This invention relates to a furnace.
An object of the invention is the construction of a furnace that will more efficiently burn the fuel for producing the maximum amount of heat.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a furnace that is provided with a novel flame spreader as well as peculiarly constructed baffles, whereby the burning of the fuel will be efficiently accomplished, for maximum results.
10 A further object of the invention is the peculiar construction of the smoke conduit, where by a damper is provided for preventing a flash occurring out of the feed door opening, when fresh coal is fed to the furnace.
With the foregoing and other objects in view,
my invention comprises certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and more partic- 20 ularly pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring to the drawing by numerals, l designates the outer shell or jacket and 2 is the inner shell, between which shells or casings a hot air chamber 3 is formed.
35 A grate 4 is within inner shell 2 and comprises spaced bars 5 with a solid center portion 6. The flre box sides 1, above grate 4, diverge, in cross section, from their upper ends to their lower ends.
A hollow flame spreader 8, in the nature of a 40 table, is placed horizontally within the inner shell 2, and the ends of flame spreader 8 open into the hot air chamber 3 (Fig. 2). The sides of the flame spreader 8 terminate short of the sides 1 of the fire box, whereby there are free passages 45 between the flame spreader and the sides of the inner shell (Fig. 3).
The outer shell I is provided with an air-inlet la, and any numberof hot air-outlets lb, as may be desired.
50 The sides of the inner shell 2 are curved inwardly at their upper ends, producing downwardly extending baffles 9, (Fig. 3), which baflies direct the flame more efficiently down upon the fuel that is resting upon the flame spreader 8.
.55 Each baffie 9 extends from the front of the shell 2 to the back of same, as is clearly seen in Figure 2.
A smoke pipe unit is employed in which II] is the vertical extension that can be connected to any suitable outlet, such as a flue or chimney. 6 At the lower end of extension In there are forward and rearward branch pipes H and 12, respectively. Each of these branch pipes opens at its lower end into the combustion chamber, formed by the inner shell 2 (Fig. 2). In the 10 front pipe II is a manually operated damper IS.
A feed door 14 is placed on the front of the outer shell or jacket I, and below door M is a draft door l5. By means of door M the fuel can be placed in the furnace on top of the flame 15 spreader. The furnace can be cleaned of ashes etc., through the door IS.
The purpose of the solid portion 65 of the grate 4 is to retard the burning of coal and to force it to burn on the sides only. The flame spreader 8 forces the heat to the sides of the furnace. The fuel used may be nut coal or slack mixture, and when the fuel is coked it will fall down on the grate and then a fresh charge may be placed in the furnace on the flame spreader or table 8 to coke. The function of the baffies 9 is to force the heat or blaze down on the coal carried by the flame spreader B so as to cause the fuel to coke faster. The object of the damper I3 is to close the front branch pipe I I when fresh coal is being fed to the furnace, whereby the feeding of the fresh fuel will not cause a flash out the front door.
The hollow spreader 8 increases the amount of radiation, and its open ends allow the hot air to pass into the chamber 3.
The portion of the inner shell to which the inner ends of branch pipes H and 12 are connected is in the nature of a dome it, (Fig. 3). The baffies 9 overhang the flame spreader or table 40 suflicient to cause the flame to be brought close enough to the fuel on the flame spreader to efficiently coke the fuel.
When fresh coal is put in the furnace on the grate and the draft is open, it will burn up so vigorously that the flame will go up the sides and around the baffles 9; then, if the draft is closed, the gas in the whole furnace becomes stagnant, to a certain extent. If the gas trapped under baflles 9 is inflammable, it will burn out (see Fig. 3 of the drawing) and let other gases flow in resulting in the heating of baffles 9 and they in turn will transfer the heat to the compartment or air chamber between the inner and outer shells.
While I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention and illustrated same in the accompanying drawing, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates during the extensive manufacture of same and I, therefore, reserve the right to make such alterations or changes as shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is: V
In a furnace, the combination of an inner and outer shell having parallel longitudinally-extending side walls, said shells being spaced apart to form an air chamber therebetween, a grate in the inner shell, a fuel spreader within the inner shell, said spreader being spaced above said grate and from the longitudinal walls of the inner shell, an opening in the inner shell above the spreader through which fuel is placed on the spreader or permitted to fall therefrom to the grate, the iongitudinal side walls of said inner shell having their top portions inwardly curved, longitudinal baille members overlying said spreader and integral with said top portions, said members being spaced apart and forming downward continuations of the curved top portions whereby to direct downwardly towards the fuel on said spreader the hot gases arising between the spreader and side walls, and a flue outlet between the baflle members at the top of the inner shell.
