CIGARETTE STUB HOLDER Filed Feb. 25, 1937 l Ciqarel/e Fig. .5.
Elm beam Selma Qndenson Patented Mar. 15, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
2 Claims.
This invention relates to devices adapted to receive and hold a partially smoked cigarette and has for its objects to provide a device which will automatically hold the cigarette in upright posi- 5 tion and also extinguish the fire therein; which will ,keep the stub clean so that, if desired, it may be relit and smoked; and which is cheap and simple to make and effective in action.
I attain these and other objects by the devices and arrangements illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an ash-tray equipped with my device; Fig. 21s a cross-section thereof; and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a cigarette stub being held thereby.
Similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts thoughout the several views.
It will'be undestood that my device may be applied to any desired tom of support, usually When no cigarette is being held by my device the axis of the said tubes 4 is each vertically below that of the supporting rods 3 (Fig. 2) and the free space between the tubes 4 is less than the diameter of a cigarette.
when a lighted cigarette stub is pushed down between the tubes 4 it is-thereby pinched to extinguish the fire and it forces the tubes 4 laterally so that the axes thereof are no longer vertically below the axes of the respective rods 3 but are swung laterally outward. In this po-\ sition (Fig. 3) the weight of the tubes 4 apply a gripping action on the cigarette between them and firmly hold it in such upright position.
It is, of course, understood that the invention illustrated and described herein is in the preferred form but that many variations may be made in the details thereof without departing from the spirit of my invention as outlined in the appended claims, for instance, the rods 3 may not extend entirely across the tray but may be in the form of pins extending inward from the ears 2 and thus holding the tubes thereon. The tubes may be made of metal, glass, or any other suitable material.
The words and terms in the description and claims are chosen for convenience but are intended to be as generic in their meaning as the art will permit.
Having, therefore, described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:- a
1. A cigarette stub holdencomprising a pair of complementary supported cars; a pair of parallel rods supported by said ears; and a pair of tubes loosely mounted on said rods, whereby said tubes are adapted to be thrust laterally by a cigarette placed between them and thereby to apply a holding force thereto.
v 2. A cigarette stub holder, comprising a pair of complementary supporting ears; a pair of parallel tubes; and means on said ears and loosely engaging the inside of said tubes, whereby each said tube is loosely supported by both said ears.
SELMA ANDERSON.
