The bottom wall 55 of the casing portion 53a is formed with an opening 15 in one corner thereof and with an upwardly extending chute 16 communicating with said opening. The chute 16 extends upwardly and inclines away from the wall 59 and is formed with an extension received within the cut out portion 13 of the wall 68, said extension being shown at 80. It will be noted that a portion of the wall 59 forms a wall of the chute and a portion of the wall 51 also forms a wall of the chute, said chute, however, extending away from said walls 51 and 59 at the upper portion thereof. The upper portion of the chute is provided with a vertical surface 8| flush with one edge of the aligned slots 10, 12, and also with an opening 82 adjacent said slot. Received within the opening 82 is a punch die 83 fitted within said opening by friction. The rear wall 84 of the chute is provided with a screw threaded opening aligned with the opening 82 and receiving a screw plug 86, which may be removed to permit insertion of the tool for removing the die 83.
It will be noted that the ticket 88 may be inserted into the slots 10, 12 and against the surface 8I and the die 83 in position for punching, the inclined surfaces 69 and H serving as a guide in inserting the ticket to punching position.
The casing portions 53a, 54 may be attached together by a plurality of bolts extending through bosses 9| integrally formed with said casing portions.
For the purpose hereinafter appearing, the end wall 64 is formed with an inwardly extending flange 92 forming an opening 93, for the purpose hereinafter appearing. Said wall 64 is furthermore formed at the top and bottom thereof with rearwardly extending perforated ears or lugs and 96. One wall, 16a, of the chute 16 is formed with an extension I00 formed with a through opening I 0| extending through the wall 51 of the casing portion 53. Extending through said opening is a screw I02 having a pin portion I04 extending beyond the chute. Mounted on said pin portion I04 is a lever I05 retained on said in. portion by a nut I 01 screwed to said portion. The lever I05 is provided with an upwardly extending arm I08 having a punch I09 adapted to be received within the die 83 for punching the ticket 88 inserted into the slots 10, 12. Said lever W5 is also provided with a downwardly extending arm IIO to which there is fixed an armature III. A coil tension spring II3 attached at one end to a pin II4 fixed to the casing portion 63 and at the other end thereof to the arm I08 of the lever I 05, serves to rotate the lever in a clockwise direction to remove the punch I 09 from the die 83. Cooperating with the armature III of the punch lever I05 are a pair of electromagnets H6 and H1 fixed to the walls 60 and 65 of the casing portions 53a and 54, respectively.
Upon energizing the electro-magnets in the manner hereinafter appearing, the armature III is actuated toward the cores of the magnets to swing the lever I05 against the tension of spring H3 for punching the ticket.
Fixed to the arm I 08 of the lever I05 is a screw !08a. The bottom end of the surface 8| of portion 80 of. the chute is formed with a groove 8| a receiving a felt strip or washer 8I b. Upon energizing the electro-magnets H6 and H1 for causing swinging movement of the lever I05, the screw I08a will contact the felt pad or washer Bib which acts as a shock absorber to prevent the armature III from striking the cores of the magnets. As shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the armatures are somewhat spaced from the cores when the lever I05 is in ticket punching position.
It will be noted. that the upper edges of the fibre plates I22 and I23 traverse the slots 10 and 12 and are located on opposite sides of the opening in the die 83. The switch I30 thus cannot be closed except when the ticket is inserted into the slot and moved down into punching position. The switch is thus not exposed. for actuation except when the ticket is moved to ticket punching position. The slots 10, 12 are too small for the insertion of a finger and the likelihood of the punch being actuated before the ticket is in proper position is minimized.
Means is provided for closing the circuit through the electro-magnets to energize the same upon inserting the tickets 88 in position for punching. To this end, there is fixed on the opposite walls 61, 68 a transverse pin I20 on which is pivoted a block I2! to the opposite faces of which there are fixed a pair of parallel plates I 22 and I 23 made of fibre or other insulating material.
The casing portion 54 is formed on the inner surface thereof at the corner formed between the walls 62 and 63, with a projection I25 to which there is screwed a pin I26. Pivoted on said pin I26 is a switch lever I21 having parallel ears I28 receiving said pin therethrough. One end of the lever I 21 contacts, as at I29, an edge of the fibre plate I22. Fixed to the opposite end of the lever I21 is a mercury switch I30 of. well known construction. Received on the pin I26 and between the ears I 28 is a torsion spring I3I normally tending to rotate the lever I21 in a clockwise direction, looking at Fig. 9 of the drawing, to rotate the block I 2I in a clockwise direction about the pivot I20.
Received within the opening 93 of the tubular flange 92 is an electric plug fitting I33 provided with a pair of parallel projecting plug blades I34. Attached to the blades I34 are wires I36 and I31 connected to the electro-magnets H6 and H1 and having interposed therein the mercury switch 530. As described hereinafter, the blades I 34 may be attached to a socket I 38 leading to a source of electric power to supply electricity to the magnets H6 and H1.
It will now be understood that upon inserting the ticket 88 within the slots 1" 12, the fibre plates I22 and I23 are engaged by the lower edge of the ticket and the block IZI rotated in a counter-clockwise direction for depressing one end of the lever I21 to rotate the latter likewise in a counter-clockwise direction to close the switch I30. Upon the switch being closed the circuit is completed through the electro-magnets and the armature is attracted by the electromagnets and causes the lever I05 to swing in a counter-clockwise direction against the tension of the spring II3 to punch a notch I40 in the lower edge of the ticket 88.
Upon the ticket being removed, the torsion spring I3I causes a clockwise swinging movement of the lever I21 to lift the fibre plates I22, I23. During this movement of the lever I21 the 7 plane to uncover the opening 15.
switch I30 is swung to open position to break the circuit through the electromagnets whereby the armature III is released and the spring Il3 rotates the lever I05 in a clockwise direction to the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The side wall 51 of the casing portion 53 is formed with a window I42 adjacent the top of the chute 16. The opening 15 at the bottom of the chute is closed by a plate I43 screwed to the bottom wall 55, as by screw I44, whereby the pieces punched from the ticket 88 are collected within the chute and through the window I42 it may be observed when the pieces of tickets within the chute substantially fill the chute, to warn the operator to remove the plate I43 and empty the chute of ticket pieces. The plate I43 may be swung about the screw I44 in a horizontal It will thus be noted that the chute may be emptied without removing the machine from its support.
Means is provided for clamping the casing to any suitable support, for example, the edge of a counter in a cafeteria. To this end, there is attached to the casing 50 the member 52 which comprises a casting having a wall I50 contacting the wall 64 and formed with a tubular portion I5I aligned with the tubular portion 92. Extending from the wall I50 is a rearwardly extending horizontal wall I53 from which there projects upwardly a pair of parallel perforated ears or lugs I54 receiving therebetween the lug 95. At the bottom end thereof the member 52 is provided with a horizontal wall I55 and a pair of parallel perforated ears or lugs I51 receiving therebetween the lug 36. The lugs or ears 95 and 96 are attached to the lugs I54 and I51 by bolts I58 and I59, respectively.
Associated with the member 52 is the movable clamping member 53 which comprises a casting having a rear, vertical wall I50, parallel side walls I6I, a bottom Wall I62 and a top wall I63. Extending upwardly from the wall I63 are a pair of parallel, spaced, aligned, vertical walls I65 formed with shoulders I66. Extending through screw threaded openings I55a in the bottom wall I55 of member 52 are a pair of vertical screws I10, the upper ends of which are received in sockets H1 in the bottom. wall I62 of member 53. Received on the shoulder I66 and contacting the walls I65 and the undersurface of the wall I53, is a tubular member I15 receiving therethrough a duplex wire I16. The member I15 may be of rectangular cross-section and the bottom thereof is formed with a cut out portion I11 through which the duplex cable I15 extends, said cable passing between the spaced walls I65 and extending into the chamber I18 formed by member 53. Attached across the wires I16 in parallel is the electric socket I38 received within the tubular member I5I and receiving the plug blades I34.
The screws I10 may be employed for adjusting the vertical position of the member 53 to raise or lower the same for clamping the machine to the edge of a counter or other support inserted between the walls I53 and I53. A number of machines: 53 may be mounted on the edge of a counter in spaced relation, the wires I16 being tapped at spaced points for supplying electricity to the machines.
It will be noted that the casings 50 may be removed from the clamps by merely withdrawing the bolts I58 and I59 and without disturbing the clamps 52, 53.
The top surface of the wall 68 may be provided with an arrow 10a or other mark, pointing to the middle of the die 83 to indicate the exact point at which the punching will take place. The operator is thus guided in applying the ticket so that the desired number may be punched. The plates I22, I23 may be made of metal or any other suitable material.
It will be understood that a number of machines 50 may be mounted on a single elongated counter and one duplex cable I16 extending through an elongated conduit I15 may serve to supply electric. current to all the machines, the conduit I15 being formed with cut out portions I11 at spaced intervals, to permit the duplex wires to pass out of the conduit for attachment to the sockets 238.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein contained, or shown in the accompanying drawing, is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A ticket punch comprising a casing, a lever pivoted therein and having an armature at one end, an electro-magnet within the casing for attracting said armature, a punch on said lever, a chute within said casing having a die on a wall thereof adapted to receive said punch, spring means for rotating said lever, a tilting switch pivoted within said casing, and means for tilting said switch comprising a member pivoted within said casing and adapted to be rotated about its axis by a ticket placed in punching position adjacent said die.
2. A ticket punch comprising a casing formed with a slot, electric means within said casing for punching a ticket inserted within said slot, and means for actuating said means, including a pivoted member traversing said slot and adapted to be rotated about its axis by the ticket upon inserting the same into said slot, said electric means including a pivoted tilting switch normally open and adapted to be tilted into closing position upon rotating said pivoted member by inserting said ticket into said slot.
3. A ticket punching machine comprising a casing, a punch and die therein, electric means in said casing for actuating said punch, a vertical chute in said casing associated With said die to receive the clippings, a wall of said chute constituting a part of said casing, and window means on said wall of said chute adjacent the upper end of said chute to permit observation of the inside of the chute from the outside of said casing, and a removable closure at the bottom of said chute to permit removal of the accumulated clippings from said chute.
4. In combination, a casing, electric means Within said casing, means for fixing the casing to a support comprising a clamping member fixed to said casing, a conduit adapted to be fixed to said support by said clamp, and electric wires extending through said conduit and connected to said electric means.
5. In combination with an elongated support having an edge, an elongated conduit disposed against said edge, means for clamping said conduit to said support, an electric fitting on said clamping means, said conduit having an opening, electric wires extending through said conduit, and opening, and being attached to said fitting, and an electric ticket punching device comprising a casing fixed to said clamping means and having an electric fitting thereon complementary to said first electric fitting and being adapted to engage the same upon fixing said casing to said clamping means, electric means within said casing for punching a ticket including an electro-magnet, the coil whereof is connected to said second fitting.
6. In combination with an elongated support having an edge, an elongated conduit disposed alongside said edge, a ticket punching device fixed to the edge of said support, and including means to clamp said conduit to said edge of said support, electric wires within said conduit, said ticket punching device including electric means for operating a punch, and said wires passing out of said conduit for supplying electricity to said electric means.
7. A ticket punching device comprising a casing, an electro-magnet within the casing, a member pivoted within said casing and having an armature at one end adapted to be attracted by said electro-magnet, a punch at the upper end of said pivoted member, said casing being formed with a slot adapted to receive a ticket to be punched and having a die registering with said slot, said punch being adapted to move across said slot and into said die, and means for 010s,- ing the circuit of said electro-magnet including a second pivoted member within the casing and traversing said slot, and a tilting switch likewise pivoted within the casing and contacted by one end of said second pivoted member, said second pivoted member being adapted to be rotated upon inserting a ticket to be punched, into said slot, for tilting said switch.
8. A ticket punch comprising a casing, a lever pivoted therein and having an armature at one end, an electro-magnet within the casing for attracting said armature, a punch on said lever, a chute within said casing having a die on a wall thereof adapted to receive said punch, spring means for rotating said lever, a tilting switch pivoted within said casing, and means for tilting said switch comprising a member pivoted within said casing and adapted to be rotated about its axis by a ticket placed in punching position adjacent said die, said pivoted member having portions disposed on opposite sides of the die and adjacent thereto.
9. A ticket punch comprising a casing, an electro-magnet within the casing, a lever pivoted within the casing and having an armature at one end adapted to be attracted by said electro-magnet for rotating said lever, a punch on said lever, a chute within said casing having a die on the wall thereof, said casing being formed with a slot adapted to receive a ticket to be punched, said slot registering with said die, a member pivoted to the casing at one end thereof and having a portion traversing said slot, a tilting switch pivoted within the casing and having an extension engaging the opposite end of said pivoted member, whereby rotation of said pivoted member about its axis, caused by a ticket inserted into the slot, will cause rotation of said tilting switch in one direction, spring means for rotating the tilting switch in the opposite direction and for moving said pivoted member back to normal position when the ticket is removed from said slot, and means for energizing said electromagnet upon tilting said switch for attracting said armature and causing the punch on said lever to punch said ticket.
10. A ticket punch comprising a casing, an electro-magnet within the casing, a lever pivoted within the casing and having an armature at one end adapted to be attracted by said electromagnet for rotating said lever, a punch on said lever, a chute within said casing having a die on the wall thereof, said casing being formed with a slot adapted to receive a ticket to be punched, said slot registering with said die, a member pivoted to the casing at one end thereof and having a portion traversing said slot, a tilting switch pivoted within the casing and having an extension engaging the opposite end of said pivoted member, whereby rotation of said pivoted member about its axis, caused by a ticket inserted into the slot, will cause rotation of said tilting switch in one direction, spring means for rotating the tilting switch in the opposite direction and for mov ing said pivoted member back to normal position when the ticket is removed from said slot, means for energizing said electro-magnet upon tilting said switch for attracting said armature and causing the punch on said lever to punch said ticket, said chute having a screw-threaded opening aligned with said die and a screw block removably screwed into said screw-threaded opening.
11. A ticket punch comprising a casing, an electro-Inagnet within the casing, a lever pivoted Within the casing and having an armature at one end adapted to be attracted by said electromagnet for rotating said lever, a punch on said lever, a chute within said casing having a die on the wall thereof, said casing being formed with a slot adapted to receive a ticket to be punched, said slot registering with said die, a member pivoted to the casing at one end thereof and having a portion traversing said slot, a tilting switch pivoted within the casing and having an extension engaging the opposite end of said pivoted member whereby rotation of said pivoted member about its axis, caused by a ticket inserted into the slot, will cause rotation of said tilting switch in one direction, spring means for rotating the tilting switch in the opposite direction and for moving said pivoted member back to normal position when the ticket is removed from said slot, means for energizing said electro-magnet upon tilting said switch for attracting said armature and causing the punch on said lever to punch said ticket, said chute having a screw-threaded opening aligned with said die, a screw block removably screwed into said screw-threaded opening, and indicating means on said casing to indicate the point at which the punching takes place.
12. A ticket punch comprising a casing, an electro-magnet within the casing, a lever pivoted within the casing and having an armature at one end adapted to be attracted by said electromagnet for rotating said lever, a punch on said lever, a chute within said casing having a die on the wall thereof, said casing being formed with a slot adapted to receive a ticket to be punched, said slot registering with said die, a member pivoted to the casing at one end thereof and having a portion traversing said slot, a tilting switch pivoted within the casing and having an extension engaging the opposite end of said pivoted member, whereby rotation of said pivoted member about its axis, caused by a ticket inserted into the slot, will cause rotation of said tilting switch in one direction, spring means for rotating the tiltscrewed into said screw-threaded opening, indicat-ing means on said casing to indicate the point at which the punching takes place, and shock absorbing means to limit rotary movement of said lever to prevent said armature from striking said 5 electro-magnet.
