This invention relates to devices for dispens readily assembled, wherein a cover part is easily detachable for insertion of a new roll of tape as and when required.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood'from, the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the sep 7 arate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the lower portion of a device made according to my invention on an enlarged scale with part of the construction broken away and also diagrammatically illustrating the device in a different position in dotted lines.

Fig. 3 is a View looking in the direction of the arrow 3 of Fig. 1, showing only part of the broken section on the line 2 2 of construction and with part broken away and in section, with the tape shown in a different position.
In the drawing, represents a casing of a tape dispenser, the casing having a cylindrical compartment H which opens through one side of the casing, as indicated at 12. The closed side wall :3 of the casing includes, centrally of the compartment H, an inwardly extending hub portion it formed from a plurality of circumferentially spaced and slightly yielding members IS. The hub portion l4 forms a support for the center sleeve or tube E6 of a roll of tape such, for example, as Scotch tape I1. I
7 Considering Fig. 1 of the drawing, it will appear that the lower portion of the casing has two enlarged sections 18 and I9, these'se'ctions' being joined by a flat surface 20, which forms a support for the device when not in use. The enlarged section It has a fiat lower surface 2! and a rounded corner portion 22. The enlarged section I8 is hollowed out to form a compartment 23 and extending into this compartment is a curved bearing wall 24, the surface 25 of which forms a guide for a cutter device 26. The
device 2is in thelform'of ablock, which'fits between the inner surface of the wall [3 and the inner surface of a cover 21 which closes the compartment H, as well asthe compartment 23 and has a contour common with the contour of i8 and H), as will clearly appear from a consideration of Fig. 1 of the drawing.
' The block 26 has a curved cutter blade 28 secured to the outer curved surface 29 thereof and this blade fits snugly on and operates freely over the surface 25, the edge of the cutter being movable through an opening 30 in the section 18. The block 2% has a transverse opening 3| which is slightly less than circular in crosssectional form to receive and hold a roller 32 which is preferably made of rubber, but can be of any suitable material. The block 26 includes an outwardly projecting nose 33 which is utilized in rotating or actuating the block in moving the cutter 28 into position to sever the tape 11 in the manner'indicated in' dot and dash lines at the right of Fig. 1, this operation being performed by tilting the device forwardly or in the direction of the enlarged section [8.
The block 26 also includes an extension 34 supporting a pin or a post 35, note Fig. 2, the latter forming a support for one end of a coil spring 36, the other end of the spring being supported on a post 31, which extends from the wall j I3 into the compartment 23, which will clearly appear from a consideration of Fig. 2.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that, when the cover 21 is removed, the block 26, with the roller 32 therein and the blade 28 mounted thereon and with the spring 35 attached to the post 35, can be assembled as a unit, the other end of the spring being attached to the post 31 in the operation.
The curved portion 24 of the section l8 has a fiat bottom extension 38 which terminates in an inward or upward extension 39, the latter forming one wall of a discharge slot or opening 41!, through which the tape 11 passes, the other wall of the slot being formed by the portion 4| of the section I8. This portion has an aperture or socket 42 for receiving a split pin 43 on the cover 21, as will clearly appear from a consideration of Fig. 3 of the drawing. The cover 21 has another similar pin 43 operating in. another socket of the section 18,- as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The cover 21 has an inwardly extending circumferential flange portion 44 and gals flange portion is cut out, as seen at 45 in 1g. 0 give clearance for 'assa e I1 to the slot 40. g of the tap? It will be noted from a consideration of Fig. 2 of the drawing that the cover 21 has, in alinement with the bearing l4, an inwardly extending portion 46, which, in conjunction with a similar portion 41 on the casing, serves to aline the sleeve l6 withinthe casing, whereas, the tape itself is free from the walls of the casing and cover. The engagement of the spool of tape with the members is such as to providea frictional discharge or release of the tape while, at the same time, preventing unravelling thereof.
In the use of the device, a roll or tape mounted on the bearing or hub portion. The end portion of the tape is passed through the slot fill which opens into the open sideof the casing, as seen in Fig. 3 and, assuming that the lower assemblage 26 has been mounted in positi'oh, the cover is then frictionally supported, on the casing and the end of the tape I1 is extended to a position beyond the roller 32. Jihe device may now be moved over a package or other surface with the parts in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing, pressure bein applied to the roller in pressing the tape onto and securing it to a package or other surface and this operation continues until the desired length of tape has, been attached. Then the device is tilted from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 to that indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l, in which operation, the nose 33 is pressed inwardly, which operates to extend the cutter 28, thus severing the tape, as at 11, after which the device is moved to the right to seal the 'cut end 'of the tape to the package. 'l'he'reafter, the free end of the tape H is advanced sufficiently to lie over the roller and the device is now ready for a second operation.
It will be understood that the dimensions of the slot 4:; are such as toprovide passage of the tape while, at the same time, when the end of the tape is severed, the adhesive surface will engage the wall of the part, 4| to prevent the tape from accidentally passing back into the compartment ll of the casing. It will be understood that, in the. use of the device, in pressing the tape onto. a surface by the roller 32, the device is tilted slightly in the the projecting nose, part 33, so that the part 38 is raised with respect tothe surface. casing having spaced enlarged sections at the periphery thereof joined by a, flat. wall portion forming a supporting surface for the device when not in use, one of said sections being, hollowand forming a nose section, theother section having a fiat outer supporting surface, a block movably supported in said nose section, said block having a cutter normally contained within the nose section, the block having a protruding nose part normally extending from said nose section, the nose section of the casing having a slot adjacent the block, through which the end portion of a tape is adapted to pass, said nose section, between the slot and block, having a flat surface, and said block having a rounded surface in alignment with the flat surface andv adapted to engage the tape in pressing the same in engagement with a supporting surface.
2. A. tape dispenser comprising a casing open at one side, a cover detachable with and closing the open side of the casing, a hub portion within the casing for support of a spool of tape, the casing having spaced enlarged sections at the periphery thereof joined by a flat wall portion forming a supporting surface for the device when not in use, one of said sections being hollow and formin a nose section, the other section having a, hat outer supporting surface, a block m'ovably supported in said nose section, said block having, a cutter normally contained within the nose section, the block having a protruding nose, part normally extending from said nose sectiori, the nose section of the casing having a slot adjacent the block, through which the end portion of a tape isadaptedtopass; said nose, section, between the slot and block; having a flat surface, said block having a rounded surface in alignment with the fiat surface and adapted to engage, the tape in pressing the same in engagement with. a supporting surface, said nose section and blockhaving engaging curved surfaces for guiding the block in its, movement in said nose section, and the rounded surface of the block comprising a roller supported in the block.

A tape dispenser comprising a casing open at one side, a cover detachable with and closing the open side of the casing, a hub portion within the casing for support of a spool of tape, the casing having spaced enlarged sections at the periphery thereof joined by a flat wall portion forming asupportingsurf ace for the device when not in use; one of said sections being hollow and forming anose section, the other section having a fiat outer supporting surface, a block movably supported i i-said nose section, said block havins a. cutter normally contained within the nose section, the block' having a protruding nose part normally extending from said nose section, the nose section of the casing having a slot adjacent the block, through which the end portion of a tape is adapted to pass, said nose section, between the slot and block; having a flat surface, said block having a rounded surface in alignment with the fiat surface and adapted to engage the tape in pressing the same in engagement with a supporting surface, said nose sec tion and block having engaging curved surfaces for guiding the block mas movement in said nose section, the rounded surface of the block comprisinga roller supported in the block, and tensional means, supported in said nose section and engaging the block to normallysupportthe cutterin retracted position and said nose part in extended position.

In dispensers of the character described, a combination bearing and cutter member comprising a block having a transverse passage opening through one surface and opposed sides thereof, a, roller mounted in said passage, with part of the surface of the roller exposed through the opening in said surface, said block having a curved outer surface eccentric to the axis of' said roller, a cutter blade secured to the member and having a cutter edge portion projecting from one end thereof, and the other end of said member having a projecting nose portion, by means of which the member can be actuated in movement of the cutter into operative position.

In dispensers of the character described, a combination bearing and cutter member comprising a block having a transverse passage opening through one surface and opposed sides thereof, a roller mounted in said passage, with part of the surface of the roller exposed through the opening in said surface, said block having a curved outer surface eccentric to the axis of said roller, a cutter blade secured to the member and having a cutter edge portion projecting from one end thereof, the other end of said member having a, projecting nose portion, by means of which the member can be actuated in movement of the cutter into operative position, one side of said member including an extending portion having spaced angularly disposed surfaces, and said ex tending portion including a post for attachment of a coil spring therewith.

A tape dispenser comprising a casing, open at one side, a cover detachable with and closing the open side of the casing, a hub portion within the casing for support of a spool of tape, the casing having spaced enlarged sections at the periphery thereof joined by a flat wall portion forming a supporting surface for the device when not in use, one of said sections being hollow, a block movably supported in said hollow section, said block having a protruding nose part normally extending from said hollow section and casing, the casing having a slot adjacent the block in the hollow section, through which the end portion of a tape is adapted to pass, said hollow section, between the slot and block, having a fiat surface, said block having a rounded surface in alignment with said flat surface and adapted to engage the tape in pressing the same in engagement with a'supporting surface, and said hollow section having means for guiding said block in its movement in the casing.
