This invention is a device for holding bags open so that they may be easily filled.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character characterized by simplicity of construction and cheapness of manufacture and which at the same time will prove efficient for expanding the bag and holding the same in expanded position during the filling of the bag.

The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:

Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device.

Figure 3 is a side elevational view thereof.

Referring to the drawing by reference numerals it will be seen that the device comprises a body member in the form of a substantially rectangular plate of metal or other suitable material having a central opening 6 therein and divided transversely into a pair of complemental sections 5-5 hingedly connected together at diametrically opposite sides of the opening as at I.

Secured to the under sides of the sections 5 adjacent the respective opposite ends of the opening 6 are substantially semi-cylindrical elongated jaws 8 formed of metal or other suitable material and provided at one end edge with outstanding attaching flanges 9 through the medium of which, and rivets or other fastening devices l0 said jaws 8 are secured to the top sections 55.

For the device there is also provided a ball or handle II the opposite end portions of which are formed to provide pintles for the respective hinges 1 and at the same time cooperate with the hinge plates in a manner to pivotally connect the handle to the device.

My device is intended for holding a bag, and particularly a bag made of paper or some cheap destructible material in an expanded condition,

and against collapsing, during the filling of saidthe bottom thereof resting on a table top or other suitable support. The jaws 8 of my device are then inserted downwardly into the expanded bag as suggested in Fig. 2 wherein the bag is illustrated by broken lines and indicated by the reference numeral l2. With the device thus inserted in the bag the material to be placed into the bag passes through the opening 6 of the plate formed by the pair of complemental sections 5-5, the weight of the device of the invention being unsupported by the bag due to the fact that the device is held in one hand of the operator in an obvious manner and through the medium of the bail ll.

After the bag has been filled to the desired level the device is withdrawn from the bag by pulling vertically on the device.

If found desirable, and to assist in the withdrawal of the device from the bag the free hand of the operator may be placed through the opening 6 to rest on the contents of the bag while the other hand gripping the bail I I is used for exerting an upward pull on the device.

Thus it will be seen that with a device of this character the bag will be held against collapsing and in an expanded condition during the filling of the bag.

It will be seen therefore that with a device of this character a bag may be held in expanded position during the filling thereof and after the filling of the bag has been accomplished the device readily withdrawn from the bag.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A device for holding a bag expanded during the filling thereof .and comprising a body member in the form of a rectangular plate provided with an elongated opening, and divided transversely into a pair of complemental sections, hinge leaves secured to the under sides of said sections adjacent the meeting edges of said sections, a bail having at its respective opposite ends pintles for said hinge leaves and cooperating with the hinge leaves for hingedly connecting said sections together and for pivotally connecting the bail with said sections at the hinge joints, and jaw members secured at one end to the under sides of said sections and extending at right angles to said sections.

2. A device for holding a bag expanded during the filling thereof and comprising a body member in the form of a rectangular plate provided with an elongated opening, and divided transversely into a pair of complemental sections, hinge leaves secured to the under sides of said sections adjacent the meeting edges of said sections, a bail having at its respective opposite ends pintles for said hinge leaves and'cooperat ing with the hinge leaves for hingedly connecting said sections together and for pivotally connecting the bail with said sections at the hinge joints, jaws secured at one end to the under sides of said sections and extending at right angles to said sections, said jaws being substantially semi-cylindrical in cross section .and having their concave faces confronting.
