Description

I W. H. H. SPAULDING. F ire Back No, 211,192. Patented m1.- 7,1 1879.
UNITED STATEs PATENT OEEIoE.
WILLIAM H. H. SPAULDING, or PERU, INDIANA.
lM PROVEMENT IN Fl RE-BACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,192, dated J annary 7, 1879 application filed February 11, 1878.
The nature and object of this invention is to Y produce a back wall that can be easily and quickly applied to stoves in use whose back walls have burned out or are otherwise defective, and that may be readily adjusted to fit different sizes of stoves.
The following specification and the drawing 7 making a part thereof will en able others skilled in the art to makeand use it.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a front side view of the back wall, and Fig. 2 is a back View of the same. Fig. 3 shows the bar or section H; and Fig. 4 shows the plate D, with its bar E.
Similar letters indicate like parts in the drawings and specification.
This back wall is made in two sections, A and D, sufficiently wide to fit the smaller class of stoves, and sufficiently long to form the back wall and overlap each other, in a small stove, a distance equal to the distance that they are required to extend to form a back wall for a larger class of stoves. A third section,
H, is employed when it is desired to increase the width of the back wall. Section A has a lateral offset, (shown atB.) This offsetthrows the line of the outer ends of sections A and D back of the line of the inner end of section A sufficiently to allow the introduction of section H between them, as shown in the drawing.
0 represents a deep recess formed in the back side of section A. This recess extends from near the inner end to the offset, and causes a corresponding swell on the front side of the section. Section D is provided at the inner end with the bar E. This bar is attached to the front side of the section, and fits loosely in the recess 0, in which it slides as the back wall is lengthened or contracted, and may be fast- 7 ened at any point by means of the wedge F. This wedge is inserted in the opening G, and passes between the.bar E and bottom of the recess, and causes the bar to impinge against the lugs or flanges d (I.
Section H is made of such length. and width that when united with sections A and D, as shown in the drawing, the back wall so form ed will fit the larger class of stoves, and section H may be shortened, when desired, by breaking pieces off from the serrated end of the section; but I do not claim the serrated form, nor the method of shortening the section.
What I claim is The back wall consisting of the section A, having the extension B, recess 0, flanges d d, and opening G, and section D, having the bar E, the plate H, and the wedge F, as and for the purposes set forth.
VVILLTAM H. H. SPAULDING.
