Specification of Letters Patent No. 21,123, dated August 10, 1858i.

Be it known that I, lV. H. ELLio'r, of Plattsburg, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bed-Bottom; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in the combination and arrangement of certain devices by which I produce a bed bottom which is entirely supported by conically coiled springs, the upper 'surface in all parts, yielding alike to pressure, and in there being no unyielding framework of any kind above the beams upon which the springs rest, to interfere with its comfort.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

The drawing is an isometical representation of my improved bed-bottom.

a, a, are beams which are intended to rest upon the bed-stead, Z) springs, c slats. The outside slats CZ, and braces CZ, form a frame surrounding the upper surface of the bed bottom; e flexible straps, n, the end of the spring turned up through the slats, e' fastenings of the frame.

The use of the braces d in combination with the other devices is the means of prevent-ing all or any of the slats from making any lateral motion, without attaching them to any unyielding framework, and without interfering with their perpendicular motion. The advantage of this combination is, first, the whole Vof the upper surface may be made equallyl elastic or if desired the outside and center slats may be rendered less elastic and still yield suflciently to pressure to render them comfortable; second, the springs being conical and the large bottom coil fastened to the beams a, each spring will resist considerable lateral force, but by uniting the power of all the springs together by means of the braces, slats and flexible straps, their united power of lateral resistance is quite sufficient for the purpose, thus avoiding the annoyance of any frame work above the bearers upon which the springs rest.

rThe braces CZ need not necessarily extend from one outside slat to the other, there may be two or more braces on each end or the braces may extend only from slat to slat. By allowing the braces el', to rest upon the intermediate slats, the slats to which the braces are bolted or fastened, are rendered less yielding, and by placing two braces at each end of the bed bottom, their inner ends jointed together and fastened to the center slat at the same time resting upon the intermediate slats, the bed would have a strong center slat such as is required for two persons, and would nottip up when a heavy and light person were resting upon it at the same time.

I am aware that beds have been constructed with springs, slats, and flexible straps, therefore I do not claim them or any of them independent of otherl devices, or of the peculiar arrangement set forth, but
