To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. FOSTER, a citizen of the United tucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spindles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful irnprovements in spindles for spinning and twisting cotton, etc., and more particularly to that class ofspindles which have a knee brake, a knee brake post, and a friction finger, to extend over and be engaged by the whirl on the spindle to stop the rotation of the spindle, when the spindle is raised by'the operation of the knee brake.
The object of my invention is to improve upon the construction of the knee brake and the friction finger, as ordinarily made, and particularly to provide a finger, to be engaged by the whirl on the spindle, which will and will be held or locked in its operative position.
My invention consists in certain novel features of construction of my improvements as will be hereinafter fully described.
I have shown in the drawing a spindle of and a knee brake, and a knee brake post, and a friction finger embodying my improvements.
Referring to the drawingz-Figure l is a side view of a spindle, and of the other parts embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the friction finger and the knee brake lever post or guide, and shows the locking spring. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the friction finger shown in Fig. l, looking in the direction of arrow a, same figure. Fig. 4 corresponds to Fig. 2, but shows the opposite position of the friction finger. Fig. 5 corresponds to Fig. 3, but shows the opposite position of the friction finger. Fig. 6 shows a modified construction of the upper side of the friction finger, and, Fig. 7 is a plan view of a part of the knee brake lever, detached, looking in the direction of arrow a, Fig. l.
In the accompanying drawing, l is the supporting case or bolster provided with the ordinaryflange 1 thereon, to rest on the top of the spindle rail, not shown, and having the external screw thread l forrthe binding nut, not shown.
The knee brake lever 3, so-termed, acts as a brake lever for the spindle, and is loosely States, residing at Pawl supported on the upper side of the flange 1 of the supporting case or bolster l, and has a central opening therethrough, see Fig. 7., through which the bolster loosely extends, as is customary. The knee brake lever 3 has the downwardly extending part or engaging end 3', to be engaged by the knee of the operator, and a weighted end 3, which acts to restore the knee brake lever 3 to its normal horizontal position, after the end 3 is released by the operator. There is an elongated opening 3 in the knee brake, see Fig. 7, for the knee brake post, which extends loosely through said opening, and acts to hold the knee brake in position, and prevent rotary movement thereof.
A leather washer 4 loosely encircles the bolster 1, and is supported upon the upper side of the knee brake lever 3, and extends between said knee brake lever and the lower surface of the whirl 5 on the spindle 6, in the usual way as is customary.
In operating the knee brake lever 3, the operator moves inwardly, or towards the bolster 1, the downwardly extending end causing the knee brake to be tilted on the flange l', and the leather washer 4 thereon brought into engagement with the underside of the whirl 5 to act as a brake for said whirl, and to apply friction thereto, and at the same time to raise the whirl 5, to cause the upper surface thereof to engage the friction finger, to be hereinafter described.
All of the above mentioned parts may be of the usual and well known construction.
I will now describe my improvements, which as above stated relate particularly to the knee brake lever, and the friction finger, which finger in its-normal position extends over the whirl and is adapted to be engaged thereby, through the movement of the knee brake, to stop the rotation of the spindle.
The friction finger 7 is preferably made with a sleeve or hub portion 7 which in this instance, at its lower end, fits loosely over the knee brake ost 8, which in this instance is made integrapl with the flange 1, and extends up therefrom upon the opposite side of the spindle from the oil receptacle Il.
The hub 7 is held on the post 8, to have a rotary motion, by a screw 9, which is screwed into a threaded hole in the post 8, and held therein by a nut I0.
