This invention relates to combs for toilet purposes and casings therefor and more particularly to that type of comb and case which is intended to be carried in a pocket or in a lady's hand bag.

It is an object of the invention to,-provide combs of this kind with a durable protective casing therefor to keep them clean and sanitary and to prevent them from interference with other objects carried in the same pocket or bag.

It is another object of this invention to provide a protective casing for the comb which prevents,

foreign matter entering between the teeth of the comb and which is securely held on the comb against accidental removal therefrom.

It is also an object of the invention to provide Fig. 1 is a side view of a comb and casing embodying the invention, a part of the casing being broken away for the sake of cleamess.

Fig. 3 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale taken on the plane of the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is a side elevation of another comb and casing embodying a modified form of the invention.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawing,' a comb is shown which is adapted to be carried in a pocket or hand bag. This comb is provided with a curvedback portion ill. Teeth ll are formed integral with the back l and are generally of coarse spacing for one half the length of the comb and of finer spacing for the other half. The entire comb is preferably formed of a single piece of molded phenolic compound or the like. The opposite ends I! of-the comb are preferably angularly machined or inclined towards the center of the comb. The front and rear faces of back In and teeth II are substantially parallel to each other, and the teeth H are pointed at their lower ends l3. On both faces of the back Ill above the teeth ii a protruding ledge or bead i4 is formed which extends preferably along the entire length of back In and which may be curved as shown in Fig. 1 mainly for ornamental purposes. For the same purpose, projecting ornaments l may be arranged on these faces which however also'serve a, practical purpose later on to be explained.

This comb is enclosed by a casing having a bottom wall to, parallel side walls I! and inclined end walls 88. The top of the casing is open between side walls i! for its entire length to provide an entrance opening for the comb.

At suitable spaced points on the opposite faces of the back of comb l0, inwardly extending integral projections iQ are provided on the upper edges of walls I l. "The endwalls iii are inclined outwardly and their free upp r ends are formed with flanges or beads 20 which extend inwardly. The material of which the casing is formed is inherently resilient so that when the comb is inserted into the open top of the casing and the beaded portion id engagethe projections l9, said projections i9 and side walls are forced outward 1y permitting the beaded portions tomove inwardly of the casing at which time the projections is snap back and yieldingly hold the comb in position and prevent displacement. At the same time, the beaded portions on the end walls is will yieldingly engage the ends of the comb and help to hold the'comb in place. When a pulling pressure is exerted on the comb the projections 19 will yield and the sides will separate permitting the comb to be extracted from the casing. The curved portions of the beaded portions l4 and the projections i9 permit this yielding movement.

A-modification of the invention is shown in Figs. 4 and 5 in which the ,back portion 20' of the comb has a cylindrical form and from which the integral teeth 2! depend. The ends 22 are angularly inclined towards the center of the comb.

the back 2' of the comb is formed with opposite grooves 29, semicircular in cross section. The side walls of the casing are provided with curved flanges or beaded portions 3| which are adapted to cooperate with the grooves 29 to hold the comb yieldingly in the casing.

When the comb is forced into the open top, the ends of the comb force the end walls 38 outwardly as shown in dotted lines until the grooved portions 33 are reached when the end 36 snap inwardly and the beaded portions 31 interlock with the grooves 33 to hold the comb yieldingiy', in place.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that 'I have invented a simple, durable and sanitary comb and casing that can readily be carried in the pocket or handbag as desired.

. Modifications in details might be resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention. g

I claim:

1. In combination with a comb having a projecting portion, a one-piece casing for the comb.
