To all whom. it may ooncem Be it known that I, EDWARD K. Wrznnn, a citizen of United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Lighting Devices for Talking-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its special object the provision of means whereby a light is caused to glow in the upper portion of a phonograph upon-the raising ofits cover.

A further object is to provide a self-contained apparatus wholly inclo'sed within the cabinet of the phonograph and which is automatic in its operationwhen required.

These objects are attained by the novel construction and combination ofparts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a side'elevational view show,- ing in broken lines a conventional type of phonograph cabinet and indicating the application of the invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 designates the base of a bracket secured by screws 11 to the sides of the cabinet cover, the bracket having an extending ofiset arm 12 in which, pivoted on the screw bolt 13, is the upper end of the support arm 14. A shouldered pin 15 isrigidly engaged in the lower end of the support arm 14 and mounted upon it is a cylindrical contact 16.

A plate 17 secured by screws or like fastening means 18 is fixed to the upper edge, at one side of the gramophone cabinet, the same having an elongated longitudinal slot 19, through which the support arm 14 passes, the slot acting as a guide therefor.

opening 21 in which is adapted to be received 'a correspondingly shaped block 22, extending laterally from a plate 23, containing an arcuate recess 24 in its upper edge,

the same extending through the block 22,

and set in the walls of the recess are a pair by the screws 27 and 28 with the ends of insulated wires 29 and 30.

The wire 29 leads to a pair of batteries 31 arranged in series, from the opposite pole of which is a lead Wire 32, engaging with a lamp socket33, provided with an operating key 34. and containing an electric lamp 35. The socket 33 is also engaged with the other terminal of the wire 30, so that when the contacts 25 and 26 are in circuit the lamp is caused to glow by the electric current from the batteries 31.

In operation, when the cabinet cover is in a closed position, obviously thearm 14 extends downwardly into the casing and the contacts 25 and 26 are out of circuit. When however, the cabinet cover is raised, the cylindrical contact 16 rests in the recess 24, forming a circuit between the contacts 25 and 26, with the batteries and lamp so that if the key 34 is properly positioned thelamp is caused to glow, the record and movable parts ofthe gramophone being readily observed.

If a light is not desired, obviously it may be dispensed with, by turning the key 34 so that the lamp is unafl'ected by the batteries,

From the foregoing it will be seen that a novel and practical device for lighting gramophones has been disclosed, automtic in its operation when the cover is raised, and further that the batteries, lamp and connections, including the blocks 22 and attached plate may be wholly removed from the cabinet at any time without the use of tools.
