side surfaces of the shank 4 and lock the ornament in place. In the now preferred constructions the teeth 1, 1 frictionally engage and bite into the shank when the member 3 and element 5 are in assembled relationship. Preferably the rear or inner portions of the sides of the shank 4 are slightly tapered to facilitate engagement with the washer 5.

In the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the box cover 8 is formed of sheet metal having a hole 9 therein corresponding in size and function to the hole 6 in the washer 5. The cover 8 is provided at the edges of the hole 9 with teeth It, Ill. The ornament 3 shown in Fig. 7 is or may be the same in design and construction as the ornament 3 shown in Figs. 1 to 3. The shank 4 enters the hole 9 in the cover and is gripped by the teeth H] to thus retain the ornament 3 in place.

For assembling the ornament with the box use is made of a suitable tool (not shown) having a hole shaped to receive and approximately fit the shank 4 on the ornament. With the ornament engaged with a suitable anvil, the said tool is used to press the metallic holding element into proper position with respect to the shank. The said retaining element may be the washer 5 as shown in Figs. 2, 4 and 5 or it may be the box cover itself as shown in Figs. 6 and '7.

What I claim is:

1. The combination of a member molded from a material of the synthetic resin class and comprising a body portion and an integral shank projecting rearward from the body portion, and

a washer-like element having a hole therein of a shape different from the cross sectional shape of said shank for receiving the same with the side wall of said hole frictionally engaging the shank only at peripherally spaced locations, the shank engaging portions of said element being flush with the adjacent portions thereof.

2. The combination of a member molded from a material of the synthetic resin class and. comprising a body portion and an integral shank projecting therefrom, and a sheet metal element having a hole therein of a shape different from the cross sectional shape of said shank for receiving the same with the side Wall of the hole fric- 15 tionally engaging the shank only at peripherally spaced locations, the shank engaging portions of said element being flush with the adjacent portions thereof.

3. The combination of an ornament molded from a material of the synthetic resin class and comprising a body portion adapted to engage an exterior surface of a box and also comprising an integral shank adapted to project into the box, and a sheet metal retaining element having a hole therein receiving said shank, the side Wall of said hole including at least one inward projection flush with the adjacent portions of said retaining element and biting into and frictionally engaging the shank.
