(01. 66-89) The present invention relates to straight knitting machines equipped with a Jacquard petinet attachment and more particularly to the narrowing device for such machines.
To produce full fashioned stockings upon a straight knitting machine equipped with a Jacquard petinet attachment, several narrowing operations are required. Besides the Jacquard patternings adapted to be produced at any place of the fabric by a narrowing comb extending over the whole width of the division and provided with a narrowing point or tickler needle for each of the frame needles in the division, the narrowings at the shank, the calf, the heel and the toe, and the widening atthe heelalso must be effected.
For the purpose of avoiding the disadvantages of the use of a one-part narrowing comb which extends over the whole width of the division and allows one-sided narrowing operations to be carried out in one direction only, it is well known to use a two-part narrowing comb also extending over the whole width of the division. In such a divided narrowing device both narrowing combs move in unison and in the same direction during patterning, but perform separate but simultaneous movements in opposite direction for narrowing and widening purposes. Hereby a substantial loss of time caused by producing narrowings or widenings by narrowing and widening operations efiected in one direction only is prevented.
This two-part or divided narrowing device has the drawback, that in producing split fabric, the
split connection is destroyed or at least strongly i V the invention, however, the narrowing device is subdivided into three parts in such a manner, that a space free of tickler needles or narrowing points may be obtained for producing split connections for instance during knitting of the sole portion.
All three parts of the narrowing device move in unison and in the same direction during patterning, while for narrowing and widening purpresent.

To allow narrowings and widenings to be ef-- fected simultaneously at both sides of the fabric, the two outer parts of the narrowing device are shiftably arranged. The individual parts of the narrowing device are brought into the difierent operating positions by insertion and withdrawal respectively of special intermediate members. Due to the advantageous subdivision of the mar-: 5 rowing device into three parts, split connections are no longer endangered by working tickler needles or narrowing points as now at the placesat which split connections are produced no troubling tickler needles or narrowing points are In the accompanying drawings one construction of a narrowing device according to the invention is shown by way of example.

In suitable bearings I and 2 of a straight knitting machine, not shown in the drawings, a bar two arms 4 and 5 are fixed, carrying the middle portion 6 of a subdivided narrowing comb. Rotatably and shiftably mounted in bearings 'l and while in other bearings l0 and H a third bar I2 is rotatably and shiftablyarranged. Fixed to the bar 9 are two arms, I3 and I4 carrying a lateral portion l5 of the subdivided narrowing comb while two arms l6 and I1, carrying a second lat- 5 eral portion l8 of the subdivided narrowing comb, are fixed to the bar I2. The three narrowing portions 6, I5 and 8 form a narrowing comb extend ing over the whole width of the division. The associated needle bar is shown at IS. The bar 3, carrying the middle portion 6 of the narrowing comb, is permanently drawn against the hearing I by a tension spring 28 connected with its ends to the bearing and to a collar 2| respectively which is mounted between two collars 22, 23 fixed upon the bar 3. An adjustable collar 24 fixed upon the bar 3 limits the lateral movement of the latter.
The bar 9, carrying the lateral portion 5 of the .narrowing comb, is, by means of a spring 25, permanently drawn against a stop 26 of a slide 21, while the bar l2, carrying the lateral portion l8 of the narrowing comb, is in a similar manner drawn against a stop 28 of a slide 29 by means of a spring 30. The slide 21 is shiftably arranged upon a rod 3| guided in a bearing 32. The rod 3| bears against a narrowing slide 33 which forms part of the narrowing tackle and is vertically movable in a fixed guide 34. The vertical movement of the slide 33 is efiected by a stepped cam 35, shiftably mounted upon the cam shaft 36. The stepped cam 35 is shifted by the arm 31 of a double-armed lever 31, 38, mounted upon a bolt 39 joumalled in the frame of. the machine. The arm 31 engages an annular groove 40 in a socket 4| of the stepped cam 35. The other arm 38 of the double-armed'lever 31, 38 is acted upon by a rod 42. The rod 3| is pressed against the slide 33 by a spring 43 one end of which is connected to the slide 21, while the other end is attached to the bearing 32. Mounted in the slide 21 are two intermediate members 44, 45 which may be adjusted in a direction vertically to the longitudinal axis of the rod 3|. The intermediate members 44, 45 are connected to handles 46, 41 and acted upon by springs .48, 49, surrounding the shanks 50, 5| of the'handles 46, 41. The springs 48, 49 are located in recesses 52-, 53, formed in the slide 21, and their ends bear against the bottom of the recesses 52, 53and the" intermediate members 44, 45 respectively. By shifting the slide 21 upon the bar 3| against the action of the spring 43, the intermediate members 44, 45 may ,be brought in front of the rod 3|, so that the position of the slide 21 upon the rod 3|, bearing against the narrowing slide 33, is correspondingly altered. The intermediate members 44, 45 may be withdrawn again by means of the handles 46, 41.
The slide 29 is shiftably arranged upon a rod 54 guided in a bearing 55. The rod 54 bears against a narrowing slide 56 vertically movable in a fixed guide 51. A stepped cam 58 shiftably mounted upon the cam shaft 36 serves to vertically adjust the slide 56. Tlie free end of the arm 59 of a double- armed lever 59, 68, mounted upon a bolt 6| joumalled in the frame of the machine, engages an annular groove 62 in a socket. 63 of the stepped cam 58 shiftably arranged upon the cam shaft 32. The other arm 66 of the doublearmed lever 59, 60 is acted upon by a rod 64. The rod 54 is pressed against the slide 56 by a spring 65, connected with one of-its ends to the slide 29 and with its other end to the bearing 55. The slide 29 also carries two intermediate members 66, 61 which may be vertically adjusted with regard to the longitudinal axis of the rod 54. The intermediate members 66, 61 are connected to handles 68, 69 and are acted upon by all figures in a position turned to about out of its real position. The free end of this brack et 16 carries a pin 83 upon which an intermediate stop member 84 is swingably mounted. The member 84 has a recess 8| in which a spring 88 is located. The latter surrounds a pin 82 and bears against a head or block forming a part thereof for normally pressing the pin 82 against one or the other flattened surfaces 18, 19 of the pin 63.
In the position of the individual parts shown in Fig. 1, the intermediate stop member is swung downwardly The three parts l8, 6 and I5 ofthe narrowing device form a narrowing comb, so that patternings may be made" in awell known manner.
In the slide 21 the intermediate member 45 is brought in front of the rod 3| and in the slide 29 the intermediate member 61 is brought in front of the rod 54, so that the stops 26 and 28 occupy a position in which by the bars 9 and I2 bearing against the stops 26 and 28 respectively, the lateral parts 5 and I8 of the narrowing device are shifted against the middle part 6.
By shifting the rods 42 and 64 in the direction of the arrows or vice versa, the stepped cams 35 and 58 respectively may be adjusted to raise or lower the slides 33 and 56. Due to this movement the rods 3| and 54 respectively, bearing against the slides 33 and 56 respectively and thereby the slides 21 and 29 respectively are laterally shifted. By the bar 9, bearing againstv the stop 26 of the slide 21, the bar 3 extended by the intermediate stop member 84 and the bar |2 bearing against the stop 28 of the slide 29, the
narrowing parts mounted upon these bars are laterally shifted in unison to the right or to the left only for the distance of one or two needles.
In Fig. 2 the position of the individual parts of the narrowing device is shown which, for instance during knitting of the sole portion, is necessary to obtain a split connection free of objections in the space between the narrowing combs. From their initial position shown in Fig. l, the lateral parts l5 and I8 of the narrowing device are removed from the middle part 6 by inserting the second intermediate member 46 in the slide 21 and by withdrawing the intermediate member 61 of the slide '29. A split connection free of objections may now be obtained, as this connection is not endangered by tickler needles or narrowing points positioned in the spaces between the parts of the narrowing device. The intermediate stop member 84 is, during this operation, swung into middle part 6 of the narrowing device is swung upwardly into the inoperative position. The two intermediate members 44, 45 of the slide 21 are withdrawn, so that the stop 26 of this slide is shifted to the left. In the slide 29 both the intermediate members 86, 61 are brought in front of the rod 54, so that the stop 28 of the slide 29 is shifted to the right. Hereby the lateral parts l5 and I8 of the narrowing device are shifted against each other in such a manner, that a space of several needles only remains between them which is necessary for carrying out the narrowing operations. a
The rods 42 and 64 are moved in Figs. 2 and 3 in opposite directions, indicated by arrows in full and dotted lines for widening and narrowing respectively.
What I claim is:
1. A straight knitting machine having a Jacquard petinet attachment, comprising a threepart narrowing comb extending all over the width of the fabric to be knitted on the machine, a rotatably and shiftably arranged bar, a. middle part of said narrowing comb carried by said bar, a spring drawing said bar against a fixed stop, two other bars, one for each lateral part of said narrowing comb, an adjustable stop for each of the bars carrying said lateral parts of the narrowing comb, and a tension spring between each of the last mentioned bars and the said adjustable stops.
2. A straight knitting machine having a Jacquard petinet attachment, comprising a threepart narrowing comb extending all over the width of the'fabric to be knitted on the machine, a rotatably and shiftably arranged bar, a middle part of said narrowing comb carried by said bar, a spring drawing said bar against a. fixed stop, two other bars, one for each lateral part of said narrowing comb, shiitable rods, a slide shiftably arranged upon each of said rods, 9. stop provided at each of said slides, narrowing slides for co-' operation with the corresponding rods, steps at the upper end of each of said narrowing slides, shiftable stepped cams for raising the corresponding narrowing slides, springs drawing said slides against the corresponding narrowing slides, and a pair of intermediate members located in each of said slides and adapted to bemoved in a direction vertically to the longitudinal axis of said rods and to be selectively brought in front of the corresponding rods.
3. A straight knitting machine having a Jacquard petinet attachment, comprising a three- I part narrowing comb extending all over the width of the fabric to be knitted on the machine, a rotatably and shiftably arranged bar, a middle part of said narrowing comb carried by said bar, a spring drawing said bar against a fixed stop, two other bars, one for each lateral part of said narrowing comb, fixed bearings, shiftable rods guided in said bearings, a. slide shiftably arranged upon each of said rods, a stop provided at each of said slides cooperating with the rod associated to the corresponding lateral part of the narrowing comb, narrowing slides, one'for cooperation with each of said rods carrying said slide s, steps at the upper end of each of said narrowing slides, shiftable stepped cams, one for each of said narrowing slides adapted to adjust said narrowing slides in different positions of height, springs, one for each of said slides adapted to draw the latter against the corresponding narrowing slide, a pair of intermediate members in each of said slides adapted to be shifted in a direction vertically to the longitudinal axis of the rods carrying said'slides, a. handle connected to each of said intermediate members guided in the corresponding slide, and springs each surrounding a. pin connecting said handle to the corresponding intermediate member, said springs being located in recesses of the slides and bear against the bottom of the corresponding recess and the handle respectively.
4. A straight knitting machine having a Jacquard petinet attachment, comprising a threepart narrowing comb normally extending over the entire width of the fabric to be knitted on the machine, a rotatably and shiftably arranged bar, the middle part of said narrowing comb being carried by said bar, a fixed stop, a spring drawing said bar against said fixed stop, a bracket fixed to one end of said bar, a bolt having oppositely arranged fiat surfaces mounted in the free end of said bracket, an intermediate stop member swingably supported by said bolt, a pin arranged in a longitudinal recess provided in said intermediate stop member, a spring surrounding said pin for normally retaining the latter against said bolt whereby said pin may alternately engage the fiat surfaces of said bolt, two other bars, one for each lateral part of said narrowing comb, an adjustable stop for each of the bars carrying said lateral parts of the narrowing comb, and a tension spring between each of the last mentioned ,bars and the said adjustable stops.
