UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,108,024 MEANS FOR CLOSING SEALING Edgar E. Shanor, Sharon, Pa., assignor to The Petroleum Iron Works Company of Ohio, Sharon, Pa., a corporation of Ohio Application May'fi, 1937, Serial No. 1 1L150 5 Claims. (01. 220-46) in which a so called slack take up memberis mounted for angular movement between the spaced apart ends of the conventional U-ring or, channel. My present inventionds a continuation of that inventive thought and provides simple, eflicientand inexpensive means for securing the parts after the slack take up member has been operated to contract the ring. a
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention more readily will be understood 20 from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, wherein Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a container having an opening sealed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is an edge view of the slack take up-member and its accessories in the open position of the sealing ring.
Fig. 4 is an edge view partly in section showing the relation of the parts in the closed position.
In the drawing, the numeral 5 represents a container having an opening terminatingin a circumferential bead 6 which supports asealing gasket .1 for the overlying flange 8 of a slip cover 9; and I represents aspiit ring or chime whose channular walls, when the ring is contracted, serve to apply clamping action in the well-known the cover flange.
According to the invention a closing member is provided between the spaced apart ends of the chime for drawing them towards each other in such way as to eiiect adequate sealing and in such way as to avoid undesirable and hazardous way tothe bottomt the bead and to'the top of overhangs or projections. Such closing device or nailed in strap extensions ll and ii of the U-ring or chime. According to my, present improvements strap extension i4 'is a continuation of the unchannelled portion of the ring doubled upon itself to provide an end loop or journal I 6 and thence continued in lapping relation with itself and with the external wall of the ring an effective distance to provide for the mounting of a screw stud I7 constituting one member of a mated interlock for securing the parts in the closed position. The other-strap extension l cooperates with a metallically secured externally applied leaf l8'having an intermediate looped portion l9 constituting another journal bearing for the slack with and to be engaged by the screw stud l1 and a secured in such relation by a complemental nut 2|.
As in the device of my prior application aforesaid one of the. side cheeks of the slack take up member may be provided with a laterally oiiset eye or loop 22 and it will be manifest'that by inserting a screw-driver or. other implement therein member ll may be rocked on one of its end axes, the effect of which is to lap the respective strap extensions, thereby contracting the chime and putting the respective parts of the in terlock in mated relation.
Having described my-invention, I claim:-
1. The combination of a container having an opening whose defining wall is formed with a gasket seat, a gasket, a' cover having a flange which bears uponthe gasket, and means for sealing and securing the parts in the relation stated, said means comprising a horizontal ,U chime having spaced apart ends with strap extensions, whereof each carries a mate of a mated interlock for securing the chime in the contracted state, a slack take up member mounted for angular movement with relation to the straps to contract the chime and toput the matedlocking provisions in interengagin relation, said mated locking provisions comprising male and female members, and a separable member for securingthem in locking position.
2. The device set forth in claim 1, in which one of the straps is provided with a stud to engage a complemental eye in the other strap when the chime is in its contracted state.
3. The device set forth in claim 1, in which a 'subetantisdly fiat part of the chime is doubled upon self to provide a journal bearing for the slack take up member and to provide an external stiiiening member to insure adequate anchorage of one of the mated locking members.
4. The device set forth in claim 1, in which a strap extension of the chime cooperates with an externally applied stiflening member to provide a v journal bearing forthe slack take up member and one member of a mated interlock.
5. The device set forth in claim 1, in which one of the straps is provided with a screw stud and the other strap is provided with a slot to accommodate the stud when the chime is contracted, and a nut in abutting relation with the slotted strap and engaging the stud to hold the parts in locked position.
