This invention relates to what is believed to be a new and novel device for squeezing or expressing tooth paste, shaving cream, or similar contents from a rollable type collapsible tube, and the primary purpose of the invention is to provide a structurally different assemblage for accomplishing the desired result in a more practicable satisfactory and expeditious manner.
As implied by the preceding introductory paragraph, I am aware that the art to which the invention relates is characterized by numerous forms of collapsible tube holding and squeezing devices. It follows, therefore, that 'with this knowledge, generally speaking, of the prior art, I have evolved and produced what Ibelieve to be an improved construction, such as is calculated to more satisfactorily accomplish the desired result.
The particular features selected and coordinated to accomplish the foregoing will become more readily apparent from the following description and accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying illustrated drawings wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the views:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a tube holding and compressing device constructed in accordance with the principles. of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, observing the structure seen in Fig. 1 in a direction, from right to left.
Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 are separate detail views of the individual parts or features. 7
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary side view detailing the pawl and ratchet mechanism.
' Referring first to Fig. 3, the relatively stationary major part of the assemblage is shown, and this. particular supporting or fixture unit is denoted by the numeral 1. It'isadapted to be 40 nailed or otherwise attached to a relatively stationary support such as a wall or the like. It comprises a vertically elongated plate 8 having longitudinally bent edge portions defining keeper channels 9 for a slidable carrier plate ID. This plate I!) is provided with an outstanding shelf or extension ll having an aperture l2 to permit passage therethrough of the ordinary screw threaded neck l3 of the conventional paste or collapsible tube I4.
The numeral l5 designates a nozzle which may be provided, if desired, with an end discharge port or opening It. This nozzle is provided with an adapter coupling H which connects the neck [3 with nozzle l5 and serves to 1936, Serial No. 103,752
clamp the neck, 13 in the shelf 11, so that tube and slide l work together.
At the upper end portion of ,the plate I provide outstanding wing-like flanges or extensions I 8 and IS. The flange I 8 is provided with a circular hole 20 to accommodate the adjacent end portion of the winding shaft or drum 2|. This part 2| is split as at 22 to permitone end of the tube to be threaded therethrough for winding on the shaft in an obvious manner for squeez- .ing or compressing the contents of the tube therefrom.
The opposite wing I9 is provided with a series of distinguishable features. Opposed to the opening 20 is a vertically elongated or substantially oval adapter opening 22 which serves to accommodate the reduced spindle or trunnion 23 on the adjacent end of the shaft 2|. The numeral 24 designates a guardflange and 25 a washer, while the numeral 26 indicates a rachet wheel keyed on the trunnion 23 between the features 24 and 25. The ratchet wheel 26 and spaced washer 25 are located outwardly of the apertured portion 20a of the wing or flange l9. Also on this flange is an outstanding keeper element 2! which is struck out to assume the desired position.
There is a similar lug at 28 which constitutes a stop element, and a third lug or out bent extension at 29 which constitutes a. pawl for cooperation with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 26 to prevent retrograde rotation thereof, as indicated, for example, in dotted lines in Fig. 2. a
The lever is denoted by the numeral 30 and is stamped out into the desired shape and provided with an elongated slot 31 surrounding the trunnion or extension 23. a thumb piece 32 for convenient operation. 0n the opposite end is a. bent finger 33 which engages with the teeth 26 to function as a ratcheting pawl in an obvious manner.
The feeding pawl or tooth 33 engages with the teeth of the ratchet wheel, and by depressing the lever, using the thumb piece 32 until it strikes the stop 28, this serves to eject sufficient of the cream from the tube for ordinary use.- At the same time, it rotates the shaft or drum 2| a predetermined. distance, winding the flattened end of the tube thereon, as is evident from Fig. 1. As before indicated, retrograde rotation of the ratchet is prevented by the stationary detent or pawl 29. When it is desired to release the ratchet from this pin 29, it is necessary to lift up on the ratchet wheel as is evident. The lever 30, however, is independently movable 0n the trunnion 23 On one end of the lever is and can be lifted up independently of the ratchet wheel 26 so that the tooth 33 can be disengaged.
If it is desired to hold the tooth in an disengaged position, it'is thrown up into a position to rest on the keeper lug 21, as shown in Fig. 2. In other words, this holds the lever up and the tooth 33 disengaged from the ratchet while putting the flattened or closed end of the collapsible tube into the slot 22. That is to say, with this arrangement, we have a releasable clutch action which comes into play whenever necessary or desired. The slot 20a may be proportioned so that when the tooth 33 rests on the keeper lug 21, it also holds the cog wheel or ratchet wheel up disengaged from the retention finger or lug 29.
The main idea of the invention is the provision of the travelling slide ill in the guideways or tracks 9 with a nozzle attachment connecting the discharge neck therewith, and the winding drum, and pawl and ratchet means for actuating the winding drum.
It has been found desirable, in practice, to provide a closing cap for the discharge nozzle. Thus, as shown in the drawings, numeral I6 designates a suitable split rim packing-equipped cap held in an adapter fixture designed for attachment to a relatively stationary support, a winding drum -mounted for rotation on said fixture, means for actuating said drum, a slide on said fixture, means for detachably connecting the discharge neck of a collapsible tube with said slide, comprising a laterally extending apertured support on said slide, the discharge neck of the collapsible tube being adapted to be extended through said aperture, and a discharge nozzle threaded on the projecting portion of the discharge neck of the tube into pressure contact with the laterally extending support, and a removable cap on the free end of said discharge nozzle.
2. In a device of the class described a supporting plate having spaced outwardly extending flanges at its upper end, one of which is provided with a bearing hole and the other with a vertically elongated opening, a shaft passing through said opening and hole, that end of the shaft passing through the elongated opening having vertical movement in said opening, a ratchet wheel connected to the last-mentioned end of the shaft, a handle having an elongated opening in one end thereof through which the shaft passes whereby the handle has movement relative to the shaft, a. tooth on the handle for engaging the ratchet wheel when the .handle is in a certain position relative to the ratchet wheel, a lug on the flange provided with the elongated opening for engaging a tooth of the ratchet wheel when that end of the shaft having the ratchet wheel thereon is in lowered position in the opening, a second lug on said flange for engagement with a part of the tooth for holding the tooth out of engagement with the ratchet wheel when said tooth is placed
