6 Claims.

This invention relates to foundation garments comprising corsets and brassieres.

The main object of the invention is to provide a garment which will give maximum comfort to the wearer and in which the brassire is selfadjusting.

In combination garments of the character described, there is a predetermined relation between the measurements of the waistline of the corset and brassire and the bust of the brassiere, and, therefore, such garments are not adaptableto all figures, and while means are usually provided for adjusting the width of the corset, no adequate provision has heretofore been made for automatic adjustment of the brassiere to the figure of the wearer and to compensate for adjustments which may be made in the corset.

In the garment herein shown and described the brassiere is automatically adjustable to provide variations in the predetermined waist and bust measurements for which the garment was designed.

Another object of the invention is to provide means in the brassiere for controlling the diaphragm and properly supporting the breasts of the wearer.

Another object is to provide improved means for attaching the brassiere to the corset.

Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a foundation garment embodying my invention, the lower part of the corset being broken away.

Fig. 2 is .a fragmentary view of the waistline portion of the garment shown in Fig. 1, with the I brassiere turned upwardly at the front to disclose the means for attaching it to the corset.

The embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing comprises a front lace corset provided with a lacing-concealing panel, constructed as described in United States Letters Patent No. 2,013,190 of September 3, 1935, but the present invention may be embodied in a garment having a front or back lace corset or a non-laced corset having elastic panels, or any other suitable construction.

The corset shown consists of side panels I0, I0, front panels II, II, and side back panels I2, I2. The side back panels I2 and the center back (not shown) ,may extend to or above the waistline of the corset. If they extend above the waistline, as shown, they may constitute part of the brassire, but of course the brassire may be made of separate pieces, preferably secured to the corset at the back.

The panels II, II are non-elastic and are connected together by lacings I3. A panel I l of laterally stretchable elastic is stitched longitudinally to one panel II to overlie the lacings I3, and at its free longitudinal edge is provided with fasteners I5 which cooperate with fasteners on the other panel II for retaining the panel I4 in place. A slide member I6 is provided for engaging and disengaging the fasteners.

The brassire of the present embodiment comprises the upper portions ll of the side back panels I2, I2, a back (not shown) and a front section stitched to the part I! of one panel I2 and detachably secured by hooks and eyes I8 to the part II of the other panel I2. Thesides and back of the brassiere are non-elastic. Said front section comprises two side members I9 of non-elastic material, and a center front panel 20 of laterally elastic material. The panel 20 is narrower at its upper end thanv in the lower portion. The side members I9 are shorter than the panel 20 and are stitched at 2| to opposite sides of the lower portion of the panel 20.

Breast pieces

22, 22, suitably shaped, are stitched at 23 to the upper edges of the members I9, I9, and to the upper side margins of the elastic panel 20.

A strip of elastic 24 is folded to V-form and stitched at 25 to the brassiere members I9. A hook 26 on the strip 24 engages an eyelet 21 in the corset body. The strip 2 3, hook 26 and eyelet 21 are concealed by the brassire and they do not interfere with the elasticity of the panel 20. Shoulder straps are indicated at 28.

When the invention is embodied in a combination corset and bras'sire, the front of the brassire is preferably detached from the corset, as shown. The invention may be embodied in corsets and brassires in which the center and side back members are not integral as herein shown.

The panel 20 of the brassire, in combination with its associated parts, exerts diaphragm and bust control and enables the garment to be worn with comfort by a person whose waistline and bust measurements vary from the predetermined measurements from which the garment was designed. The brassiere automatically adjusts itself to adjustments which may be made in the corset by means of the lacings or otherwise. The variation in the width of the panel 20 provides greater elasticity and easier stretchability in the lower portion than in the upper. This has been carefully designed to meet practical requirements resulting in variations in waistline and bust measurements, without sacrifice of the supporting and controlling functions of the brassiere.

Changes may be made in details of construc- 55 tion without departing from the scope of my invention and I do not intend to be limited to the exact form shown and described, except as set forth in the appended claims.

5 I claim:-

1. A foundation garment comprising a corset having front and side portions and a brassire portion separate from each other at the front along the lower edge thereof with the sides of the brassiere portion secured along the vertical front edges of the side portions, means in the front portion of the corset for positively varying and adjusting the width of the corset portion, and means in the brassiere portion for autormatically adjusting the brassiere to the body of the wearer and compensating for variations in the adjusted width of the front corset portion, said means consisting of a horizontally elastic panel extending from the upper edge to the lower edge of the brassire portion and connected at its side margins to non-elastic portions of the brassiere portion, the brassiere portion overlying the adjustable corset portion and having greater elasticity in its lower than in its upper portion.

A garment including a brassire portion comprising a body having side members of nonelastic material, a horizontally elastic center front panel connected to said side members and extending from the top to the bottom of the brassire portion, a V-shaped elastic strap attached at its ends to the opposite non-elastic side members adjacent said elastic panel and completely underlying the panel, and a hook on the strap.

A foundation garment comprising a corset portion and brassiere portion, separate from each other at the front waistline, the front of the brassiere portion consisting of two non-elastic side and breast covering members, an intermediate center front horizontally elastic panel stitched at each side margin to said members, the elastic panel being relatively narrow in the upper part between the breast covering members and approximately double said width in the lower portion and extending from the upper to the lower edge of the brassiere portion, a V-shaped elastic strap attached at its ends to the opposite non-elastic side members adjacent the elastic panel and completely underlying said panel, and

a hook on the strap for engaging a part of the corset front beneath the brassiere portion.

A foundation garmentcomprising a corset portion and a brassiere portion separate from each other at the front waistline, the brassiere portion overlying the upper front of the corset portion, means at the front of the corset portion for varying the width of the corset portion, means in the brassiere portion for automatically adjusting the brassiere portion to the body of the wearer to provide variations in the predetermined waist and bust measurements for which the garment was designed and compensating for variations in the width of the corset portion, said means consisting of a horizontally elastic panel extending from the upper edge of the brassiere portion tothe lower edge, connected at its side margins to non-elastic portions of the brassire portion, a V-shaped elastic strap attached at its ends to the opposite non-elastic side members adjacent the elastic panel and completely underlying said panel, and a hook on the strap for engaging a part of the corset front beneath the brassiere portion.

5. A foundation garment comprising a corset portion and brassire portion separate from each other at the front waistline, the brassire portion overlying the upper front of the corset portion, means at the front of the corset portion for varying the width of the corset portion, means in the brassiere portion for automatically adjusting the brassire portion to the body of the wearer and compensating for variations in the width of the corset portion, said means consisting of a horizontally elastic panel extending from the upper edge of the brassiere portion to the lower edgaconnected at its side margins to nonelastic portions of the brassiere portion, said elastic panel being relatively narrow in the upper portion which lies between the breast covering parts of the brassire body and substantially wider in its lower portion, a V-shaped elastic strap attached at its ends to the opposite nonelastic side members adjacent the elastic panel and completely underlying said panel, and a hook on the strap for engaging a part of the corset front beneath the brassiere portion.

6. A foundation garment comprising a corset portion and a brassiere portion separate from each other at the front waistline, the brassiere portion overlying the upper front of the corset portion, means at the front of the corset portion for varying the width of the corset portion, means in the brassiere portion for automatically adjusting the brassiere portion to the body of the wearer and compensating for variations in the width of the corset portion, said means consisting of a horizontally elastic panel extending from the upper edge of the brassiere portion to the lower edge,,eonnected at its side margins to nonelastic portions of the brassiere portion, said panel having greater elasticity in its lower than inits upper portion, a V-shaped elastic strap attached at its ends to the opposite non-elastic side members adjacent the elastic panel and completely underlying said panel, and. a hook on the strap for engaging a part of the corset front beneath the brassiere portion.
