This invention relates to :newand useful improvements in devices for waxing yarns, threads or the like, and while the device may be used in connection with many machines which handle 5 threads of the afore-mentioned character, it is particularly adapted for use in connection with winding machines, which machines wind threads of yarn into suitable packagesfor use in knitting machines.
Waxing devices as they are commonly constructed have one serious disadvantage which is that oftentimes the thread from various causes will pass out of engagement with the wax, will engage various parts of the machine, and thereby pick up grease, or dirt, which renders the thread useless.
'It is an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved waxing device in which even though the thread may become disengaged 9,0 with respect to the body of wax, with which it is supposed to contact, it cannot become entangled with the parts of the device and will, therefore, not become damaged.
It is a further object of the invention so to construct the device that even though the thread being waxed should become displaced from be neath the wax, it will still engage the wax, thus insuring waxing of the thread at all times.
Another disadvantage in all devices of this type with which I am familiar is that the wax body has a tendency to ride the spindle upon which it is mounted, and it is a further object of the invention so to construct the device that the wax body and its supporting means are held against movementrelatively to-the spindle and maintained at all times in proper operative relation.
I am aware that attempts have heretofore been made to prevent damage to the yarn by reason of its becoming disengaged with the waxbody but all such devices with which I am familiar fail for at least one reason, to wit, the thread is intended to pass around one side of the spindle only, and if passed around the other side of the spindle, which almost invariably happens in the case of a so-called' left handed operator, the device is useless for the purpose intended, and it is a further object of the invention so to construct the device that it is equally efiicient regardless of the side of the spindle upon which the thread is passed.
With the above and other objects in view reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a View partly in section and partly in elevation of the device,
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view thereof taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 3, and;
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
A device constructed in accordance with the present invention includes an attaching armj it which is adapted to be attached to a winding machine in any desired manner. I have herein illustrated no particular manner in which the device may be attached since it is capable of use in any type of winding machine and the character of the attachment depends wholly upon the type of machine with which the device is em ployed,
The attaching arm has a right angular extension [2 from which projects an extension 14. At the point "where the extension I 4 projects from the right angular extension l2, there is a bushing or the like l6, and as best illus trated in Figures 2 and 3,a spindle I8 is mounted in this bushing and extends upwardly above the same. As shown in Figure 5, a set screw 20 may be employed to secure the spindle i8 against rotary movement in the bushing l6.
Carried by the attaching arm and preferably, although not necessarily, formed integral therewith there is an annular member 30. This an- 'nular member 30 is so positioned with respect to the bushing l6 and spindle l8 that the spindle l8 extends through the annular member 30 in concentric relation therewith. The annular member 30 is supported from the extension M in spaced relation therewith, as indicated by the reference numeral 32 in Figure 2.
The reference numeral 34 designates a wax supporting platform, and this wax supporting platform has a tubular extension 36 which is adapted to receive the spindle I8. The platform proper is of disk-like structure and is formed with a beveled peripheral edge 38, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
The spindle It forms the means for supporting the wax supporting platform in operative position, and to accomplish this result the spindle i8 is provided with a reduced portion 40. Passing through a hub portion 42 of the wax supporting platform there is a resilient member 44 which engages the reduced portion 40 of the spindle and prevents longitudinal movement of thewax supporting platform relative to the spin- 55 dle at the same time permitting of the removal of the wax supporting platform from said spindle. A ball bearing 46 is mounted in the upper end of the tubular extension 36 of the wax supporting platform and this ball bearing rests upon the up er end 48 of the spindle 18. These several parts are so constructed and proportioned that when the wax supporting platform is in operative position, the base of this bafiiecl peripheral edge will occupy a position substantially flush with the upper edge of the annular member 38 with the top face of the wax supporting platform positioned in a plane slightly above the upper edge of. the annular member 30, as best illustrated in Figures 2 and 3.
The reference numeral 56 designates a wax body and said wax body has a central passageway 52 to receive the tubular extension 36. Carried upon the upper end of the tubular extension 36 there is a pivotal lever 54 which is held in a position either at right angles to the axis of the spindle 18 or in line therewith, as the case may be, by means of a spring pressed latch 56 herein illustrated as a ball. With the parts in the position in which they are shown in Figure 3, the wax body 50 is held against accidental displacement from the tubular extension 36. If, however, it is desired to remove the wax body or to place a new one upon the wax supporting platform, it is only necessary to turn the lever 54 to a position at right angles in which it is shown in Figure 3, as indicated by the arrow in said figure, whereupon the desired result may be accomplished.
In operation, a thread or yarn 60 is adapted to pass beneath the wax body 5!! and along the top face of the wax supporting platform 34, it being guided in this position by a suitable guide 62 which passes through an opening 64 in the extension M and which is held in proper adjusted position by the nuts 66. In operation, the device rotates as the thread passes through, and it will be obvious that if from slack, or other reason, the thread becomes disengaged from its position beneath the wax body 50, it cannot pass beneath the wax supporting platform 36 into engagement with the spindle to pick up grease or dirt therefrom or to be damaged by being wound thereupon, since the annular member 31) and its relative position with the wax supporting platform 34 would preclude any such action. Since the thread, under the above mentioned conditions cannot pass beneath the wax supporting platform, it must pass into engagement with the wax body thus insuring waxing of the thread at all times.
Furthermore, it will be noted by reference to Figure 1 that the foregoing is true where the thread is positioned in the device to the right of the spindle 18 as it is shown in full lines in Figure 1 or where it is passed to the left of the spindle in which position it is illustrated in broken lines in said Figure 1.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the present invention provides a new and improved waxing device in which all possibility of damage to the thread by reason of its accidentally passing out of its true operative position and into engagement with the spindle has been eliminated, and while I have herein illustrated the invention in that form in which it has been successfully practiced in connection with one type of winding machine, it is to be understood that I am not to be limited to the specific construction herein shown and that the. invention may be carried out in other modified forms depending upon the type of machine in connection with which it is to be used.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. A waxing device comprising in combination, an attaching arm, a spindle carried by said arm, a wax supporting platform carried by said spindle, and a ring-like guard member carried by said attaching arm and completely surrounding said wax supporting platform.
2. A waxing device comprising in combination, an attaching arm, a spindle carried by said arm, a wax supporting platform removably carried by said spindle, said Wax supporting platform having a beveled peripheral edge, and a guard completely surrounding the peripheral edge of the wax supporting platform.
3. A waxing device comprising in combination, an attaching arm having an angular portion and a free end at an angle to the angular portion of the attaching arm, a spindle secured in said free end of the attaching arm, a wax supporting platform rotatably mounted on said spindle, means for locking said wax supporting platform on said spindle, means for looking a body of wax upon the wax supporting platform, means for guiding a thread to be waxed between the wax and the wax supporting platform upon either side of the spindle, and means completely surrounding the wax supporting platform for preventing said thread passing beneath the wax supporting platform.
4. A waxing device comprising in combination,
an attaching arm having an angular portion and a free end at an angle to the angular portion of the ataching arm, a spindle secured in said free end of the attaching arm, a Wax supporting platform rotatably mounted on said spindle, means for locking said wax supporting platform on said spindle, means for looking a body of wax upon the wax supporting platform, means for guiding a thread to be waxed between the wax and the wax supporting platform upon either side of the spindle, and means for preventing said thread passing beneath the wax supporting platform, said last mentioned means comprising an annular member completely embracing the peripheral edge of the wax supporting platform.
5. A waxing device comprising in combinai tion, an attaching arm having an angular portion and a free end at an angle to the angular portion of the attaching arm, a spindle secured in said free end of the attaching arm, a wax supporting platform rotatably mounted on said 5' spindle, means for locking said wax supporting platform on said spindle, means for looking a body of wax upon the wax supporting platform, means for guiding a thread to be waxed between the wax and the wax supporting platform upon either side of the spindle, and means for preventing said thread passing beneath the wax supporting platform, said last mentioned means comprising an annular member completely embracing the peripheral edge of the wax supporting platform with the upper face of the wax supporting platform lying in a plane above the top edge of the annular member and the bottom face of the wax supporting platform in a plane below the top edge of the annular member.
6. A waxing device comprising in combination, an attaching arm, a spindle carried by said attaching arm; an annular member carried by said attaching arm, and a wax supporting platform rotatably mounted on said spindle within said annular member, said wax supporting platform having a beveled face defining its marginal edge, said wax supporting platform being positioned within the annular member with the base of the beveled face of its edge flush with the upper edge of the annular member.
7. A waxing device comprising in combination, an attaching arm, an annular member rigidly carried by said attaching arm, a spindle carried by said attaching arm, said spindle projecting through said annular member in concentric relation therewith, a wax supporting platform carried by said spindle and of a diameter to be received wholly within and be surrounded by the annular member, means for supporting the wax supporting platform upon the upper end of said spindle, means carried by the wax supporting platform and coacting with said spindle to restrain the wax supporting platform against movement longitudinally of said spindle, and means for guiding a thread to be waxed to a body of wax carried by the wax supporting platform upon either side of said spindle.
8. A waxing device comprising in combination, an attaching arm, an annular member rigidly carried by said attaching arm, a spindle carried by said attaching arm, said spindle projecting through said annular member in concentric relation therewith, a wax supporting platform carried by said spindle and of a diameter to be received wholly within and completely surrounded by the annular member, means for supporting the wax supporting platform upon the upper end of said spindle, means carried by the wax supporting platform and coacting with said spindle to restrain the wax supporting platform against movement longitudinally of said spindle, means for guiding a thread to be Waxed to.a body of wax carried by the wax supporting platform upon either side of said spindle, and means for securing a body of wax upon said spindle.
9. A waxing device comprising in combination, an attaching arm, an annular member rigidly carried by said attaching arm, a spindle carried by said attaching arm, said spindle projecting through said annular member in concentric relation therewith, a wax supporting platform carried by said spindle and of a diameter to be received wholly Within and completely surrounded by the annular member, means for supporting the wax supporting platform upon the upper end of said spindle, means carried by the wax supporting platform and coacting with said spindle to restrain the wax supporting platform against movement longitudinally of said spindle, means for guiding a thread to be waxed to a body of wax carried by the wax supporting platform upon either side of said spindle, and means for securing a body of wax upon said spindle, said last mentioned means comprising a spring locked lever pivotally mounted upon the wax supporting platform.
