2 Claims.

The purpose of this invention is to provide an improvement in hair curlers of the type upon which the hair is rolled to reduce the weight and also to facilitate placing Bobby pins or the like on the curl.

The invention is a flat strip of material having a substantially continuous longitudinal slot with a flexible member permanently held at one end. and with the other end adapted to be snapped on the opposite end of the curler.

It will be appreciated that many types of curlers have been provided upon which the hair may be rolled and which may either remain in the curl or which may be removed after Bobby pins or the like have been placed on the curl to hold the curl; however, curlers of this type have formerly been made of a tubular shape or round and with the hair wrapped therearound it is dlflicult to slip a hair pin over the hair. The size go and weight of these devices are also objectionable.

The object of the invention is therefore to provide a device for replacing hair curlers of this type which may be made of a. flat piece of material and which will serve the same purpose.

Another object is to provide a hair curler of this type which is of such a light weight that it is not objectionable if permitted to remain in the hair.

30 Another object is to provide a curler of this type which has an elastic member adapted to hold the hair thereon.

And a further object is to provide a curler of this type having an elastic member for holding 35 the hair in which the elastic member extends through the device and is arranged so that it may be clipped on either side so that it may be used by either a right or left handed person.

And a still further object is to provide an im- 40 proved hair curler of this type which is of a simple and economical construction.

With these ends in view the invention embodies a flat piece of relatively thin material having a longitudinal slot extending substantially through 45 the flat piece of material with the sides at the outer end of the slot beveled outward and with an elastic or flexible member secured to the flat piece of material at a point adjacent the closed end of the slot which is provided with a clip on the outer end which is adapted to snap over the open end of the device.

Figure 6 is a view showing an alternate design in which the elastic member is placed through an opening in the device and then the free end placed in a slot in which it is gripped and held.

Figure 7 is a detail showing the method of holding the elastic member in the device shown in Figure 6.

Figure 8 is a similar detail showing the elastic member with a clip on each end so that either end thereof may be snapped over the opposite end of the device.

Figure 9 is a detail showing a clip of the alternate design which is adapted to snap in between the beveled surfaces at the end of the device.

Figure 10 is a side view of the clip shown in Figure 9.

Figure 11 is a view showing an alternate de sign in which a fiat strip, preferably made of metal, is hinged to one end of the device.

In the drawing the device is shown as it may be made wherein numeral I indicates the flat strip of material, numeral 2 the elastic, and numeral 3 the holding clip on the end of the elastic.

The member i is preferably made as shown in 49 Figure 3 of a fiat strip of material about /6 of an inch thick, however the thickness is immaterial and this is provided in about the size shown in Figure 3. The device in this design is provided with a substantially continuous slot 4 which extends from a point 5 adjacent the inner end to a point 6 and the sides thereof are then beveled outward forming surfaces 1 and B which guide the hair into the slot 4. The opposite end of the device is provided with a relatively narrow clamp 50 9 which is preferably rolled as shown in Figure 4 and crimped downward upon the end of the elastic 2 to permanently hold the elastic in place at this end of the device. The clip 3 is arranged on the opposite end of the device and this is preferably formed of a tubular shaped piece of material with notches I and II therein and the central part I 2 is also crimped inward permanently securing the clip on the end of the elastic. Sections l3 and I4 at the ends of the clip are formed with slots I5 on the inner side of the clip and these slots are arranged so that as the clip is snapped over the end of the device the ends of the parts forming the two sides snap into the slots l5 so that the clip is secured on the end of the device as shown by the dotted lines in Figure 4.

The hair is first drawn outward and the ends are placed in the slot 4 as shown in Figure 2 with the elastic open and the device is then rolled forming a roll of hair thereon and when this is tight against the head the clip 3 may be snapped on the end thereof and it will be noted that with the device rolled upon the hair forming a curl it may stop against the head with either side outward so that it is desirable to snap the elastic on either side as it is desired to hold the curl as close to the head as possible. For this reason the elastic may be provided with clips 3 at each end as shown in Figure 8 and this may be placed through a hole IS in the device as shown in Figure 6 so that one end will prevent the elastic passing through the hole as the other is clipped over the opposite end of the device. It will be understood that the elastic of either design may be provided with a clip at each end and the hole i5 may also be used in the device shown in Figure 3 instead of the gripping member 9.

The elastic may also be held by placing the end through the hole I6 shown in Figure 6 and then wedging the end in a slot I1 in the end of the device which in the design shown in Figure 6 is indicated by the numeral I8 and this end of the elastic will then be held in the position shown in Figure '7.

It will also be understood that the clip on the end of the elastic may be made as shown in Figures 9 and 10 in which the clip is indicated by the numeral l9 and this is formed of a triangular shape. with the sides and 2| corresponding with the sides 1 and 8 and these sides are provided with slots 22 and 23 into which the edges 1 and 8 pass. It will be understood however that this clip may be of any other type or design and may be arranged in any manner.

In the design shown in Figures 11 and 12 the elastic is replaced by a flat relatively thin metal strip 24 which is hinged to the device which is indicated by the numeral 25 at the point 26 and the opposite end is provided with a clip 21 that may be snapped into the space between the sur faces I and 8. The member 24 may be provided with an upwardly curved portion as shown at the point 28 in order to insure continuous contact thereof with the surface of the member 25.

It will be understood therefore that this device may be formed with a base member consisting of a fiat piece of material with a slot extending continuously through the central part thereof and any elastic or flexible means may be provided which may be fastened at each end for holding the hair thereon.

It will be understood that other changes may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. One of which changes may be in the exact design or shape of this fiat metal strip, another may be in the use of other means for holding the elastic thereto, and still another may be in the use of other means for removably holding the end of the elastic to the open end of the device in place of the clip 3.

The construction will be readily understood from the foregoing description. In use the device may be provided as shown and described and it will be noted that it may be started upon a por tion of the hair as shown in Figure 2 and then rolled to the position shown in Figure 1 where the flexible member may then be snapped into place so that the device will be held in this position, i

and one of these devices may be placed on each curl or hair pins similar to the pin known as the Bobby pin may then be placed over the curl and it will be noted that with this device made of flat material the pins may readily be placed over the hair, whereas with the hair wrapped tight around a cylinder there is substantially no space be tween the hair and surface of the device to permit the hair pin being inserted in place. 2. A curler as described in claim 1, characterized by an elastic strand mounted in the head thereof, and having an enlarged bead at the opposite end adapted to be inserted and held between the sloping surfaces of the ends of said legs.
